Hey guys! :)So I'm looking at booking a trip to Hawaii (specifically Kauai). I have no interested in the touristy side of things - just really want to experience the island as the locals do! Does anyone know what fruit is like over there? I imagine it would be amazing! But as for prices?! Despite news reports that Oregon’s Measure 92 to label GMO foods was defeated on Tuesday, the official word from the YES on 92 campaign is: It’s not over.

As of this morning, Measure 92 is trailing 49.66 percent to 50.3 percent, with votes still being counted in two favorable counties, Lane and Multnomah. The campaign says it will likely be Friday before all of those votes are counted and results are final.

Whichever way it goes, Monsanto and Big Food outspent us in Oregon by more than 2 to 1, dumping a record-shattering $20 million into TV, radio and print ads, and direct mail, to run yet another campaign of twisted truths and outright lies.

The Gene and Junk Food Giants also spent big in Colorado—more than $17 million—to defeat Colorado’s Proposition 105 this week, another citizens’ initiative to label GMOs.

Conservative estimates put the total spent by the likes of Monsanto and Pepsi to defeat GMO labeling laws, so far, at about $105 million. That number doesn’t include the record millions spent lobbying lawmakers. Or the millions spent trying (unsuccessfully) to prevent Vermont from passing a GMO labeling law.

What the pesticide and junk food companies won’t spend. Just to hide the genetically engineered, pesticide-laden “foods” they’re feeding you.

GMO labeling wasn’t the only anti-GMO issue on the ballot this election. The anti-GMO movement won two key battles this week—clear signs that we are making headway.

Voters in Maui County (Hawaii), passed a moratorium on the growing of GMO crops, despite an $8-million campaign waged by the biotech industry to try to stop them. Sources say a lawsuit by industry is inevitable, just as it was in Vermont.

In Humboldt County, Calif., voters passed a law making it illegal "to propagate, cultivate, raise or grow any organism (or its offspring) whose DNA has been altered by genetic engineering.”

The loss in Colorado is disappointing. But not debilitating.

And whatever the final outcome in Oregon, this movement is very much alive. We are nothing if not patient and determined.

I'm preparing to move from Oahu to Los Angeles to figure out health issues. I'm wondering if there are any meetups/hangouts/anything with you frooty people in that area. I'm hoping to make it to Happy Healthy Vegan's potluck on the 18th, but I might not be in town by then. This will be interesting for me, as I have an abundance of vegan friends out here, and zero in L.A., but we'll see where the universe takes me. I also don't have a car anymore (used to get panic attacks driving!), so a trip to the produce terminal may not happen for a while. Any shopping tips, meetups, anything closer to Santa Monica than HHV's potluck?

Hi. I am currently staying in oahu for the next month. I am 13 but I have never really met any other raw vegans or many vegans for that matter, so I'd love too meet some raw till 4 or raw vegans!

but mostly this is about haiku stairs (aka stairway to heaven) I saw some pictures of it on instagram and ohmygosh WOW. then I got to hawaii and looked into it more and found out its illegal.. but my mom still is cool to go there. yay.

so, I was wondering if there were any vegs out there who had been on it and maybe would consider going with us ( me and my mother) .. or if there was someone who has heard about is and was just interested in going on it and would maybe go with us!

I've been keeping a worktrader at my place in the jungles of the big island, but I need to change that up and find someone who can help me with the kiddos at times.

This probably works out to about 3 to 4 hours a day a few days a week, along with some expectation to help out around the place generally. All together 20 hours in exchange for your own private room in our awesome off-grid home and full access to all of our amenities.

We're only about a mile straight line away from the ocean, in an off-grid, natural lifestyle subdivision. The 3-acre property is private and includes some bananas, lilikoi, avocados, mountain apple, citrus, coconuts, papaya, and other edibles.

My ideal person would be patient and empathetic, great with kids (obviously), into a fruit-based raw foods lifestyle (kids are vegan/raw, I'm plenty tolerant though we won't have any non-vegan foods here). Hopefully you'll become a part of the family and we'll all benefit from the experience.

As a freelance software developer I am planning to move there later this year. I was wondering if anyone could comment on the price of organic fruit on any of the islands? I know that Oahu and Maui have Whole Foods stores.. but I am not sure if they supply any local produce or whether their prices are any different from the mainland. Anything organic other than bananas tends to be pretty expensive here. Is it more/less expensive there or about the same? Thanks for any info!

