Well since no one really replies to posts here anymore, I just have been digging through the discussion archives in search of answers to my questions, one being of a recent post I did. I have calcium deposits on my ribs and get them around my eyes sometimes. A chiropractor found them on my ribs in a recent xray. He said this was dangerous if it spread to my organs but my problems would be solved if I ingested k2 from Natto. I went and got a good supplement instead, as I wasn't interested in eating super salty Natto. Have yet to get many replies on that thread.

In the meantime...

Was sitting here drinking a 31 date smoothie and munching a big bowl of spinach and wanted to remind myself what the deal is with oxalates. I found this awesome thread:

http://www.30bananasaday.com/profiles/blogs/oxalates

So oxalates inhibit calcium and iron assimilation/absorption... and dates are high in oxalates??I had no idea.

I also was recently prescribed iron my my doctor because my levels were low. This could be what the problem is. I love date smoothies (Dateorade) because I prefer the taste over bananas, and they are easier to keep in the house with roommates than bananas (fruit flies and smell), however now I'm having second thoughts on my daily consumption and main calorie source coming from dateorade.

This is life changing for me to discover this. I never have heard any warnings about consuming dates or that they were high in oxalates. And despite the low activity of this site, I am so grateful for the archived threads still available.

I have one 2000 calorie date smoothie every day for my mid day meal. It consists of 30 raw medjool dates, 4ish cups water (or to desired consistency), less than a cup of almond milk (store bought), and a tiny little bit of natural mint flavor that is alcohol based. I got into this combo over the holidays because it tastes like a candy cane. Is this not good for me though long term? I do it every day right now. I should probably just grow some fresh mint. And the almond milk has the common fillers and a bit of oil, I just like how it gives it a slight creamy taste and then the dateorade doesn't separate, just wondering if using less than a cup really makes a difference in digestion or any other concerns doing this has?

Haven't felt that way in a very long time. I drink plenty of water (1L when I wake up, consistent water throughout the day). Rt4. Exercise at least 45 mins a day (fast steep hill hikes and squats). Carbing up, lots of fresh fruit, vege, cooked high carb low to no salt in the evening. I understand the lifestyle.

But dates just fuck me up. Anyone else recently experienced this? And also, have you found a way to work around it? I'm not the biggest fan of dates anyway (they're delicious but I've never felt great from eating them) but would like to understand this better, I'd like them to still be an option for me, you know?

hello :) I've been visiting this site regularly for a year but somehow just recently signed in. So first a little about me; I've been vegan for about year and half, hclf 6 months and now raw for a week. Last summer I was also raw for a while but didn't eat enough so..

Anyway my problem right now is about dates. I've been eating dates almost everyday for over 6 months now. They are here cheap (if you know where to buy) and easiest way to get enough calories. Bananas come next, but they always take over a week to ripen so I can't have them everyday. I know I should buy more of them and I will when I find someplace to buy in bulk with reasonable price. And other fruits are sooo expensive (organic, at least) like one mango is 1.70€ and I don't know 'bout you but to me that's too much.

Okay so back to the dates ;) Like I said, I've been eating them everyday, about 600g/day (that's one box). The box says 'fresh dates' but I've heard they are still considered as dry fruit. Somedays I eat more, somedays less, depending on what else I have.

So the problem is, is it okay to have dates as a staple? Because I watched some youtube videos about where there was talk about how they don't have water content and are indigestible and etc... But if I drink enough water through day (always at least 3 litres) and even though I've seen how they don't digest so well as other fruits, they might be the only way to keep me raw. Like today I haven't eaten dates, I've had a big green smoothie, 10-12 bananas and 600g of frozen mango chunks, which makes about 1500cal -the same amount as in one box of dates. Of course I will have dinner but I'd like to save my nanas 'cause they're not fully ripe and I don't want to eat just veggies because there's not enough calories obviously.

So I don't think I have a choice. Or is there something else than dates so I could easily get enough energy during day? Bananas of course, but like I said, right now I can't have them because they are still ripening.. Plus, would be nice to eat something else than bananas, frozen mangoes and greens all day everyday ;)

Thanks for reading, I hope I was clear enough and any questions will be happily answered!

My questions arose in the bulk food section of an Asian market where I found some dates and other dried fruit without labels or anyone who could answer my questions as to their contents. My questions to the 30BaD community are as follows: Are there any kinds of non vegan additives that are commonly used which I should watch out for? What about non-raw additives? I know to watch out for sulfur dioxide because of its alleged negative health implications, but I don't really know much beyond that. I most importantly just want to make sure that I'm not risking buying anything non vegan when I buy dates and other dried fruit that isn't labeled. Hope none of this is too repetitive.

Israel continously fails to comply with international laws regarding human rights, and they destroy the plants and thus incomes of many farmers.

As vegans we should really be boycotting Israeli produce, instead of being so carefree with throwing dates into smoothies or snacking on them without any consideration it seems to the harm that such a product is causing not only to humans but by buying it you are promoting the occupation and all the destruction to beautiful plants that comes with it.

I understand this post was a bit of a ramble, and there is a wealth of information available online if you are interested or concerned about this. But if you can. buy dates that are listed as being a product of Palestine. If you can't and yet claim to be a peaceful, loving vegan then you really shouldn't be supporting Hadiklaim and the occupation.

I turned 20 one week ago. Is it possible to mess with your development if you go with low protein levels 4-5 months, do I need to worry about that?I have several liver spots on my body, but I have had a couple of small new liver spots appearing on different parts of my body following this lifestyle, is this normal? Is it a detox reaction, releasing toxins faster than they can be eliminated? Or am I doing something wrong, I'm not weakening my liver am I? Or can it be related to low protein levels? Anyone with similar experience? Also, is it possible to pee out protein/amino acids if you drink too much water? Also :), will having a dental retainer in your mouth (metal wire) hinder detoxification?Thank You, guys and gals on beforehand! :D

So I woke up late yesterday and I had about four pomegranates for breakfast. Then for dinner I started out eating one durian but I was still unsatisfied so I had a pack of dates and I was STILL not satiated so I ate about five potatoes and then I felt full and satisfied but extremely guilty. I woke up this morning and I feel like I ate way too much yesterday and maybe I shouldn't eat as much today to maybe balance out yesterday. I feel like a glutton. Did I eat too much food?

Hey,

Just posted a video about 7 Hot Dates!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7J4bk6YCi8

I would highly recommend the wet-pack Halawy and Honey dates. Khadrawy are pretty good firm or wet-pack, although the wet pack ones are super, super mushy and moist.

The Deglet Noor dates were super super dried out, and the Zahidi were pretty dry as well. Those I got pretty early in the season though, and the dryness may have changed by now. I would just give the farm a call to see what's up.

Check out the video for more if you'd like to.

Thanks and peace,

Vegan Roots

Hey all,

I know this is probably a silly question but I'm new-ish and I've been putting off getting dates because they are so expensive.

But finally I found a way to get 6kg of organic dates for around 50 euro where I live and I was just wondering if this is a good price? And more importantly, how long will they last?

I'm forever buying fruit and then having to throw it out because they get overripe and I'm afraid of spending so much money on dates only to have them dry up or rot. How long do they last?

And is 6kg enough? I don't even know, I'm sorry for all the silly questions! >__<

I'd be looking to have datorade everyday if that helps!

Thank you for anyones help!! x
