It’s pretty obvious why some people choose not to eat meat or wear fur, but why someone wouldn’t use silk is just plain baffling to most. So here’s the deal.

When we think of silk we imagine beautiful gowns, delicate underwear and lavish furnishings, what we definitely don’t picture is live silk worms being plunged into vats of boiling water. And why would we? This certainly isn’t going to make us want to reach for our wallets, instead it is likely to make us reel with disgust.

The Plight of the Silk Worm

Just like cows, chickens and pigs, silk worms are domesticated, raised and bred on factory farms and are also killed by the hundreds of millions every year. To make one single pound of silk 2000-3000 worms have to be slaughtered.

Just prior to the metamorphosis stage where Bombyx Mori silk worms transform into moths, they spin fibers to create their cocoons. Naturally, the moth would chew its way out of this cocoon once the transformation is complete, but the problem this poses to the silk manufacturing industry is this natural development would result in chewed silk strands that are much shorter and less valuable than the intact cocoon. Which is why when the silk worms are in their pupa stage after being fed a strict diet of mulberry leaves, they are placed while still alive into boiling hot water, killing them and starting the process of unraveling the cocoon to produce silk.

Ahisma is another method of silk production that don’t include death for the silk worms. Although not resulting in death, there are still ethical issues surrounding the domestication and farming, such as adult moths being unable to fly because their bodies are too large and males unable to eat due to undeveloped mouth parts.

Some among us will try to claim that silk worms don’t matter and that they are just insects. While it’s true that we have a limited depth of understanding about insects, what we do know is that they have the capacity to feel and the right to live free from pain and suffering.

Give Peace Silk a Chance

If you’re a lover of silk then fear not as you don’t have to go without. Peace silk is a cruelty free, fairtrade alternative that is woven by hand in India. This animal-friendly silk is harvested from the cocoons of the wild and native Eri moth. The cocoons are collected from the forest after the moth has emerged and flown away, meaning no one has to be kept in captivity.

Peace silk is becoming the fabric of choice by many designers worldwide as people open their eyes to the plight of the silk worm, which is good news for you. A quick internet search will reveal a whole host of producers so there is no excuse not to buy your silk from an ethical source.

Other Alternatives

If you prefer to avoid animal products altogether, there are other alternatives available. Lyocell, silk cotton, ceiba tree filaments and milkweed seed pod fibers are all eco friendly options worth exploring.

The dark and disturbing world of silk worms isn’t one that gets much media coverage, beause the industry believes that we simply don’t care enough to care, but that doesn’t have to be the case. You can reject these inhumane practices and opt to buy cruelty free alternatives instead. We do not need to exploit insects, or any other animal for that matter, and no amount of whitewashing will justify using these tiny beings as resources for our own ends.

Paul McCartney famously said, "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian." So an intrepid group of animal advocates found a way to bring the slaughterhouse to the sidewalk. Every Saturday night, volunteers Jennifer Mennuti and Boyd Weidman screen PETA's "Factory Farming in 60 Seconds Flat" for passersby on Miami's busy Lincoln Road.

For many people, it's the first time they are staring into the faces of the animals they call "steak," "ham," or "nugget." There in front of them is the irrefutable evidence that their "entrée" was a cow who coughed and choked as the blood spilling from her slit throat ran down her face and covered the floor below, a pig who screamed and cried as he was burned to death in scalding-hot water, a chicken whose desperate squawks went unheeded as her broken legs were slammed into shackles and she stared past the long line of her comrades to the whirring blades that would end her life. A photographer caught some of the people's reactions, and it seems Paul was right.

PETA supporter Andrew Kirschner, who hosts a radio talk show about animal rights, published the photos on his blog, Kirschner's Corner, accompanied by the real-life experiences of slaughterhouse workers, taken from Gail A. Eisnitz's book Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment Inside the U.S. Meat Industry.

"I could tell you horror stories… about cattle getting their heads stuck under the gate guards and the only way you can get it out is to cut their heads off while they're still alive."

