Greetings everyone. I'm excited to share with everyone here in tourism my passion of bicycle touring. I've been a cyclist for over 15 years getting my start in BMX, MTB, Road, Bicycle Touring/ Bikepacking. I've traveled a great deal around the globe and always wanted to figure out a way how I can turn my passion into something that can offer value to people. I'm not here to drop a link, but I do encourage you all to PM me if you are interested in guided cycling tours in New York City. I have 4 tours as of now with one that is scenic and leaves NYC for an hour. Bike touring is such a great way to experience a place and it's people. I've been open for business for about 3 months now and received 2 bookings so far. I am working hard at getting more daily. My website is optimized for mobile and other devices for anyone to book anywhere. Anxious to share a link to my website so check it out here... Bike Tours by Manual Pedal where people can book a bike tour. Would love for you to share with friends and family who may be visiting the city here. Looking forward to hearing feedback.

I have major fitness goals, i enjoy training and the cycling lifestyle. The doctor is on vacation right now so i don't have intricate details on the type of murmur, but i wanted to know what this means for my fitness goals. Anyone with some real fitness and athletic experience have anything to say? How much could this hold me back?

I don't get chest pains as far as i can tell, I don't think i ever feel desperately or dangerously short of breath during rides or on cardio machines, but i do notice that i can rarely keep up with riders that are in their 50s. I've been cycling for 9 months to one year, beforehand i had no fitness or athletic background, i came from a very sedentary lifestyle.

I'm 31 years old. Been biking all my life. Been rolling on the big wheel since I was 5. When I was 13 I got into BMX riding heavy, and played many sports through Jr. high/ high school. During this time I've had bad asthma and needed to report to the school nurse to take my inhalation pump mid day. It sucked. I carried it through high school and put it down to begin working out and change my life when I graduated.

Fast forward a bit I picked up cycling in my early twenties. Maybe around 24 years old starting with track bikes. I would ride everywhere. I picked up road bikes when I was 27 years old and fell in love. I recently got blood work done and my doctor said I'm fine and that my oxygen levels are at 99% I wasn't sure what he meant but since I started cycling I haven't picked up an asthma pump. In fact I forgot to even mention that I had it at my visit. I'm wondering if I may have reversed my asthma due to my lifestyle of eating fruits and plants with included starches.

If anyone can shed some light here that would be helpful. I'm not sure if I should pay him another visit or not. I haven't had any issues with asthma for 12 years now and haven't used any medication at all. I believe this could have reversed due to my cycling and my running over the years.

Psyched I joined up and consider myself a student and teacher of life. My goal is to gain as much knowledge from you all and share mine in return. I first found out about "30 Bananas A Day" from a friend who suggested I check out Durianrider's YouTube channel. I was about a week into my bicycle tour riding racked from New York to California which took me 75 days(you can watch the video here). I was on the path to mastery and needed inspiration which Durian provided. Not only has he changed my perspective on eating but my life. After my trip in 2014 I've been doing the "Raw Till 4" lifestyle and my cycling and overall life has improved.

While I still have many things to work on, I'd like to gain more of a knowledge base around food and what it does for my body and how it can improve my cycling. I have a website which you can check out at Manual Pedal and YouTube channel. I've been biking all my life. My dad said one I picked up my bike I never put it down and he's right, I never will put it down until it's my time. I started in BMX which then led me to track and road cycling. I now do road cycling exclusively and bike touring and bikepacking when time permits.

I can often go off in tangents so to leave on a lite note... I'm really psyched to be apart of this community and looking forward to learning and sharing.

Best Regards,

Dwayne _/\_

Pacing is critical. As much as cadence, water and sugar. I didnt use any stims or pain killers and took a quick 10-15 min power nap.

I didnt have any support team other than Freelee came out to give me a bowl of pasta and a few ginger beers after 15hours of riding.

Instead I just had a 10liter cask of water on the side of the road and had a bag of carbs attached to a string that I tied to a tree near the first hair pin and would stop there every few laps to pull up the bag and restock the jersey pockets.

I had high powered lights and took it really easy on each descent especially towards midnight when animals are around and fatigue has slowed down a riders response.

