Hey Guys,

I hope you're all doing well. I wanted to know what do you guys think is the best way to make a difference as a vegan? I've pondered this question for a long time and always am because it's the most important thing for me, to make a difference. I've asked couple of President of non-profits like MFA, Farm Sanctuary, Vegan Outreach, etc and I read a book called "Being Great At Doing Good" by Nick Cooney, a guy from MFA that talks about the subject and from what I've taken from these conversations was that starting a business and giving my money to non-profits, could make a really big impact, a bigger one than possibly going to be a speaker and talk about animal rights. I've always been interested in starting a business, but this made me realize that I could serve the animals while doing it. The speaker routes seem interesting as well and the great Gary Yourofsky in a total inspiration because he made more of a difference than a lot of organizations in my opinion, but I don't know anyone else that has had as close to as much success him, so that's why I think that going and starting a business might be a better way. Besides that, there's nothing that prevents you from speaking animal rights even though you're starting a business. I just want to serve the animals as best as I can because the truth of the matter is that when I die, I want to be remembered as someone who cared for animals and that did his best to save as many of them, that's the most important thing for me. I wanted to get your guys opinion on the subject.

Thanks a lot and have an amazing night,

Claude

-Ralph Nader

An issue close to my heart is closing the SOA (School Of The Americas) because the military is forcing these citizens of Latin America to allow corporations to destroy their land and water for short term profits. Many people realize that indigenous rights are closely linked with environmental sustainability issues.

The elections are over and however you feel about them, one thing is certain: changing the bipartisan U.S. foreign policy towards Latin America and pushing back militarization is a long-term project and it depend on pressure from the grassroots. We need to mobilize and build mass movements that get people in the streets. We need your support to make it happen. As a thank you, we will send you a copy of the map of U.S. Intervention in Latin America and the Caribbean (see below).

The 2012 November Vigil is taking place in 9 days, from November 16-18. It is our chance to set the agenda for justice right from the start (no honeymoon this time around!). Let's remind President Obama and the powers that be that we will not stop, that we are winning, and that they have another opportunity to join the right side of history! (Many groups are still making their travel and lodging plans: get connected!) We will be their in our thousands demanding that the Obama administration close the SOA/WHINSEC and begin new relationships with Latin America. If you have stood vigil at the gates of Fort Benning before, now is the time to mobilize others in your community to join you. If you have never come to the November Vigil before; this is the year! Make history and be part of the largest annual anti-militarization convergence in North America. Come take a stand for justice, peace, dignity and self-determination.

With about $6 billion dollars, the elections were the most expensive elections in history and they diverted attention and money to various candidates and political parties... as a result, we need your financial contribution now to help cover the cost for the stage and sound equipment, for the rental of the Columbus Convention Center for the November convergence, to set up a media office, and more. Click here to make a donation. If you pitch in $15 or more, we will send you a copy of the U.S. Intervention map as a thank you for your donation.

Thank you!!
http://SOAW.org/

The design team of ILC.iNK created an extraordinary bilingual and union-printed map of U.S. interventions in Latin America and the Caribbean. It lists the Republicans and Democrats who were U.S. presidents at the time of the interventions, which makes it a great educational tool and reminder following the re-election on President Barack Obama; to create real change in the bi-partisan U.S. foreign policy towards Latin America, it'll take more than elections but the kind of hard and persistent grassroots organizing that has brought the victories that we are seeing in Latin America.

Click here to receive your copy of the map of U.S. Interventions in Latin America and the Caribbean as a thank you gift for your donation.

Powerful films can break our programmed conditioning, habits and our linear thought patterns to see life with fresh eyes and to get out there and live our dreams.. We can too often get stuck with Blinkers on, so here is your chance to share life through Rainbow coloured glasses.

I'm looking for some inspiration myself for a film that I need to finish, it is part Nature, Tribal, Surfing, Exploration, Consciousness, Dolphins, StarBeing, Earth Changes, Fruitarian, Simplicity, Creativity, Love and Community.. I'm not a big movie buff, or have the time and bandwidth, but inspiration moves mountains so I will find a way to see any film that chimes my heart. I was born in New Guinea and love the Earth, Ocean and People there dearly, it is my Home. Bougainville is a very sacred and powerful Island Culture that has suffered immense pain and atrocity mainly through negligent greedy mining and political genocide.. This doco shows how the people stood up for their Gardens and Forests, their families and culture, the rivers and all life, and they did it in the most Grass Roots fashion you can imagine. An estimated 25% of the entire population was lost to resulting War, around 20 000 humans died defending their sacred gardens and culture.. But they Won the War.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDpvxQe_Jhg

Initially established in Panama in 1946, it was kicked out of that country in 1984 under the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty. Former Panamanian President, Jorge Illueca, stated that the School of the Americas was the “biggest base for destabilization in Latin America.” The SOA, frequently dubbed the “School of Assassins,” has left a trail of blood and suffering in every country where its graduates have returned.