"One time I took my knife – it's sharp enough – and I sliced off the end of a hog's nose, just like a piece of bologna. The hog went crazy for a few seconds. Then it just sat there looking kind of stupid. So I took a handful of salt brine and ground it into his nose. Now that hog really went nuts, pushing its nose all over the place. I still had a bunch of salt in my hand – I was wearing a rubber glove – and I stuck the salt right up the hog's ass. The poor hog didn't know whether to **** or go blind."

"I've seen live animals shackled, hoisted, stuck, and skinned. Too many to count, too many to remember. It's just a process that's continually there. I've seen shackled beef looking around before they've been stuck. I've seen hogs [that are supposed to be lying down] on the bleeding conveyor get up after they've been stuck. I've seen hogs in the scalding tub trying to swim."

"These hogs get up to the scalding tank, hit the water and start screaming and kicking. Sometimes they thrash so much they kick water out of the tank… Sooner or later they drown. There's a rotating arm that pushes them under, no chance for them to get out. I'm not sure if they burn to death before they drown, but it takes them a couple of minutes to stop thrashing."

"Hogs get stressed out pretty easy. If you prod them too much they have heart attacks. If you get a hog in a chute that's had the **** prodded out of him and has a heart attack or refuses to move, you take a meat hook and hook it into his bunghole [anus]. You're dragging these hogs alive, and a lot of times the meat hook rips out of the bunghole. I've seen hams – thighs – completely ripped open. I've also seen intestines come out. If the hog collapses near the front of the chute, you shove the meat hook into his cheek and drag him forward."

"Sometimes I grab it [a hog] by the ear and stick it right through the eye. I'm not just taking its eye out, I'll go all the way to the hilt, right up through the brain, and wiggle the knife."

"Pigs on the kill floor have come up and nuzzled me like a puppy. Two minutes later I had to kill them – beat them to death with a pipe."

"Only you don't just kill it, you go in hard, push hard, blow the windpipe, make it drown in its own blood. Split its nose. A live hog would be running around the pit. It would just be looking up at me and I'd be sticking, and I would just take my knife and – cut its eye out while it was just standing there. And this hog would just scream."

"I seen guys take broomsticks and stick it up the cow's behind, screwing them with a broom."

"He'll kick them [hogs], fork them, use anything he can get his hands on. He's already broken three pitchforks so far this year, just jabbing them. He doesn't care if he hits its eyes, head, butt. He jabs them so hard he busts the wooden handles. And he clubs them over the back."

"I've drug cows till their bones start breaking, while they were still alive. Bringing them around the corner and they get stuck up in the doorway, just pull them till their hide be ripped, till the blood just drip on the steel and concrete. I don't often post, but I do lurk here. I have been a vegan for 4+ years so the following is hard to swallow. I just need some fellow vegan insight and support.

I live in the Western United States. Hunting capitol of the world. Many people pay to come here and hunt. I am currently in college studying Elementary education and while I was in a class observing, I was invited to read the students' writing journals.

One of these journals was nothing but an ode to hunting. This was a 10 year old child mind you. The most disturbing passage went like this: I get to go hunting with my dad this weekend. I am really excited. I get to ride my bike and my dad usually lets me slit...

OK, I really can't even finish it. It was too terrible. This kid was only 10 and it could have been a page from the diary of Elizabeth Bathory. Well, maybe not quite that bad, but still, pretty bad. The worst part was that he was so excited and blase about it.

