Bee pollen

Hii guyss! What are your opinions on bee pollen?? I have to have some sort of B12, and I heard bee pollen are good, but we also have pills. I'm a bit reluctant to have these though, because they contain milk. And I'm just not a fan of pills. So what do you think? :)

  • First off, just as a reminder, 30B does not support the use of any product derived from animal, including the very tiniest such as a bee:  http://www.30bananasaday.com/notes/Animal_Sanctuary_and_30BaD_No_Ki...

Now for the B12 issue, assuming you have verified your need via blood test, Freya, the best way to get your number quickly back into sync would be shots, preferably with methycobalamin from a company like TrimNutrition.

  • Before thinking of using supplements,  find out from a medical professional whether a deficiency actually exists. Take supplements only on prescription and restrict it to the prescribed amount. Although vitamin B12 overdose is very rare, one must take proper measures in order to prevent the side effects related to it.

Find out the cause of the b12 deficiency.  In rare cases, some people have either a genetic disposition and or damage done to their bodies and may have intrinsic factor issues.  These people may have to take b12 injections for the rest of their lives.

However, in many cases, b12 is an absorption issue and or an issue related to damaged gut flora.  Once the diet is changed to a more healthy diet, and the digestive system healed, so too is the b12 issue resolved.  Many individuals with pernicious anemia, a type of b12 deficiency, actually have Celiac Disease and or gluten sensitivies.  For them, a simple removal of grains from the diet is enough to get b12 under control again.

Will I get enough vitamins eating fruits and greens?

Do I need to take a vitamin supplement?

    What about vitamin b12?

    • I started taking B12 a while back, when I thought that might help with my amenorrhea and my energy levels, because I felt really sluggish. It was already before I started eiting more vegan.

I can't go to a doctor or something, because my parents just really don't believe I need that, and think it's easier to just take some B12 or bee pollen. They don't really think it is much of a problem, and I don't want to be a burden on them, because I feel like I am already asking so much of them.

I don't know.. Taking too much B12 won't cause any trouble, so I like to be save and just have some. My mum bought another entire jar of bee pollen, also for my dad.
      • Plant pollens have enzymes that act independently of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is vital for humans but it's not vital for pollen. Bee pollen won't provide any significant amount of vitamin B12 for you. There are tiny traces of vitamin B12 in bee pollen, but not enough for humans, dogs, or cats.

  • Hey Freya,

I've never heard of any B12 supplement containing milk or any animal products. I think you're safe in that respect.

As for bee pollen... it's generally considered non-vegan. There are plant-based alternatives for everything honey, wax & pollen can provide. I guess it's a bit of a gray area when it comes to vegan lifestyles, but personally I don't like gray areas. We don't need to steal from them, so I prefer to leave the little guys alone =) And everyone wins.

    Cheers