Over its 59 years, the SOA has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics. These graduates have consistently used their skills to wage a war against their own people. Among those targeted by SOA graduates are educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders, and others who work for the rights of the poor. Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, “disappeared,” massacred, and forced into refugee by those trained at the School of Assassins.

My partner Ryan has been given the opportunity to travel to Taiji to act as a Cove Guardian. He has a lull in his work which is allowing him the time to spend protecting the dolphins. Ryan and I traveled together earlier this year to volunteer with Sea Shepherd in the Galapagos. He is a hard worker and never voices complaints. He was as shocked as I when viewing "The Cove" and would like to help in any way he can. The only obstacle standing in Ryan's path is finances. I have almost raised the full amount for my trip to Taiji in only 1 1/2 months, and have finalized my travel arrangements. I am still in need of more funds, but the future is looking bright. Two activists are better than one, and I'd love for Ryan to join us in the fight to save the dolphins of our oceans!

Here are the pictures of the current works of art for sale. We need a serious miracle here! I'm set to leave on Monday. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing one of these pieces, and I will send them out tomorrow!
Here goes:

This original artwork piece is absolutely stunning. This picture does not do it justice. The paint is irridescent, and is an original created by a lovely animal activist and close friend of mine. It was created to portray Neptune, god of the sea protecting the dolphins and shining with love. Notice the dolphins in the bottom left corner and the heart on his cheek. The size is 24" by 36". The price is $1800, and well worth it but we are willing to negotiate.

This next piece is a print (32 of 495) of a lovely area on Vancouver Island called Union Bay. The title is "Union Bay, Circa 1917". It portrays a time in the not-so-distant past. It was created by Bill Maximick, a well known and prestigious local artist. The size is 21" by 30". $300

This is an original artwork piece by a native man named Terrence Young. His goal is to bridge the gap between all peoples and creatures in nature. This is a wonderful framed piece. The title is "Unity Prayers". The size is 18" by 15". The frame is wooden. $150.

The next piece of artwork is a print of a picture taken in Cuba. It's a wonderful picture and is framed and matted. It was created by a local woman and also friend of mine. The size is 18" by 14". $125.

This one is a funky little piece of artwork. It's small, at 4.5" by 4.5" but fabulous! It was created by a local artist and is acrylic on recycled wood. It is tilted "Magic Cloak". $25.

Please let me know if any of you are interested in purchasing any of these art pieces.

Thought I'd take a little time to speak up for people who speak up for animals.

This is a few years old, but a possibly 'innocent' man is still serving jail-time, along with one of his fellow activist buddies (5 of the original 7 have been released). Didn't learn about it until today though, when I was catching up a bit with the music of a band I like but hadn't been following much for the last few years, and came upon their song "Free Kevin Kjonaas" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmdbRDbY3_M - they've got some more animal "rights"-y songs, for those who are interested, such as "Behind the Mask", "Free Me", "FTN", and their official video for "Open Your Eyes").

Another version of the song is played during the clip below, which can fill you in on some of the details of the Kjonaas/SHAC 7 case:A news article with some more easy-to-digest info: http://motherjones.com/politics/2006/01/americas-1-threat

"Until quite recently, Kjonaas was president of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC USA), an animal rights group dedicated to shutting down Huntingdon Life Sciences. The U.K.-based company owns labs in New Jersey, where it tests household chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other products on animals. In 1998, the U.S. Department of Agriculture fined Huntingdon $50,000 for animal abuses. A British television documentary showed clips of Huntingdon employees punching beagle puppies. Kjonaas grew up with a beagle named Barney. “He was my best friend,” he says. “We did everything together.”

[...]

