Most non-vegans I talk to have a hard time understanding why being vegan is so important (in regards to building relationships), so here's seven quick comparisons (in no particular order) I'd use to make them understand my position (feel free to add more!):

1. It's like being in a relationship with a smoker (as a non-smoker)

You're essentially dating a person whose bad habit is not only detrimental to themselves, but leaves them with a terrible odor and taste.

2. It's like being in a relationship with a racist

You're dating someone who'd prejudice others based on not being the same as them (human), who condones wholesale slaughter and mutilation of innocent beings simply because they're not perceived to be similar to themselves.

3. It's like being in a relationship with someone who supports big oil and other dirty industries (as an environmentalist)

You're dating someone who's either willfully ignorant about the environmental damage they are causing through the industry they choose to support, or simply does not care about such an important issue as the future of our world.

4. It's like being in a relationship with someone who wouldn't give a damn about your children

You're dating someone who, in almost every way, would rob their own child. They might teach a child that it's ok to eat animals, thereby effectively perverting their view of and relationship to nature. At the same time, teaching your child to consume animals is probably the single greatest abuse that can be wrought upon a child's health, as it will increase their risk of getting almost all the worst diseases you can recall off the top of your head (and probably more.) Lastly there's the emotional abuse your partner exposes your child to by being almost guaranteed to either dying slowly, painfully, too soon or all of the above.

5. It's like being in a relationship with someone who's slowly killing themselves through substance abuse

Whether it be through doing crack, or eating a meaty snack, you'd be in a relationship with someone whose slow health decline will be a detriment to the quality and experience of your life, solely caused by their bad choice. Watching someone die from their addiction is something nobody should experience.

6. It's like being in a relationship with a Wallstreet banker (As an Occupy Wallstreet protester)

This point is to show how diametrically opposed the views are of a non-vegan and a vegan. If you can't even agree on whether or not it's ok to consciously kill, cause suffering to or in other ways abuse other beings for your own pleasure, it's hard to find common ground. In my opinion this difference in views is almost as great as it gets.

7. It's like being in a relationship with a schizophrenic psychopath

One minute they love animals, the next they're loving the taste of animals. It's quite disturbing.

I lOVE my veggies so, the fruit thing is really a challenge just because I never had much of a sweet tooth. I was wondering about carrots or jicama for example. Help!
