Are organic foods healthier, and therefore worth the extra expense? The scientific debate over this issue has raged on for many years now. I believe the answer is clear-cut, at least if you believe that toxic chemicals have the capacity to harm your health...

Two years ago, meta-analysis by Stanford University received widespread media coverage, and with few exceptions, conventional media outlets used it to cast doubt on the value of an organic diet.

This despite the fact that the analysis—which looked at 240 studies comparing organically and conventionally grown food—found that organic foods are less contaminated with agricultural chemicals. In an effort to further clarify the 2012 findings, a group of European scientists evaluated an even greater number of studies, 343 in all, published over the last several decades.

Organic Foods Have Higher Levels of Important Antioxidants

Just like the Stanford study, the new analysis also found that while conventional and organic vegetables oftentimes offer similar levels of many nutrients, organic foods have fewer pesticide residues. They also have on average 48 percent lower levels of cadmium, a toxic metal and a known carcinogen—a clear bonus, if you ask me.

One key nutritional difference between conventional and organics however, is their antioxidant content. According to the featured findings, organic fruits and vegetables can contain anywhere from 18-69 percent more antioxidants than conventionally-grown varieties. According to the authors:

“Many of these compounds have previously been linked to a reduced risk of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative diseases and certain cancers, in dietary intervention and epidemiological studies.

Additionally, the frequency of occurrence of pesticide residues was found to be four times higher in conventional crops... Significant differences were also detected for some other (e.g. minerals and vitamins) compounds.”

[More here...]
http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_30585.cfm

I was spending a lot of time at a friend's home who I knew to use natural cleaning products. Her house had a really yucky toxic smell that I just couldn't put my finger on. After a few visits, it clicked, it was her cat litter. She kept her cat litter in the basement yet her whole house smelled like it and my clothing wreaked when I got home, the family would say I smelled perfumey. BTW she keeps a beautiful sparkling clean home, cleans the litter regularly. So I looked up cat litter's toxicity and what the alternatives are. It turns out that it is deadly stuff and off gases everywhere, (obviously), bad for people, bad for the animals. See below:

Kitty Litter

The two ingredients that make the [cat] litters toxic are crystalline silica & sodium bentonite. Clay-based cat litters contain crystalline silica, the main component in sand, rock and mineral ores. A possible health threat from clay-based litters is posed by silica dust, which can be kicked up and breathed in by both cats and humans. Prolonged exposure to silica dust causes silicosis, a cancerous & fatal lung disease. Silicosis creates inflammation and scar tissue formation in the lungs, reducing the body’s ability to extract oxygen from the lungs. As the disease progresses, pulmonary and cardiac impairment may occur to the point where oxygen must be supplied continuously to sustain life. Once silicosis has developed there is no cure for the disease; however, silicosis is preventable if one can reduce silica dust exposure. Although exposure to this dust is of great concern, the effects on cat owners exposed while cleaning their cat's litter box are virtually unknown."
Continue reading on Examiner.com Toxic cat litter - Newark pet care | Examiner.com http://www.examiner.com/pet-care-in-newark/toxic-cat-litter#ixzz1fx...

Of course there are also lots of chemical additives similar to toxic laundry detergents and perfumes.

hey guys,

sooo is cashew safe to eat? is it natural to eat?

It seems to me like cashews should be treated almost like cacao. Firstly, it is very difficult to buy truly raw cashews. Secondly, the true fruit of the cashew tree is a kidney shaped seed that grows at the end of the fruit which is the cashew. The seed develops first on the tree, and then expands into the cashew apple. The seed is surrounded by a double shell containing an allergenic phenolic resin, anacardic acid, a potent skin irritant chemically related to the more well known allergenic oil urushiol which is also a toxin found in the related poison ivy. Some people are allergic to cashew nuts, but cashews are a less frequent allergen than other nuts.

I love cashews although i do not eat them often. I will also admit i like the taste of cacao but i try to stay away from that as best i can coz i get ance problems several days later from eating it.

But the fruit of these two seem to be safe but not the nuts/seeds...so i seem to understand the reason for cacao but what about cashews everyone...what do you think?

I'm sure my instinct in this realm is cut off. But I don't understand how humans ever knew (without scientific analysis) what parts of plants not to eat?For many years RV I have eaten the whole romaine, milky white core and all. Is that toxic?I have thrown the celery leaves into my salads. Are they toxic?I have crunched down on grapefruit or orange seeds and just swallowed the whole thing, outer shell and all. Toxic.I have juiced many whole veggies, all toxic bits in tow.But how would anyone know not to eat these parts without science? And where is the online list or what clues to use now to know what part of any given fruit or veg we should avoid?Oh, and do we need to cut out brown spots form nanners? I have been told that sometimes flys inject larvae into a nanner and that will make it brown as well as natural ripening. That freaks me out. Do I have to inspect every brown spot?
