Best way to make a difference for animals + vegan entrepreneurship

Hey Guys,

I hope you're all doing well. I wanted to know what do you guys think is the best way to make a difference as a vegan? I've pondered this question for a long time and always am because it's the most important thing for me, to make a difference. I've asked couple of President of non-profits like MFA, Farm Sanctuary, Vegan Outreach, etc and I read a book called "Being Great At Doing Good" by Nick Cooney, a guy from MFA that talks about the subject and from what I've taken from these conversations was that starting a business and giving my money to non-profits, could make a really big impact, a bigger one than possibly going to be a speaker and talk about animal rights. I've always been interested in starting a business, but this made me realize that I could serve the animals while doing it. The speaker routes seem interesting as well and the great Gary Yourofsky in a total inspiration because he made more of a difference than a lot of organizations in my opinion, but I don't know anyone else that has had as close to as much success him, so that's why I think that going and starting a business might be a better way. Besides that, there's nothing that prevents you from speaking animal rights even though you're starting a business. I just want to serve the animals as best as I can because the truth of the matter is that when I die, I want to be remembered as someone who cared for animals and that did his best to save as many of them, that's the most important thing for me. I wanted to get your guys opinion on the subject.

I recently read this article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/nathan-j-winograd/did-an-abused-monkey-pick_b_8341554.html which says, in short, monkeys are often used as slaves to harvest coconuts. Monkeys who are slaves to harvesting coconuts are abused and chained. I recommend reading the article for yourself. If you plan to buy coconut(s)/coconut products, I recommend figuring out how that company harvests their coconuts. Is anyone else aware of this?

I don't think that there's one. In Spain, we have Jamón Serrano and people always say that is recommended to eat 100 grams a day. They say that is good for your cardiovascular health and that lowers cholesterol. I'm like what? It's full of sodium plus we all can healthy fats without killing animals.

Zinc/Copper ratio! HELP!

I searched and googled it, and came to that article, that says the only way of doing it properly is with animal foods, and that vegetarian diets all cause zinc depletion and excess copper!Help please, anyone who know about this inthe raw 801010 aproach?Thanks!

Ok. I'm really confused here. I was watching a show I had DVR'd back on April 19th where she interviews a doctor who wrote the book Grain Brain. He talked about how ALL carbs are bad for you and Carol agrees. I thought she was raw vegan. That means a fruit eater, right?! He promotes animal products and fats, including butter. Does nobody else see the discrepancy here? It was so great (I thought) to think there was a celeb promoting raw vegan but now I don't know. Please respond.Meanwhile, I need to go and meditate to calm myself down. I mean, she even had David Wolfe on an episode who talks about glucose and how we need carbs to feed our brains.Ok. I take a deep breath and relax. I'm finally following a high carb low fat lifestyle and it seems to be so awesome but then this. I guess I need to step back and remember that we create our reality and maybe for some, this works and for me, my reality is high carb low fat raw vegan.

Sexism

I very recently went through a fairly stressful few days during which I posted many controversial ideas into various Facebook discussions. As a result I was unfriended by at least three people and blocked by at least two - judgmental people more eager to exercise their prejudice, intolerance and lack of empathy than to seek truth, exercise compassion or show respect.

During a somewhat heated discussion I used a phrase (while in a frustrated state of mind prompted by not following the rules on sleep as closely as I should) which several people perceived as being sexist. The use of that phrase directly resulted in someone I know (away from the Internet) booting me from his Friends list, and without even telling me first or discussing the issue (I found out why he booted me from a mutual friend). That, and some others complaining to me about my use of the phrase in question, led me to write a short essay on it to serve as an explanation of my action and also to discuss associated factors.

In the greatest act of homicide in human history Adolf Hitler used CATTLE TRUCKS and a CATTLE RAILROAD NETWORK to carry the victims of the holocaust to their end.

Did you notice any similarity in any of these cases?

Yes, none of them would have been possible without animal exploitation.

Perhaps the most politically digestible justification for veganism is just protection of the human body.

The owner of the slaughter house intends to hire 40-100 people, and Tim is the first employee of Valley Meat Co.

I finally had the last straw with a now former friend who had such lack of respect for life and ARAs that I couldn't take seeing him around on my FB one more second.

