Presumably the first documentary on modern veganism.
A documentary on the British vegan society from 1976. Though seemingly quaint and relaxed it covers all the dark issues that veganism confronts.
Though visually and technically dated the message hasn't aged at all and applies even more so to the world today.
Surprisingly enough, originally broadcast on the anti-vegetarian pro-vivisection BBC.

Now available on Youtube in three parts for your repeated watching pleasure.

Please note although the documentary is not even forty years old some of the language is still archaic. When the word pathetic is being used to describe animals it is being used in an older sense of the word meaning something that you should sympathise with as opposed to have contempt for. Even the closest modern internet dictionary I have to hand gives this definition:

PATHETIC |pəˈTHetik|
adjective
1 arousing pity, esp. through vulnerability or sadness: she looked so pathetic that I bent down to comfort her.
• informal miserably inadequate: his test scores in Chemistry were pathetic.
2 archaic relating to the emotions.
DERIVATIVES
pathetically |-(ə)lē|adverb
ORIGIN late 16th cent. (in the sense ‘affecting the emotions’): via late Latin from Greek pathētikos ‘sensitive,’ based on pathos ‘suffering.’

However, I read on facebook this morning that two of my friends have gone vegetarian as a result, and a third friend is thinking about it.

In my larger circle of friends, I am the only vegan and one of three vegetarians. So I find it positive on a practical level that a documentary shown on mainstream television in prime time can exert sufficient influence to change people's minds about eating meat.

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong area. I just wanted to share.

It's a short documentary that shares two wonderful stories about two women who dedicated their lives saving animals.

If you have a chance to see this in 3D I highly recommend it! It's as if you are there playing with the oranutans and elephants!

A little pricey for a 40 minute movie but I thought it was worth it!

Ellen has recently been made aware visually of atrocities going on in the holocaust on animals. She was a "vegetarian" before and would flop over to cheeseburgers, but is now strict vegan. She has just made this change so I know she needs time to morph, however I think Ellen is SO influential (she won 2009 peoples choice award for best talk show), and I believe that she is very honest and has great integrity. I think she will do the "right thing". She has just recently had the author of EATING ANIMALS on her show, so she is going in a good direction. I see Ellen on my hikes here in LA, we go to the same spot. I could introduce myself if she were to recognize my efforts on her forum. But my discussions will need some backup. I have posted discussions on her forum site with suggestions:1. She is still featuring Wolfgang Puck as a chef on her site. He prepares lamb, veal, beef, duck..every other animal too (although the only recipes posted on Ellen of his are vegan, I still dont think she should want to promote him anyway). I have suggested Sarma be featured instead. Please add to my discussion here2. She has a thread on her site to suggest guests. I have suggested the maker of the film EARTHLINGS ("the vegan maker"), Shaun Monson. Please add requests to see him on her show here3. She is part owner of Halo pet foods. Please help me request answers to questions about that issue hereI am so so so grateful to those of you who take your time to assist me, assist all vegans, in this effort. Ellen has such great fame, people love her. She can really make a difference. I really want to get thru to her. If I have a big presence on her website, maybe I can talk to her/meet with her.LOVE

I feel for myself that it is not enough anymore that I just don't eat or use animals. I feel that I can not NOT participate actively in stopping the suffering and lack of compassion from good people, like my sister - she is a "good" person, but she doesnt "care" (in denial). Most people do not search to find the reality of what goes on to produce meat, dairy, eggs, leather, fur, cashmere, wool, cosmetics, new medications or any products tested on imprisoned animals like pet food and drugs and chemicals tested on their skin; cats, bunnies, burning them over and over for weeks. It is gross and unbearable to look at so people don't. But most are good people and would not agree that the atrocities are OK if they would watch documentaries like EARTHLINGS. They really need more of us actively working to show them why to care...which is to ultimately raise compassion/love for all beings/ all children of God. To participate in the suffering of another being is to doom oneself to one's own suffering, we are all connected. We who do know truth can be active to show them how they can reject the lies and hatred and raise their lifestyles up to meet their own moral requirements. They (those in denial) just don't see this truth, they believe that they have nothing to do with condemning humanity to infinate suffering just because animals are tortured for our selfish gain, but that is true because we are all one. People can't be bothered to care about animals suffering because the people themselves are suffering, but they dont think to understand that if they cared to change > to love more > to not project their own suffering on to these poor "lesser beings" then humanity as a whole will rise up in love more and all violence / suffering will become less. Then less. Then less. I think that the next step for a documentary on the animal torturing industries to take is to help the average viewers see that link between compassion for animals and saving himself from more (eternal) suffering. Show that it is not just about animals but also about healing the hate that we project outwardly on to others which comes from AND causes more internal suffering for each of us who do not change. (I know you all don't need this lecture, but it is why I feel I have to do more). I have until now thought that it was enough for me to live my life as a vegan, not eating or using animals. Is that enough? I want to really be effective, I want to really help wake the delusional/in denial masses up....to raise up compassion. Will humanity feel compassion for animals before we feel unconditional love/compassion for our suffering brothers and sisters? Or will it be the other way around?Anyone work for an animal rights non-profit? Which one?Do you get out for protests?Volunteer? Hand out leaflets?I often give money or joined as a donation member to organizations. But now I feel lame just doing that. I know it "helps" but..I have volunteered in phases but then I get too "busy" in my life.I have been to "busy" to go to protests; or to timid for some of them.I don't want to be that anymore, I am praying for the divine inspiration to somehow make animal rights activism my next career and until then volunteer.I have just ordered some "Why Vegan" brochures to pass out on my own time. I'll go to Santa Monica Promenade where the teens and parents are. But do brochures really get thru?Is Peta really guilty of the euthanasia and other things they are charged with?Who of you is really out there actively defending these tortured beings? I can not leave my job yet, but I want to start volunteering with the best organization to perhaps in the future find a job with.