"On May 20, 2004, Kjonaas and six other SHAC members were indicted by a New Jersey grand jury on federal charges that they had orchestrated an interstate campaign of terrorism and intimidation in violation of the Animal Enterprise Protection Act. The law, originally passed in 1992, was strengthened after 9/11 in response to heavy lobbying from animal-testing firms and pharmaceutical companies. The changes made it easier to convict people for attacks on animal-testing facilities and in some cases tripled mandatory jail sentences."

May not be much most of us can do at this point, personally, other than spreading the word through our channels and raising people's awareness of the absurdity of giving such harsh sentencing for so little "wrong"-doing, and the cruelty that goes on as part of animal-testing (or even just workers needlessly taking out their aggression on the animals, as shown in the video). There's contact information for Kjonaas and his also-still-jailed friend Lauren, if you'd like to write them, on their site: http://www.shac7.com/

Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=15366615500

I feel for myself that it is not enough anymore that I just don't eat or use animals. I feel that I can not NOT participate actively in stopping the suffering and lack of compassion from good people, like my sister - she is a "good" person, but she doesnt "care" (in denial). Most people do not search to find the reality of what goes on to produce meat, dairy, eggs, leather, fur, cashmere, wool, cosmetics, new medications or any products tested on imprisoned animals like pet food and drugs and chemicals tested on their skin; cats, bunnies, burning them over and over for weeks. It is gross and unbearable to look at so people don't. But most are good people and would not agree that the atrocities are OK if they would watch documentaries like EARTHLINGS. They really need more of us actively working to show them why to care...which is to ultimately raise compassion/love for all beings/ all children of God. To participate in the suffering of another being is to doom oneself to one's own suffering, we are all connected. We who do know truth can be active to show them how they can reject the lies and hatred and raise their lifestyles up to meet their own moral requirements. They (those in denial) just don't see this truth, they believe that they have nothing to do with condemning humanity to infinate suffering just because animals are tortured for our selfish gain, but that is true because we are all one. People can't be bothered to care about animals suffering because the people themselves are suffering, but they dont think to understand that if they cared to change > to love more > to not project their own suffering on to these poor "lesser beings" then humanity as a whole will rise up in love more and all violence / suffering will become less. Then less. Then less. I think that the next step for a documentary on the animal torturing industries to take is to help the average viewers see that link between compassion for animals and saving himself from more (eternal) suffering. Show that it is not just about animals but also about healing the hate that we project outwardly on to others which comes from AND causes more internal suffering for each of us who do not change. (I know you all don't need this lecture, but it is why I feel I have to do more). I have until now thought that it was enough for me to live my life as a vegan, not eating or using animals. Is that enough? I want to really be effective, I want to really help wake the delusional/in denial masses up....to raise up compassion. Will humanity feel compassion for animals before we feel unconditional love/compassion for our suffering brothers and sisters? Or will it be the other way around?Anyone work for an animal rights non-profit? Which one?Do you get out for protests?Volunteer? Hand out leaflets?I often give money or joined as a donation member to organizations. But now I feel lame just doing that. I know it "helps" but..I have volunteered in phases but then I get too "busy" in my life.I have been to "busy" to go to protests; or to timid for some of them.I don't want to be that anymore, I am praying for the divine inspiration to somehow make animal rights activism my next career and until then volunteer.I have just ordered some "Why Vegan" brochures to pass out on my own time. I'll go to Santa Monica Promenade where the teens and parents are. But do brochures really get thru?Is Peta really guilty of the euthanasia and other things they are charged with?Who of you is really out there actively defending these tortured beings? I can not leave my job yet, but I want to start volunteering with the best organization to perhaps in the future find a job with.

Hey all,Last night Paula (Analogies on 30BaD) and I rode our bikes to the government center in Miami to ride with a group of about 200 cyclists for "Critical Mass", a mass bike ride to raise awareness that cars need to share the road with cyclists. Plus, it's really fun, too :)Anyways, here's the link. When the video is still, before you press play, Paula and I are on the screen (Paula is in front of me, in all black, and I am behind her in an orange shirt.)Channel 10 NewsAlso, during the ride, I met someone doing a documentary on people in Miami making positive change. I mentioned that I run my own little business selling tropical fruit, and he whipped out a video camera and we did an interview right there, during the ride LOL! We didn't even stop!Anyways, it was a great night, and I plan on doing it regularly. For anyone interested, you can go to Critical Mass Meetup Group.Enjoy!Taylor