Why do SAD eaters want respect out of us for their choices when I catch the mantra of "vegans are so stupid" every friggin' day?

I don't often post, but I do lurk here. I have been a vegan for 4+ years so the following is hard to swallow. I just need some fellow vegan insight and support.

I live in the Western United States. Hunting capitol of the world. Many people pay to come here and hunt. I am currently in college studying Elementary education and while I was in a class observing, I was invited to read the students' writing journals.

One of these journals was nothing but an ode to hunting. This was a 10 year old child mind you. The most disturbing passage went like this: I get to go hunting with my dad this weekend. I am really excited. I get to ride my bike and my dad usually lets me slit...

OK, I really can't even finish it. It was too terrible. This kid was only 10 and it could have been a page from the diary of Elizabeth Bathory. Well, maybe not quite that bad, but still, pretty bad. The worst part was that he was so excited and blase about it.

I believe that this was how people perpetuate the idea that killing animals is OK, normal and even exciting. I feel awful! How can people not see this as a problem? We are teaching our children a total disregard for life out here.

the food after the sweatlodge

last weekend i went to a sweatlodge

all these people were so busy with spiritual things and energy and Spirit

but after the ceremony they all cram their body full with animal food

for me it was so confusing and shocking: praying for the earth

but keep eating animals/animal stuff ...

actually i could not understand why the sweatlodge ceremony leader said "the bizon gives his life for the humans"??? did he?

imagine sweatlodges with only organic fruits and vegetables!

that would be so great!

next time i will propose it :)

Would it be classified as extremism if an animal did it?

When animal rights activists break the law on behalf of animals it's called extremism. However if a farm animal attacked a farmer, or a vivisection animal attacked a vivisectionist, would that be classified as extremism? The animal may carry out acts that are similar to what some animal rights activists are known to do; i.e. damaging property and assaulting animal abusers.

Let's take the scenario of a piglet about to have it's teeth removed without anaesthesia (a horrifying operation carried out everyday in pig factory farms all over the world). Now if an animal rights activist saw this happening and bit the farmhand's finger off, this would be considered immense extremism despite being rather trivial compared to the acts of horror carried out by farmers. However, if the piglet bit the farmhand's finger off, would that really be classified as extremism on the part of the piglet? If someone was about to rip your teeth out surely biting their finger(s) off would be an entirely reasonable reaction. Poetic justice even.

In conclusion should animal rights activists be considered extremists just for doing what the animals aspire to do anyway? A Buffalo would not be considered an extremist for killing a lion that attacked it, and humans are not the only animals who try to defend species other than themselves from attacks.

The Bull Who Cried:

Knowing it was about to be slaughtered, a bull in Hong Kong did what many people fail to realize or are skeptic about when it comes to animals - he showed emotion.

As reported by "Weekly World News", a group of workers walked a bull to a packaging factory. They were about to slaughter him to make steaks and beef stews. When they were close to the front door of the slaughter h

ouse, the sorrowful bull suddenly stopped going forward and knelt down on his two front legs. The bull... was all in tears.

How did he know he was going to get killed before he entered the slaughter house? He is even smarter than people.

Mr. Shiu, a butcher recalled, "When I saw this kind of so-called "stupid" animal sobbing and with his eyes in fear and sorrow, I started trembling." "I called the rest over to see. They were just as surprised. We kept pushing the bull forward, but he just didn't want to move and sat there crying."

Billy Fong, owner of the packaging factory said, "People thought animals didn't cry like human beings. However that bull really sobbed like a baby." At that time, more than ten strong men witnessed the scene and they were all touched. Those who were responsible for slaughtering even felt more touched and teared as well.

Other workers working at the same slaughter house also came to see the crying bull. It was all packed with people. They were all shock by this scene. Three of them said they would never forget this crying bull when they slaughter other animals.

With both man and animal crying, everyone knew that nobody could kill the bull. The problem was, what should they do with him? In the end, they raised funds to buy this crying bull and sent him to a temple, where the kind monks would take care of him for life.

After the workers had made a decision, a miracle happened. A worker said, "When we promised this bull that we will not kill him, he started moving and followed us."

How did he understand people's words?

Mr. Shiu said "Believe it or not? This is real although it sounds unbelievable." No doubt, this bull changed these butchers' lives.