Here is my strava data for my first everesting.

https://www.strava.com/activities/217380787

I was super lean and cut. After starting the lifestyle, in November, all of my lean muscle turned to fat. Now, I've been focusing a lot of cycling (mainly indoor for now until it gets warmer here in Philly). I'm not worries about the weight gain, because I know it all comes with starting this lifestyle.

I am just curious ... Will cycling daily build muscle on top of the fat that was previously muscle, or will it burn all the fat then turn into lean muscle?

So it's been getting pretty cold where I am (I'm studying in Seoul at the moment), especially around my uni campus because it's all just reclaimed land so it's flat with lots of wind. Apparently, there's a lot of snow during the winter too.

I have so much respect for people who trudge through conditions worse than this to keep on with their running/cycling routines, but it's really not practical for me to do that because I'm aiming for a scholarship and I really can't afford to get ill or injured. I've also jumped into running while starting the HCLF vegan lifestyle and my foot's been bothering me a bit, so I've started to stay in the gym on campus for exercise, using the treadmill/ cycling machine/ elliptical.

So, what do you all think about using these machines for cardio? I'm guessing it isn't ideal, but they're what I've got to work with. I know how much Durianrider/Harley advocates cycling, as far as saying that it's way better than running, so I'm going to try to get more into that... but will I get results that are way inferior than getting out there and riding a real bike? There are no real hills here, like I mentioned before, so perhaps the cycling machine would be a better option anyway because I can up the resistance? I don't know... haha. The elliptical also seems to get a lot of bad rap, but it's all from the HIIT/P90X protein powder+pre-workout sellouts so I want to know what you guys think! :)

Thanks for reading the somewhat long post!

It seems like there are a lot of things that go into biking and it is kind of overwhelming. The roads at my house are pretty bad. Some is paved but it's severely torn up with lots of pot holes. I also have dirt and gravel roads behind my house that were built years ago and never used that I'd love to ride down. So I was thinking I need a mountain bike but I'm not sure if that would be the best. Also, I'm about 5'3" and am looking for something on the cheap side as I don't have much to put towards it.

Thanks,

Anna

I'm in the process of debating universities right now, and trying to figure out details (pros/cons) to help make the big decision. My top two out-of-state choices (so, if I can afford them / decide to take out a huge loan) are UC Berkeley and UT Austin, but I'm also considering CU Boulder and UO Eugene and Warren Wilson College (North Carolina). Does anyone / has anyone live(d) in any of these cities? If so, can you tell me a bit about them and how they are and aren't good places to live, especially for a young fruitarian?

For example, how is fruit availability and cost, is the overall cost of living high, are there lots of nature trails, what kinds of things are there to do, is it bike and runner friendly, what kind of people live there, what's the overall vibe, etc.

Valuable information like this is greatly appreciated!

Thank you bunches,

Shannon

I really really really really do not want a car. They're expensive as @#$%^, pollute the environment, and are overall unnecessary. On the other hand, a bike would benefit me in numerous ways- I'd get super fit and strong, it'll be very fun, and it would be an excellent way to help me manage my blood sugars as a type 1 diabetic.

But my parents are dead-set in their believes that I absolutely muuusssttt have and totally need need need a car. Why? Because.... well... I mean.. society says so..? Because everyone has one?

If they get me a car, I will be forced to pay for its gas, cleanings, and insurance, and I won't use it anyway because I will have my bike.

Anything I can show them or anything I can do or say to make it sink in their heads that I do not want a car at all? And if they want to buy me a transportation device, then it could instead just be a bike better suited for long distance than my current one?

It's not that I don't appreciate their offer- I really really do- but it'd be a gigantic waste of money for the both of us since I will more than likely barely, if ever, use it due to my overwhelming preference for bikes.

I have a 53/39 and a 11-23 cassette on my bike (I got the bike used, dont know why the guy I bought it from, who happened to be a pretty big guy, had this combination on it) and I am having trouble on steep hills when I get a ways into a ride. My cadence drops a good amount after a while. I am wondering if it would be good to replace my 39 with a 36. I typed it into a calculator and it seemed like the ratios would work well. Is their any better solution to this problem? Would it be better to replace the cassette with a 11-25? Or should I do both?

I do crits as well and for that reason dont want to get rid of the 53.