I believe that this was how people perpetuate the idea that killing animals is OK, normal and even exciting. I feel awful! How can people not see this as a problem? We are teaching our children a total disregard for life out here.

well of course it is!

so is abusing your child, battering your spouse and killing your neighbor.

these are all personal choices.

anyone is free to make a personal choice, but no one should expect to be exempt from facing the consequences of that personal choice.

here's how robert grillo exposes the inappropriateness of PCC with respect to corpse eating which really is just another one of those rationalizations desperately trying to defend the indefensible:

5 Reasons Why Meat-Eating Can’t Be Considered A ‘Personal Choice’

Of all the convoluted rationalizations for eating meat in an age when eating meat is not at all necessary for our survival or health, many people today are borrowing a popular slogan I like to call “the personal choice self-deception.” It goes something like this: “My decision to eat meat is a personal choice.” And it is usually followed by a statement sympathetic to their vegan and vegetarian friends, acknowledging that they too are making personal choices that are right for them. Sounds great on the surface, but it’s what lurks beyond the surface that I find deeply disturbing for five key reasons.

1. Eating is a communal, multi-cultural activity until the vegan sits down at the table

First, let’s take a closer look at what personal means in the context of the highly social human activity of eating. Personal food choices had never been discussed at the dinner table until a growing number of vegans and vegetarians — by their very presence at the table — question the legitimacy of eating animals. A person who tells you that their meat eating is a personal choice is really telling you “stay away.” They don’t want you to question their highly-coveted moral beliefs or perhaps they object to exposing their unexamined moral quandary over how one can justify using and killing animals for food in an age when it is completely unnecessary. In other words, “They have made this issue personal precisely in response to you making it public.”

2. There is no free choice without awareness

The irony is that while meat eaters defend their choice to eat meat as a personal one, they will nonetheless go to great lengths to defend it publicly when confronted with a vegan or vegetarian. Like some apologetic white liberals who defend themselves by defiantly exclaiming to a new black acquaintance, “But I have black friends too!”, some meat eaters will go to great lengths to explain how intimately they understand veganism since they have vegan friends, have already heard and evaluated their reasons for going vegan and respect them dearly.

They’ve considered being vegan carefully, they will assure you, and have concluded that it’s just not for them. But instead of arriving at some novel new understanding of why humans should eat meat, they simply revert back to the traditional arguments that are all pretty much centered around what social psychologist Melanie Joy calls the three N’s of justification: eating meat is normal, natural and necessary. But their reasoning reveals the fact that they have sorely overlooked the big idea behind veganism which author Jenny Brown points out so eloquently in her book The Lucky Ones: “We can become prisoners of our earliest indoctrinations or we can choose to look critically at our assumptions and align our lives with our values. Choosing to live vegan is how we’re able to do that best.”

3. The choice has a victim and the victim is completely ignored

Let’s take a look at the issue from the animal victim’s perspective which has been completely denied by the meat eater’s unexamined assumption that animals have no interest or understanding of the value of their individual lives. Does the animal who is being bred, raised and slaughtered for someone’s food care if the person who is eating meat has given the prospect of becoming vegan any serious moral consideration? Of course not.

The notion that these conscious meat eaters think they have done their due diligence by examining the pros and cons of eating animals means nothing for those that value their lives as we do. The fact is the animals we raise for meat have at least as much of an interest in staying alive, avoiding pain and suffering and seeking pleasure as these meat eaters’ pets. As activist Twyla Francois so aptly puts it: “All animals have the same capacity for suffering, but how we see them differs and that determines what we’ll tolerate happening to them. In the western world, we feel it wrong to torture and eat cats and dogs, but perfectly acceptable to do the same to animals equally as sentient and capable of suffering. No being who prides himself on rationality can continue to support such behaviour.”

4. Many personal choices we make have dire consequence for ourselves and others

Now let’s take a closer look at the meaning of choice itself. The act of making a choice implies that the actor has free will and awareness of the options and their consequences. In the spirit of justice, we live in a society where our actions and choices are governed by what society deems acceptable. We can make a personal choice to maim, rape or kill someone, but these actions will have consequences that serve as a deterrent. It is generally accepted in a democratic society that we are free to do what we want as long as it doesn’t harm anyone else or infringe on the same rights and freedoms of others.

Yet, for the meat eater, the choice of eating animals is completely disconnected from this concept of justice since justice does NOT for them apply to other species, only to humans (how convenient). In other words, there are no visible, negative consequences to eating meat. The victims remain invisible and silent to those who eat them, and that is perhaps the greatest deception of all.

