Aching water retention - please help

I am sorry for double posting this. I wrote this in another thread, but decided to post a new subject so more people will see it and hopefully someone has been through the same thing and can offer a solution.

I am retaining a lot of water (about 8kg/17lbs, was 14kg/31lbs!! Have lost a lot already, but stuck with the remaining 8kg since more than a month, no change and have the feeling it is getting worse again). My doctor said he had never seen any water retention on a young person like my case. He sent me to a hospital for some tests - he thought I might have some kidney problems. So I recently had some tests done - kidneys, stomach, intestines and liver are perfectly normal. Blood, stool and urine is perfect as well. The doctors don't know what's wrong with me. I tried drinking more than 5 liter of water daily, didn't work. Tried to eat more greens: 500g of celery daily, along with lettuce and other leafy greens, didn't work. Tried to sweat it out through running almost every day, didn't work. In fact, it has even gotten worse. I know it's not fat, because the body parts that hold the water weight hurt and just feel weird. It's like there is a giant "bubble" around my body, if that makes any sense.

I have an appointment to get my hormone levels tested in 2 weeks, maybe that will shed some light on the issue?

I am HCRV for 14 months, lost a lot of weight in the beginning, then all of a sudden (2.5 months ago) I start retaining so much water?

I must add that I have undiagnosed PCO.. My gynecologist is conviced that I may have it, to be sure, like I said I am getting my hormones tested later this month. So maybe it is really a hormone disorder?

I don't really care about my appearance anymore, it is just that it is REALLY uncomfortable and it really hurts!

  • I don't think this site is working for me today. Must be my internet connection or something. When I click edit my message the only option it gives it to post another reply. Weird. And now it doesn't work when I try to delete the original post. Sorry.
  • Martin this question is for you.

I was wondering how much sodium intake you have on a daily basis? Because I have been dealing with sodium issues (been slightly deficient for a while now and I can't seem to get it back to normal range) I don't feel all that awful so I am waiting it out and trying my best to correct it with this diet. However, I don't want to eat celery for some reason so I mainly eat lettuce for some sodium but right now I am eating a lot of romaine only because I don't have any other lettuce at the moment so my sodium intake is anywhere from 100 -140mg a day. I do occassionally right now. Also I eat watermelon frequently which is actually relatively low in sodium. Do you think this sodium intake in problematic?

I don't eat tomatoes or celery so I don't know how else to get my sodium intake up.

    • Tomatoes are not high in sodium, anyways.
I don't eat celery at all.
I don't eat greens everyday either.
I'm not 100% raw (I eat potatoes, winter squash and rice too).
My sodium intake depends on the day, but goes from <100 g/day up to 1000+ g/day (if I consume a lot of sweet potatoes or carrots, which are both high in sodium).
Most days it's between 100-200 mg.
I exercise A LOT (I run ~40 miles a week, plus walking another ~40 miles a week, plus callisthenics 3-4x a week). I have never had any issues related to lack of sodium. My sweat is not salty at all. The body is very efficient conserving sodium, so I do not worry about it.
  • I will try that, thank you!
    • On second thought, I don't think the sodium is the problem. I have been eating lots of celery and melons in the past and have never had any bloating like this. And it's not just my belly either.
  • I know what kind of water retention you're talking about, becausd it happened to me a week ago. I had a BIG belly which was very flabby, and was also achy when I walked or ran.
I think I bought by mistake a spice that had added salt, after being salt free for 2 years. I looked like absolute crap and panicked.
    What did I do?
-Increased the potassium rich foods (bananas!)
-Drank a lot of water (like 3-4 liters/day)
    -Kept on running every morning

It took like 3-5 days until I lost that water weight, and now I look 'normal' again.

Try avoiding the melon and celery (both very rich in sodium) for a week, and eat only fruits rich in potassium.

    I think that should help.
  • My kidneys are fine, so is my blood. No iron deficiency.
  • do you have problems with your adrenals or kidneys? did you take a blood test?

are you deficient in iron ??

  • What is your general diet consisting of and are you taking any pills or medication at all or recently?
