This also goes for high fiber (insoluble fiber) veggies, greens and fruit. Therefore, in order to have optimal digestion, eat your ripe soft fruits like mango, banana and melon, but blend up your greens so that they are pretty much pre-digested when you drink them and don't cause irritation or pass through your colon undigested leading to pain.

Hi all. Some of you oldies might remember me. I ate lfrv through HS and spent a lot of time on here. I was at the woodstock fruit festival 2012 & 2013. Since I moved out began my own life and now have more responsibilities than ever, I fell off the wagon due to the convenience and ease as well as cheapness of eating cooked food, fast food, etc - you know, all the stuff that makes recent HS graduates gain the freshman 15 (;

Anyways, I've felt myself being drawn back towards fruit really hard lately....as y'all know a fast food sort of lifestyle doesn't make you feel very good so I've borrowed the 801010 book from my parents to reread and am back! For good this time (:

I'm also 6 months pregnant today and even though my boyfriend doesn't eat healthy himself, he has no arguments that a high-produce lifestyle is the healthiest way to go and loves seeing me eating healthier for his son and myself (:

I've been loving eating massive amounts of fruit again, and I feel so good comparatively to a month ago. My big issue this time around is that I just cannot get nearly as much greens as I know I should have in. It was no problem for me last time and I would often have one salad after lunch and another after dinner because I just couldnt wait all the way till dinner for greens, I loved them! Lately I only really want to eat fruit and have to force myself to eat any greens at all. I can only eat about half a head of lettuce worth before I just can't take it anymore.

I have been taking a prenatal called "Rainbow Light Complete Prenatal System; Food-based multivitamin" as well as "Rainbow light Prenatal DHA" (derived from fish oil, yes) for the duration of my pregnancy because I do not want to take any chances with not getting the proper nutrition for my wee baby (: (I settled on this one after some pretty extensive research. its a pretty expensive prenatal but I feel it's worth it; I think it's one of the best) ...so anyway I'm not particularly worried about not getting the minerals that I need from greens, BUT

I know that greens are what drives protien % on this diet from around 5% to closer to 10% and I am somewhat wary of not getting enough protein considering that I'm making a little person inside me, which obviously seems to me I would need more protein to accomplish that I normally would if not pregnant.

Does anybody have any suggestions, or words of wisdom, comfort, or experience for me? If so that would be fabulous.

Anyway it's good to be back! Thanks for reading I know that was incredibly long-winded.

I have been suffering from fairly bad, what seems like, indoor allergies. I dont know exactly what is triggering them. I have an outdoor job. I work as a garden educator. When Im outside I dont seem to have any problems. Every night when I go to sleep I wake up with clogged sinuses. I have tons of mucus, I sneeze, and blow my nose all morning. This is all right when I get up. Later at night when im inside my eyes start to burn and they remain that way until I close them for bed. Ive never experienced these kinds of allergies in my life. Ive been vegan for going on 8 years now. The allergies seemed to have started around when I adopted this diet. I cut out bananas last year because they were giving me perioral dermatitis and now it seems in a trade off, i received new, horrible allergies. I dont think its dehydration as I have to pee all the time and its always clear. I eat a lot of watery foods, and have a lot of water added to all my smoothies. I was thinking that maybe it has to do with a decrease in eating greens and veggies. As a regular vegan I always ate a lot of those but somehow Ive gotten away from that practice with this new diet. I eat a lot of fruit in the morning and then a starchy meal at night. Has anyone else experienced anything similar and have advice they can offer about foods that helped them? Obviously my body seems to be producing way too much histamine.

For example, when it comes to vitamin A, I sometimes get 1000+% of the recommended daily dose, and there are rumours that you can die of vitamin A poisoning, so I wouldn't mind being reassured on that point :)

I also seem to never get enough calcium, sadly (rarely over 50%), same goes for vitamin E and K, and to a lesser extent selenium, iron and sodium. Do I just need to up the greens ? I try to have at least one green veg every day, usually broccoli (whole), spinach (200-300 gr) or lentils (1-2 cups) as well as plenty of salad. Any tips on maxing out these requirements ? They're the only things I need to keep my parents happy, and I'm due for a blood test in december so I want it to all be fine :)

Thank you so much for reading and replying if you can,

Have a nice day,

Charlotte.