5. Atrocities are never personal

In reality, the choice to eat meat negates the very meaning of choice because the animal that had to be killed to procure the meat had no choice in the matter at all. And the notion of characterizing such a choice as a personal one is even more problematic since the choice required the taking of another’s life, not a personal sacrifice. Nothing could be more public than the taking of a sentient life that cares about his own life, particularly when the act is not necessary and therefore not morally defensible.

When 60 billion land animals and another approximate 60 billion marine animals are killed every year across the planet for “personal” food choices made by a single species that are based on palate pleasure alone, eating meat ceases to be a matter of personal choice; it becomes a social justice movement to protect the rights of animals. To deny animals the right to live their lives according to their own interests is wrong and to attempt to defend our choice to eat them as a personal one is delusional.

Something that another member (David Costa- Hi I'm AJ I hope it's okay that I borrowed this quote from your post) wrote really resonated with me-

"After seeing how I can live without meat the animal cruelty issue starts to bother me more."

I did go vegan for selfish reasons- good health, which I guess is not so selfish in a negative way, but I was only doing it for me. Once I started doing more research about the lifestyle and learned that we really have no business eating animals, the cruelty of the industry started to affect me quite strongly. It reawakened my lifelong love of animals- when I was younger, my parents used to joke that I would own a farm one day. Throughout my youth and teen years(which are not so far gone, I'm only 21 =] ) I lost focus of what I loved. I ate meat, I was a major consumer even though I consumed things that were "un-mainstream" for the most part.

After being vegan for almost a year now, I've gotten back in touch with how much I love animals. My veg roommate and I have talked about moving to Florida so we can grow our own food and rescue pigs. This is something I never would have imagined I'd be dreaming of doing a year ago!

I love animals so much and I feel that speaking up for them and educating people about the cruelty in the industry (combined with a humanitarian/environmental approach) is a huge part of my mission now. Just wanted to see if anyone else felt this way, or if anyone had something special they love about animals that they wanted to share!

So, here's the newest thing that comes from Germany - a country I sadly call my neighbors since I'm Austrian: It's called "Meine Kleine Farm - Wir geben Fleisch ein Gesicht" (transl. "My Little Farm - We Give Meat A Face"), an online meat-ordering service where customers can select their favorite pig to get slaughtered and made into bite-sized meat chunks.

But they didn't stop there. In memory of the sacrifice the pig made for the consumer to have a tasty meal of heart attack sausage, they put the piggy's photo on the packaging...

Dennis Buchmann, who came up with the idea has declared that he "is on a mission to change the way consumers think about meat. He thinks people should eat less meat and show more respect to the animals."

I mean it's great that he tries to show where the sausage came from to the consumer, who seems to have completely forgotten that meat products actually come from living, breathing beings.

If he really wanted to make consumers change their viewpoint and have respect for the animals, then he should be sending them a DVD with the full horrific depiction of how they killed that poor little pig.
Maybe consumers can select in which way to exactly slaughter the poor thing next. Rod to the brain? Slashing the throat? There will be an extra charge for that, of course...

But, Dennis unfortunately "doesn’t want to make consumers feel bad about eating meat"... I think that he just failed his mission...

This story just made me so mad, I can't even sill still right now! WTF???

A new Mercy For Animals undercover investigation provides a horrifying look into E6 Cattle Co. in Hart, Texas.

E6 Cattle rears calves for use on dairy farms, confining approximately 10,000 calves and subjecting them to lives of prolonged neglect and misery. For over two weeks in March of 2011, an MFA undercover investigator documented the operation's deplorable conditions and brutal mistreatment of animals.

