I decided it is time to bin all the chemicals in the bathroom. I'd like to get my hair used to not using shampoo and don't want to do any more dying etc.
I made sure to have apple cider vinegar, baking soda at home and also bought a bottle of dr bronners ("Dr. Bronner - 'S Magic Soaps Pure-Castile Soap, 18-In-1 Hemp Unscented Baby Mild").

Using shampoo and conditioner, my hair is in "ok" condition but not awesome: I used to dye it, until 3 or 4 months ago, I used to have psoriasis on my scalp and our water here has lots of limescale in it. (We are not able to purchase a filter system atm.)

Since the last time I dyed my hair it got greesy very fast, I have to wash it every two days. On top of that about 2 months ago (I was already low fat raw vegan then) I started getting little spots on my scalp and my scalp feels very sensitive. These reasons and that I don't want to use any products from companies that test on animals are why I need a change.

My first experiment:

Last night I used a small amount of dr. bronner's soap on my hair.

The problem:

My hair immediately started to feel kind of sticky. I tried to wash it all out and used apple cider vinegar as conditioner. I did not wash it out. My hair was in horrible condition, even after it was dry it was still sticky and oily and weird.

2nd attempt:

I went back to the bathroom, washed it with watered down Dr. Bronner's and conditioned it with very very much watered down apple cider vinegar which I rinsed afterwards.

2nd bad result:

The hair was slightly less oily but still rubbbery and once it was dry, I looked like a scarecrow :)) the hair stood in all directions and it felt really really bad.

3rd attempt and giving up:

I gave my hair a night's rest and this morning I tried watered down baking soda but hair still felt sticky, so I decided to use shampoo and conditioner this time. I must say, I was a bit scared to ruin my hair at this point. After using the conditioner I put watered down apple cider vinegar over the hair and washed it out. This was to test if the apple cider vinegar is causing any issue. My hair is "fine" now.

So now I really need some advice. I am in the UK and couldnt find a source for Tate's products. Also I would prefer to go shampoo-free if that is even possible in a hard water environment without filter.

Did I buy the wrong dr. bronner's product? Is it bad for hair after all? Can I be shampoo free although my hair was previously treated and although our water is hard?

Hi everyone,

where can I begin? This whole week I lost my voice and in the beginning had also a sore throat (hurt to swallow even though I drank sooo much water and ate like I usually do, except I would've loved to have eaten ore greens!), sniffles, sinus-infection (coughing, throat clearing, and occasionally coughing up phlegm).

I handled those problems with drops of eucalyptus- and pinetree-oils, which helped the sore throat tremendously, but has opened up my sinuses significantly, and I have been blowing my nose

I just donated blood for the first time and am undescribably happy with how "super" the doctor said my levels are and that I'm appropriate to donate blood (even if only for full blood and not plasma / better than nothing!). I also managed to hide my sniffles. But now I realise I definitely have just hayfever now, although every now and then my voice becomes scratchy, but usually goes away with water drinking. My ears are stuffed too, but my main problem is hayfever. I'm always having to blow my nose and rub my eyes.

I've also had constipation too, despite how much I eat and drink!

I still use shampoo, conditioner, face cream, and deoderant (all vegan), but I want to soon free myself from them. I almost did that for this summer holiday, which I'm still on, but was a dumb coward and ended up postponing it due to my loving yet SAD best friend. I talked with her about how great lots of people are doing poo-free, but she was grossed out at the idea and spoke only negatively about that.

^^I mention that because I read an old thread that say parfums can cause hayfever.

Regardless, I am 100 % 811-lfrv for 2 months (officially tomorrow) with no slip-ups or bad cravings whatsoever, drinking often 3-4 liters of water, eating over 3500 calories daily, no overts, no oils, no salt, or anything nasty like that. Only mono-meals of fruits and greens.

Do you know of any good vegan remedies against hayfever??? I would take something that I could use externally, but when orally ONLY when it neither messes up 811 nor goes against 811.

I am grateflu for any help!

Many thanks in advance!

Im doing my second attempt with going no poo. first time I tried it I simply rinsed my hair with water, and it was a disaster ! my hair got so greasy from it that I didn't feel like leaving my apartment. and it wasn't even dirty beforehand !

so now I wanted to try out the baking soda-approach, hoping for a more gradual transition. - I don't mind my hair being a little greasy during this phase, but I don't want people to think that Im insanitary either ;)

SO today was my first day. It has been 5days since my last hair wash, although normally Ill wait 7-8 days in between washing. I wanted to break the wash-cycle a little early so that the risk of my hair turning out like last time, would be smaller.

step1 - I mixed 3tbs of baking soda w 150ml of water.

step2 - after rinsing my hair in warm water for a couple of minutes, I put the mixture in my hair and massaged it in for another cpl of minutes, and then I rinsed it out completely.

step3 - panic ? I must say that my hair feels really thick and unmanageable ! It hasn't dried yet, so idk how it will turn out, but experience tells me that when it feels like this wet, it wont improve much in its dry state.

what do you say ? do you think that I need to just stick it out, and maybe wash it everyday for a while w the baking soda until my hair adjusts ? or should I try adding lemon to the mixture maybe ? Im open to any suggestions and/or stories of experience

thanks fruities !

Hello all,

My name is Maor and I would like to discuss the no-shampoo issue, which I have been reading about extensively lately. A short introduction: In my highschool years I suffered from exhaustion and used to skip showers every now and then, and I ultimately learned from experience that there was no harm in abstinence from body soap and stopped using it altogether. Naturally, I began to doubt the need for shampoo, but when my hair became greasy after a short no-shampoo period I gave up. I have come across information on the subject lately and would be glad if you can help me sort things out:

1. Some of the no-shampoo adherents wash their hair with baking soda and vinegar. In my eyes this is effectively substituting one unnatural substance with another one, and the option of water-rinsing only appeals to me more. Is it actually preferrable?

2. If I use water only, I understand that I would need to scrub the scalp from time to time. What is the frequency?

3. I have read about the transition period, when the scalp becomes extra greasy. Is there a way to relieve this condition?

Many thanks,

Maor.

This morning I decided to 'bite the bullet' and not wash with water as I figure that if i did that with my dogs I would expect the oil balance to be affected.

Although I use all vegan products, I've been pushing around the idea of ending the use of shampoo and other products like lotion, deodorant, etc...however, I have some questions.

Is it too early for me to transition? Although I went LFRV last spring/summer, I've had cooked food since then and have only been 100% raw for the past month. Although I'm doing great I think that choosing to go product free may give me incentive to keep it up...although this isn't the only reason for me doing so. In addition, I'm nearing the end of a bottle of shampoo and would like to stop shampoo after I finish the current bottle, since it takes me forever to go through a bottle of shampoo.

I run daily. Will I be able to wash my hair, with water, everyday? Do you scrub your scalp? How often?

Although I'd like to go cold turkey, what are your experiences like? Do you recommend baking soda/lemon juice? And if so, how often?

Do you ever blow dry?

As for other personal products such as deodorant, lotion, or lip balm...I personally think I can drop the deodorant. After transitioning to vegan options I've found that they aren't the best at covering up smell anyway, so it won't be a loss.

My biggest concern is lotion/lip balm. I live in Ohio (cold climate, especially in the winter months). It's an ongoing battle with dry skin, even with lotion. What do you use? I've seen others use coconut oil. Although I'd love to get away from any products, I'm looking for any ideas to point me in a better direction.

Any other input would be greatly appreciated!