I have been thinking about this question for quite long now. So I was wondering is being rawtill4 or raw vegan better for you. Freelee and everyone always says that you should eat a lot of carbs including rice, pasta, potatoes etc. They have a lot of carbs and bring the daily carb intake up. Is it most important to eat a lot of carbs and to focus on that on the rawtill4 lifestyle? Because I wanted to introduce some 100% raw or at least "fruit and greens" days, but I dont know if that doesn't mean that I will be eating less carbs. Greens and some fruits have less carbs but especially greens have less carbs than pasta and rice. So is it technically 'worse' to eat just greens and make a fully raw day or just a fully vegetable and fruit day (can be cooked vegetables like carrots, eggplant etc)?

Eating a lot of greens would mean that I would get less carbs. Would that also mean that I have to eat less because the most important thing is to carbup and eat a lot of carbs for weight loss. So will eating less carbs lead to weight gain?

Im just a bit confused about if its better to eat rawtill4 becasue of all the carbs or to have some raw vegan days as well (especially when you treated yourself to a restaurant meal that was a little more salty and oily than you wanted).

Hi everyone

I'm now 1 month into this lifestyle (half 100% raw, half rawtill4) and I love it.

I'm 32 and my whole life I avoided greens for few reasons, mainly because it takes a while to prepare.

Now that I'm on this lifestyle, I tried them for real, and found out that they make me feel really good. When I eat my fruit meals, I feel fine, mostly 30 minutes later, once my belly is a little less stretched. But I found out that when I eat 1.5 pounds of greens, even though I feel full, it feels so good inside (for some reason). Plus I feel great the next day.

So I thought, I would eat them daily. I went to a wholesaler to buy large amounts of organic romaine hearts.

They package 3 organic romaine hearts and once I wash them and everything, it gives me around 600g of greens, which is perfect for a meal.

The thing though, is that it takes me about 1 hour to wash it. Since I have a tight schedule that makes me skip some days of greens. I then replace them with pastas, but I don't feel as good.

In the romaine packages, there are around 10 alive aphids, and maybe 30 dead ones. This grosses me out. Plus the leaves seems a little greasy.(Maybe aphids residues) :) Once I wash the green leaves with my fingers all around, they are fine, but it's really time-consuming and boring.

I was wondering if:

- People here eat mostly organic greens (For the minerals at the expense of aphids)

- If they wash them as carefully as I am?

- If there are ways to wash them more efficiently and thoroughly

- If there are some other kinds of greens that are easier to wash and as good protein and nutrient wise.

I would be very pleased to cut the wash time in half.

I would like to thank you all for this great community, I almost returned to my old lifestyle a few times mainly because of real bad salts cravings, but there is so much informations and supportive peoples here. I always found what I needed to stay in.

thanks

René

But is that my only other option if I don't want to eat more overts?

Okay, so I know that humans don't need as much protein as most are conditioned to believe, and I understand that a fruitarian diet can be awesome for muscle recovery and endurance athletics, especially since as calories go up protein goes up as well. I completely agree with that.

BUT, I'm a senior in high school at the moment and can't manage to get even eight hours of sleep per night consistently. The average is more like 6-7 hours. I've noticed that it impedes my muscle recovery--whereas my muscles might be fully recovered in just one or two days during the summer, when I get a consistent 9.5 hours of rest, it takes longer, and my muscles feel more dull (and, of course, I feel more tired).

I've read from a handful of sources online (mainly from college research/studies) that, while an adult woman might need about .4 or .5 grams of protein per pound of body weight, competitive athletes need significantly more, anywhere from .6 to .9 grams per pound (some said higher, but those amounts seemed way too high to be reasonable or healthy). At the moment, I usually eat 3000-3500 calories a day (17 year-old female, 5'5'', 20-40 miles per week), and get about 40-50 grams of protein per day.