MFA's hidden camera reveals:

Workers bludgeoning calves in their skulls with pickaxes and hammers – often involving 5 to 6 blows, sometimes more – before rendering the animals unconscious
Beaten calves, still alive and conscious, thrown onto dead piles
Workers kicking downed calves in the head, and standing on their necks and ribs
Calves confined to squalid hutches, thick with manure and urine buildup, and barely large enough for the calves to turn around or fully extend their legs
Gruesome injuries and afflictions, including open sores, swollen joints and severed hooves
Ill, injured and dying calves denied medical care
The budding horns of calves burned out their skulls without painkillers

Upon reviewing the undercover footage, Temple Grandin, PhD, animal welfare advisor to USDA, declared: "It is obvious that both the management and the employees have no regard for animal welfare."

Colorado State University Professor of Animal Sciences Dr. Bernard Rollin also condemned the operation: "I urge everyone in a position of authority to serve notice to the world that this sort of behavior has no place in a society wishing to consider itself civilized. These people must be corrected with the full force of the legal system."

Dr. Armaiti May, a practicing veterinarian experienced in the care of farmed animals, echoed Dr. Rollin's sentiment, recommending that "charges of animal cruelty be brought against the workers involved and that the farm be shut down for cruel treatment of animals and lack of proper oversight of its workers."

The owner of E6 Cattle required his employees to bash in the calves' heads with a claw hammer, forcing them to condemn calves to a prolonged and horrific death. As Debra Teachout, DVM, asserts, "They feel every blow until they become unconscious." The American Veterinary Medical Association condemns the use of blows to the head as a means of killing young calves.

Promptly following the undercover investigation, MFA alerted law enforcement authorities to violations of Texas anti-cruelty law at E6 Cattle, and presented a detailed legal complaint and meticulously compiled evidence of such violations to the Castro County District Attorney and sheriff. The evidence demonstrated an ongoing pattern of torture, unjustifiable infliction of pain and suffering on animals, and a failure to provide necessary medical care.

As MFA continues to expose the unconscionable cruelties of animal agriculture, and to diligently pursue justice by aiding prosecutions of animal abusers, consumers still hold the greatest power of all to end the needless suffering and death of calves – and all farmed animals – by adopting a compassionate, vegan diet.

BS! I just heard that from a friend that did an interview with a pig farmer that works in the city Linköping,that told her honestly, that their workers sometimes killed baby pigs with their boots by stomping on them.

Sweden just joined the rest of the world. Gah!

Just in case you haven't received the attached.   Yesterday morning I read about Lufthansa's transport of animals from New York to a horror chamber in England. I immediately sent a thundering letter to the Lufthansa person in charge of cargo. (I was stewardess with Lufthansa for 5 years). I sent the cargo chief's address to many friends who also wrote immediately. And then another 22,000 people flooded the LH office with emails. It only took 24 hours to change the company's mind. What LH did was criminal, but at least they listened.

Wouldn't it be neat if our government would listen after so many years and stop their crimes?   Hopefully the slaughter will be over this year and forever.

SHARK Calls for Independent Investigation into Possible Unethical Behavior

On Feb. 9, 2010, SHARK signed a contract with Clear Channel Outdoor for a billboard to be placed on Route 95 in Philadelphia, starting the week of March 15. We paid the full amount, $2,626, up front, and everything was set to go

There were no signs whatsoever that Clear Channel had any problems with the billboard (the billboard only has a picture of a bloody feather, and a website: www.PAshame.com). In fact, on Feb. 23, SHARK signed a new contract with the company, as a billboard placement spot had opened up earlier and we were able to get that starting the week of March 1.

We even promoted the billboard at our press conference, held on Feb. 24, at the State Capitol in Harrisburg, which was covered state wide in newspapers and on TV. The press conference focused on the horrors of two pigeon shoots that had happened the weekend before, and that we were asking Governor Rendell and Attorney General Corbett to take action.

We were shocked when we received an email on March 1, the very day the billboard was to go up, from Clear Channel saying that they were pulling the billboard because of "content on the website."