San Fransisco Fruities, Help! 12 hour lay over, landing after 9, when stores close!

So I just booked my flight for Hawaii, just under 500 bucks, great price! Unfortunately I got a 12 hour lay over in San Fransisco, and I'll be landing a little after 9pm on May 11th (saturday), so I won't even be able to go out and get myself some fruit from the stores because most things will be closed. Unless anyone knows of places that will be open? I'm wondering if anyone out there would be willing to help me out and bring me a bunch of ripe fruit. Vacation to non-touristy Hawaii!

Hi all!My family & I are considering taking a vacation to Hawaii this coming March. However, we don't really want to go to the touristy/commercialized areas so much, and we're not looking to stay at a fancy resort of any kind. We'd much prefer to experience the actual culture there and such.But - we don't travel a whole lot, none of us have ever been to Hawaii and none of us know anybody in Hawaii, so we have no idea where to even start looking!Can anybody who's been to Hawaii/lives there help us out? That would be awesome.Vacation duration would probably be about 2 weeks.We're thinking of hopefully either renting a simple little cottage - electricity and all that stuff totally optional, or maybe camping in a tent.We wouldn't want to have a car, we'd probably rent bicycles, so it would be nice if there were a town (or somewhere to get provisions, such as fruit) within a 20-30 min bike ride.I can't think of any other details to include, but any guidance from those more experienced than us would be greatly appreciated!Thanks (:

Alright I am looking at heading over in March or April for a couple months. I just purchased my woofing subscription but can't decide which island I want to be on. Does anyone have experience with a particular location that I can get sufficient fruit to fill my belly day after day as well as great nature paths close by I can spend my time off exploring? What fruits are available during those months or does it vary on the island and elevation? =)

Trying to find people for fruitarian house share in Puna, Hawaii

I'm currently living in Hilo, but I'm hoping to make my way back to Puna pretty soon, and it would be amazing to share a house with other fruit lovers. I'd like to get 3 or 4 people (including myself) so that the rent would be nice and low, maybe around $200 each. Ideally this place would be close to a bus stop so everyone could get into town for fruit, or if someone had a vehicle we could all share in the costs of going into town for fruit shopping.

Anyone interested? It will be another month or so before I can leave this place since I need to give notice, so I just want to see if I can get some people together.

Want to intern on an awesome organic fruit farm in tropical Hawaii?

We are accepting a limited number of interns during the December to March period at present. An internship is for a period of 6 weeks.

Our farm has a large greenhouse as well as over 400 fruit trees including bananas, avocados, jaboticaba, durian, oranges, jackfruit, papaya, star fruit, abiu, mammay sapote etc. to name some. The work exchange expectation is a minimum of 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. Our interns often want to work longer than just two hours and thats ok too!

As an intern you'll learn about growing and harvesting tropical fruit (our natural food), and greens in our greenhouse. Other farm activities include construction, maintenance of equipment, hacking the jungle with a machete, planting, weeding and mulching, etc. We intend that Interns participate and learn about a variety of different aspects of organically caring for the land and trees, etc. We'll also have a bunch of fun!

As you'd expect in an 811 community we are tobacco, drug and alcohol free, we welcome interns who also live a clean lifestyle.

We are a low fat raw vegan community situated in the jungle of Puna on the Big Island. We welcome interns who are interested in participating in our LFRV lifestyle and are willing to consume only beautiful raw tropical fruits and vegetables in our community. It's the ideal 811 environment!

We will consider shorter guest stays also, where you can also participate in farm activities but are not required to if you don't wish to, please email with details of your requirements.

Accommodation is shared basic farm accommodation, some camping and a shared communal kitchen and showers. Wifi internet is available for a small weekly charge.

There are many fun outdoor things to do in your spare time like exploring Volcano National Park (can be reached by bicycle and a bus, hiking, surfing, swimming in lots of different fun places, snorkeling, camping etc.

We speak english and from time to time, some french.

We can be reached by bus from Hilo (1 1/2 hours bus ride) then either a half hour walk, or 10 min bike ride from the bus stop.