Today was the cross-country regional race, and although the team qualified for states by getting second place and my time (20:30 5k) wasn't bad considering my previous times (20:17 PR the week before, but the fastest before that was 20:32), I didn't feel great. My leg muscles felt kind of tired. When I race next week for states at FSU, I want to feel AWESOME at the start line and during the race. My goal is to break 20 minutes, so I want to be ready. But it's not possible to get enough sleep and to keep up my grades at the same time. I don't know what to do! That's why I want to ask about this. Could added protein (like 60 or 70 grams a day) be a temporary solution (just for this week)? If so, what kinds of plant foods should I eat for the extra protein? Just more greens? I eat about a large head of iceberg (or the equivalent of romaine or red leaf lettuce) each night, and occasionally some frozen or fresh spinach in a smoothie. Broccoli and cauliflower give me some digestive upset (like gas and bloating), even when I steam them, and I've heard that they are high in oxalates--but do you think that they would help? (Honestly, I have a sensitive digestive system since recovering from an eating disorder.) Do you think that it would be worth it to add some steamed or raw veggies?

Sorry that this got so long! If anyone could clear this up, I would greatly, greatly appreciate it. (-:

          --Shannon

My first question is- I use the Cronometer, and I regularly, probably daily, exceed my requirements of vitamins and minerals without eating any greens. Why then do I need to eat 1-2lbs? I find eating that much weight in greens feels boring on some days, and at other times it even feels like something I'd really rather not do.

(I do eat 1lb daily incidentally, the minimum, because I trust Doug Graham's advice.)

Second- I sometimes feel like half an iceberg lettuce as a snack. I know they are loaded with pesticides, and I've never seen an organic one for sale. I know there's no definitive answer to this question, but I am looking for general guidance- is it healthier to eat the lettuce, and ignore the dose of toxins I just ingested, or is it better to leave it and eat a mango instead? A mango has much less pesticide residue.

Thankyou!

I also try and add in celery - green smoothies and dressings - to help top it up. Never the less according to the cronometer I am using it is still way below the RDI.

Hi everyone,

I'm in so much pain right now. Not only do I have pain on my right shoulder, arm, and breast, but also my entire back now. I feel pain in my right breast when I laugh, sneeze, cough or clear my throat. Sometimes the pain feels like it were in my heart, but I think and hope it's only my breast. :-/ My breasts are feeling generally very heavy, but I have no clue what size they are, I just know their size (cups and all) have increased drastically since going HCRV. All of this scares me. Due to an appointment (non-medical related) that costed me nearly 200€, I'm broke and I had to seek help by my guidance counselor by the vocational school yesterday, as I need to be able to live. I'm not working today and will be going to the doctor today, as I am barely able to move my right arm and bend, let alone work. It is a struggle, as I am the only one that can buy my foods and I desperately need vegan vitamin D.

Is my body simply going through the most painful growing pains as a result of my low bone density and my previous 11-year long anorexia? I'm now 26 years old.

I'm wondering if celeriac could (also) be a cause for my pain because I noticed yesterday and the day before yesterday when I ate my celeriac "rice" salad that my breathing room was very tight, I felt bloated and swollen, including in both of my breasts. Could it be a shock from my body because of the high sodium content of the celeriac? I don't believe the red bell peppers, tomatoes, scallions or herbs have effected me, especially because I eat tomatoes regularly (except in winter) and red bell peppers even more often. I know the lamb's lettuce isn't a cause for my pain as well. There were no other ingredients in the recipe.

^^Such savoury recipes have helped solve my greens problem. But I'm afraid of not being able to eat celeriac. Unfortunately there's leftovers from it and I have a moral dilemma of whether or not to eat it (just to get it over with).

