I've noticed there are a few weekly markets in the area plus a few fruit shops around the city but I would be really keen to get details of some fruit growers who sell straight off the farm.........Also anyone know if there is anywhere in Darwin that sells frozen durian? .........Any tips and advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Of course I have a good bit of questions.

1) Is anyone familiar with/does anyone know if it is possible for German citizens to do farm work (and get paid) in Australia in the same place for a year without having to pay a ridiculous amount of money for the programme?

2) Is anyone familiar with 80/10/10-friendly/vegan-friendly farms in Australia where such farm work is possible?

3) I've heard of Cariad Farm for example, which would be great. But farms that exclusively focus on fruit-picking or any sort of vegan-friendly assignments would be good.

I am much appreciative for any feedback. :)

Many thanks in advance!

(First post, yay!)

Buying (good quality, non oil-laden) dates seems to be a challenge faced by most 30badders residing in Australia (unless money is not your problem!).

I've read people talking about buying dates through Santos and Dates Australia -- they seem to be the most popular sources.

My question: has anyone purchased dates through goodness.com.au?

Whilst their Organic Medjool dates are rather pricey, pitted dates (Iranian) are about $31 for 10kg. Although I understand that organic ones are superior, these seem like a good option for me since I cannot dish out ~$100 for a 5kg box (I haven't checked but I am assuming no preservatives are added in these pitted dates).

http://www.goodness.com.au/store/Dried-Fruits/c46/p344/Dates-Pitted-10KG/product_info.html?CDpath=1

If I soak and blend them to make datorade, the dryness (judging from the picture) shouldn't be a problem, right?

Looking forward to any advice/insight!

They also have sprouted coconuts (sooo yum)

If you're ever in cairns, hit them up at Rusty's market, where their current stand is friday-sunday. And when their restaurant opens, check it out! Some of their menu items are shown in the video.

Hi :-)

I'm new to this site.. and well, completely new to the raw food diet, but want to start off right.

I'd like to get myself whatever tool it is you lot are using to my those zucchini noodles- what is it?? And more importantly, where can I buy it in Australia. I found a saladucci and another brand one on two different websites, but neither will send to Australia!! I've looked in all the local 'home' stores which have all those kitchen gadgets with no luck (the closest I've found was a gadget to making potato curly fries so too thick for what I want). Can anyone help?

The the other thing I'm wanting is an australian website to buy bulk lots of raw almonds (among other things)- anyone got themselves a dealer they can hook me up with? lol

Hmm.. there was something I wannted to ask, too.. but I can't remember now :-/

Anyway, your knowledge would be appreciated! :-)

I’m a girl from Denmark who is currently in Melbourne. I’m trying to figure out what my next move is going to be. I don’t have a lot of money, so I wanna travel in a cheap way. I don’t have anything for traveling (like tent etc.), so I’ll need to buy stuff if I need it. I hope I can get a really cheap (anyone have anything to say about buying a used car?) I’m only gonna need it for a couple of months, but I can’t see how I can make my way around Australia without a vehicle……

I’m very open to any suggestions experienced travelers or people who have something they would be willing to lend out for a period of time!

I have thought about the housesitting idea as well, anyone with experience to share in that area?

Thank you for your time!

Harley, could you please do video response to this?

Reported from the ABC News website:

(Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

The dietary guidelines outlining what foods Australians should be eating have been updated for the first time in eight years.

New draft advice from the National Health and Medical Research Council gives more detail about what kinds of food help reduce chronic diseases.

The council says the rising incidence of obesity and diabetes shows Australians need to re-assess their diets.

The draft also outlines the dietary needs of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and babies from as young as seven months old for the first time.

Review committee chairwoman Doctor Amanda Lee says the new advice is based on a comprehensive review of the latest scientific evidence.

"What we have now is greater differentiation between different types of food; for example for the vegetable group we now know that we need to eat a variety of different types and colours to decrease our risk of various kinds of cancer," she said.

"[Also] there's stronger evidence supporting the benefits of fruit, particularly for cardiovascular disease."

Dr Lee says the review confirms the basic dietary patterns of the previous guidelines.

"For some foods the evidence has strengthened, for example, there's increasing evidence that consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks is associated with increased risk of weight gain," she said.

"There's good evidence now that consumption of milk is associated with decreased risk of heart disease in some cases.

"There's really good evidence now about the association of whole grain products and decreased risk of heart disease, excessive weight gain and also decreased risk of type-2 diabetes."

For the first time, the guidelines recommend what children should eat from the age of seven months to two years.

Dr Lee says by the time children go to pre-school in Australia, 20 per cent of them are already overweight or obese.

Not heeding advice

The guidelines may have not changed too much, but Dr Lee says the latest data shows people are still not listening to the advice.

"We need to eat double the amount of vegetables and fruits, double the amount of wholegrain cereals, much more milk, yoghurt and low-fat cheese, and increasing our lean poultry and fish," she said.

"We're all going to get fatter unless we think very seriously about the foods we need to eat less of."

Dr Lee says too many Australians underestimate just how much exercise they need to do to work off junk food.

Nutritionist Nicole Senior, who was not involved in the review, says she is pleased the new guidelines distinguish between good fats, like oils and nuts, and bad fats, like those in sausages and fast food.

"We're now encouraged to include small amounts of food that contain unsaturated fats. Because we do need to eat those foods and I think they've been sort of tarnished a bit," she said.

The head of the nutrition department at La Trobe University, Catherine Itsiopoulos, says the new guidelines are not biased to any particular type of food.

"They cover a range of cultural eating patterns as well," she said.

"Equally all key sources of dairy foods are represented, including non-dairy sources of calcium, like soy products."

Professor Itsiopoulos says the next step is to devise easily accessible eating plans and recipes so people can put these guidelines into practice.

What does everyone think?

If you would like to provide feedback on the draft Australian Dietary Guidelines they have opened it up for "public consultation" here http://www.eatforhealth.gov.au/

This is my first post so Hi to everyone and look forward to many more conversations in the future.