"I knew immediately that there was something bigger going on here," states Stuart Chaifetz, SHARK Media Coordinator. "They had this billboard for weeks and never said a word, then suddenly there is a problem with content on the website? And it just happens that they didn't realize there was a problem until after we hold a successful press conference which put the spotlight on the Attorney General? I put a call into the President of the company, to find out what was really going on.

"On March 1, at 1:04 PM, I received a call back from George Kauker, President of the Philadelphia Division of Clear Channel. He told me that he was personally rejecting the site based on "copy," which he said was allowable under the contract. I returned that there is no copy on the billboard, just a website address. When pressed, he then admitted that the real reason why he killed the billboard was because he felt the website was an attack against Attorney General Tom Corbett.

"I asked him if he had actually seen the website, because there are no attacks against the Attorney General on PAshame.com. All there is is a letter asking Mr. Corbett to use his authority to stop what we believe are illegal pigeon shoots, and information on how people can contact him and ask him to take action. That's it. But he didn't care. He said he would not allow it and that was that.

"My personal opinion is that the anger expressed by Mr. Kauker was unwarranted and had no proportional relation to our business deal. That he had no idea what was actually on the site leads me to believe that someone had read him the riot act about this billboard, and that he was then taking it out on us. I am just thankful that he was honest and upfront and admitted that this was all about protecting the Attorney General."

These are the facts of the case:

· Clear Channel approved our billboard, and received payment for it in early February.
· The very day before the press conference, a new contract was signed with Clear Channel to get the billboard out earlier.
· A few days after the press conference, when the Attorney General took some heat in the media, the President of Clear Channel
   Philadelphia personally kills the billboard.
· Mr. Kauker admits that he was breaking the contract in order to protect the Attorney General.
· The Attorney General is running for Governor. It is possible that he or
his allies would be concerned that an issue as emotional as live
   pigeon shoots could cause him political harm.

Serious questions remain about whether Mr. Kauker was truly acting on his own volition, or if he had been asked to break the contract from either Mr. Corbett, someone in the Attorney General's office, someone from Mr. Corbett's campaign for Governor, or some other political figure.

"As we are now witnessing in New York - how powerful politicians use their authority for personal reasons - it is not impossible that some one in Pennsylvania used their power to stop this legal transaction," states Chaifetz. "This is why we need an independent investigation. Mr. Kauker should be put under oath and let's find out if there is corruption behind this."

SHARK will be sending a letter to the Attorney General asking him to assign an independent prosecutor to look into this. If he refuses, we will then take this to the U.S. Attorney. This violation of free speech, and violation of good faith business arrangement, cannot stand unopposed.

Below they have provided a sample letter, which you could re-vamp as it is very short and could probably be worded more effectively. They have provided 2 email addresses to protest to the Ministry of Transportation.

I think a second letter should be sent to the Attorney General in Columbia, pressing for prosecution of this sick animal abuser. Apparently the animal refused to walk and that is why the owner poured gasoline over it and set it alight. Posted on Friday October 23, 2009

The incident occurred east of the capital of Valle Bonilla Aragon near the neighbor hood. In a crop of sugarcane, the villagers watched as 'Paul', the carter horse from a neighbor was consumed by flames, eventually dying from burns.

"I immediately called the 123 and moved the Environmental Police personnel. It was a rough picture of animal cruelty," said Sgt Yovanni Ñáñez, commander of the Environmental Police.

The animal, a pale horse bay, about 6 years, was still alive. He suffered burns of first and third grade in 90 percent of his body. The owner of the horse and his companion surprisingly argued that they found the horse like that, and had planned to put it out of its misery!

However, the police established that they poured gasoline over the horse and set fire to it, because it had refused to walk.

Given the seriousness of the injuries it was necessary to go to Municipal Zoonosis Center, where it was decided to apply euthanasia to prevent further suffering.

"What we are asking the community to warn that when situations of violence against animals of any species, reported immediately to 123 or phone 551 78 10," said Sgt Ñáñez, who recalled that this year the unit has handled 230 cases, among which 130 have been horses.