Hot showers, but unfortunately short term. It would be ideal if I had a bathtub and could sleep in it, but that's not possible.

I'm not giving up and I'm continuing to fight as always, but right now is not easy for me.

For the record (to help with any suggestions). I'm allergic to all citrus fruits, kiwi, and pineapple. I've not been able to eat bananas or drink banana smoothies without gagging, BUT I still want to try Esperanza's recipe recommendation with bananas and dates and am so hopeful that it works. I know my massive date consumption may not be optimal, but I do include as much fruits as I can with more vitamin C. I'm hopeful to find a solution that doesn't hurt my finances even more and that I'll be able to eat loads of calories without having to be mostly dependent on dates.

Many thanks in advance. :)

Good day! In regards to the eating of greens, I have a few minor challenges both physically speaking and intellectually/philosophically. I am eating a completely raw diet, in accord with the principles of 80/10/10 and striving always to live the optimal hygienic lifestyle in general. I very much agree with the principles of natural hygiene and 80/10/10 but there is one thing that always seems strange to me. That is the eating of greens and/or vegetables.

We humans are of course frugivores, we love fruit, but I wouldn't say that I love greens in the same way. I feel like if I were to follow my instincts 100 % I would eat fruit rather over greens at any meal. Maybe I would nibble on some shoots every now and then, but my taste preferance and "hunger" would always go towards the sweet and juicy fruit! I know the science shows us that we need to eat greens, but my immidiate reaction to eating greens is always that it taste boring and even unappealing! Sure, I can make a meal out of lettuce alone, but it's not really pleasurable, and if I have to put a mango dressing over the top to make it taste better, this tells me something might not be right about it! The same goes for greens smoothies!

Some points to keep it tidy:

1) Greens taste bland and are not immidiately appealing in the same way as fruit is. Sugar taste's awesome to us and that stimulates us to keep eating until full. I'm not stimulated in the same way by greens.

2) I avoid things like bitter greens and those with a lot of oxalic acid (kale, spinach, many herbs, dandelion, bitter lettuce..) and heavy vegetables(broccoli, cauliflower..) because they taste disgusting to me, therefore I consider them poisonous to a certain degree.

3) It seems, scientifically, that we need to eat greens to cover our mineral needs. Could it be that the soil in which the fruit is grown these days is very poor and therefore we cannot get our minerals from the fruit grown there? If the soil was ideal, would we not be able to eat ONLY fruit? Is the reason for eating greens in a way to "supplement" the diet with plants more concentrated in minerals? To me this would make the most sense, because I cannot seem to find natural urge for greens!

4) I eat greens that are tender and watery/sweet, like romaine lettuce and Iceberg lettuce, but I still find that: A) the outer, darker leaves taste slightly bitter and off-putting to me, and it actually leaves me with a slightly dry and uncomfortable mouth afterwords (?), which makes me ask "why am I eating this"?. and B) that even when I eat the inner heart of the lettuce, the sweet, crispy and watery part, I still find it fairly bland, I wouldn't say it tastes "good" and I would prefer fruit. I'm not saying I wouldn't eat it at all, but to eat the quantity reccomended (3-5% of total calories) I find difficult comprehend from a natural standpoint. I do it now, due to the scientific advice, and thats motivation enough for me now, and I'm not really disputing the idea, I'm just putting forward the philosophical dilemma of: "If I was in nature, and had a choice what would drive me to eat greens?"

5) I know the anthropoid apes eat lots of greens. (I would love more info on the typical primate diet if you know any good resources by the way). Two thoughts come up: A) We are a different species, could it be that the other primates actually love the taste of greens and that it tastes good to them? B) Are they intelligent enough to realize that there's not enough fruit (?) and that it is a survival mechanism to get enough calories? Or could it even be that they recognize the lack of minerals in the fruit grown in depleted soil near humans and supplement with greens? are primates in the deep jungle eating more fruits for example?

6) If I am hungry, I will sit down to eat mangoes for example, I will eat until I'm full. But, if I am to fit greens into my diet, I will have to stop eating mangoes halfway, to keep space for the bland (in comparison espacially of course) greens. I do this out of an intellectual understanding only, not out of instinct, my instinct is to keep eating mangoes! I guess the main question is really this: Natural hygiene (and my natural instincts/intuition/knowledge) teaches that we should eat what is immediately appealing, and eat the food for the food itself and NOT for the nutrients only. What then about greens? I wouldn't choose to eat greens unless I was intellectually convinced! Also, they dont supply enough calories at the meal, so eaten alone I would still be hungry for sugar!

A lot of questions I know, but its been on my mind a long time, and if you are able to answer, even to only some of them, I would greatly appreciate it, I am sure there are more people thinking the same thing!

I made a savory salad last night with romaine lettuce with fresh parsley, red bell peppers and scallions and LOVED it! I loved it so much that I'm going to make it again today for dinner, only this time I'm going to try it with lamb's lettuce instead of romaine and with dill instead of parsley, I'm excited to see how it goes. :) Only one thing that's a bit annoying is that it's hard to get rid of the way my breath smells from the scallions, lol. :D I'd be thankful for any tips. ;)

The other thing that makes me happy is this being my third day of not having any more muscle pain and I haven't even ordered my vitamin-D or my figs yet. :) I still want to order them though. And regarding my rehabilitation-sport, I'm still going to make an appointment there, so that I can start.

After almost two years of bouncing back and forth between 811 and McDougall-like cooked vegan, my husband and I went 100% 811 on January 6th. We feel that our transition is now complete and are planning on staying HCRV indefinitely.

This time, however, I'm experiencing detox in ways I have never experienced before, which is interesting because I don't feel that I'm doing anything differently this time (well, except I'm now eating 2500+ calories consistently, whereas the last three times we went 100%, I was not eating enough fruit).

I'm familiar with detox, and I understand the importance of letting it do its detox-y thing (so I'm trying my best to ignore the monstrous zits I've got on my forehead, even though I've never had zits before, lol!). But one issue I'm wondering if I should address is regarding my consumption of greens. I love my salads. Like, I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. After consuming two giant smoothies in the day time, all I can think about is how absolutely delicious that savory salad is going to taste.

Lately, however, eating these salads is not feeling good...at all. It's definitely a difficult feeling to describe. It started with little miniature sweet peppers...I would eat them and feel like they were just sitting in my throat and stomach...not digesting. And then it was baby spinach...same feeling. At lunch today, I ate organic romaine hearts...same thing. And then tonight when I ate my evening salad, it was almost as if I could taste the sulfur in the greens (organic spring mix) and even in my zucchini noodles! And I just didn't feel good.

Now, there's some other stuff that could be at play here:

1) I've had acid reflux all my life, since I was a baby. It's mostly postural (acid and stomach contents come up into my esophagus when I lay down), so previous doc's and my chiropractor think it's due to an esophageal hernia, but I've never been scoped, so not 100% sure. Anyway, we eat dinner kind of late, usually around 8pm, and I go to bed around 10pm, so I get horrible reflux usually all night long. Maybe this is why my body seems to be rebelling against greens...?

2) There's a lot of stomach viruses going around the area where I live, and I work with pregnant women and their children, so I'm exposed almost every day. I've managed to avoid it, but maybe my body is trying to fight a virus and therefore isn't able to digest greens and non-sweet fruits (zucchini) right now?

3) Could detox be responsible for this?

I guess my main question is...does anyone have experience with not being able to digest greens really well, and if so, what did you do about it? I've been playing around with the idea of going on mono-fruit island for a month to see if my digestive tract needs some time to heal. But I'm breastfeeding my one-year-old (also raw vegan) baby and am honestly a little worried that she wouldn't get all the essential fatty acids that she needs if I cut greens out of my diet.

I don't like not feeling well, though. And lately, my delicious salads are making me not feel well. That's a bummer. Help, please?

Thanks so much!
