Greetings! Back from a long hiatus.

I've gone raw vegan every year for 1-3 months at a stretch for the last 16 years (I just turned 33), but 2021 is the first year I'll do it in the tropics! I live in Seattle, grew up in Alaska, and raw vegan and LFRV in sub-freezing weather is freaking *rough*, but I've done it anyway. I'm working remotely for a month and a half to two months at some family property in Hawaii, and have been eating tons of fresh local fruit and leaves already!

My question is this: How do our bodies adapt to the tropics, either in the context of LFRV or not, over the course of months or years? Do we retain water? Lose it? Does our fat storage change?

As a Pacific Northwesterner who climbs, hikes, mountaineers and is generally in cold damp dark weather half the year or more, I feel like a muscular physique to generate heat with a little bit of body fat for added warmth/reserve suits that climate well (I'm pretty lean and muscular, with a butt from all the steep climbing and hiking). But how do athletic bodies shape themselves in the tropics?

All I could find so far has been very old British colonial-era research papers from the 20's and 50's, but the papers have been behind paywalls. Yikes.

Thanks for reading, and any insight is greatly appreciated!

I'd like to get 3 or 4 people (including myself) so that the rent would be nice and low, maybe around $200 each. Ideally this place would be close to a bus stop so everyone could get into town for fruit, or if someone had a vehicle we could all share in the costs of going into town for fruit shopping.

Anyone interested?
-Ralph Nader

An issue close to my heart is closing the SOA (School Of The Americas) because the military is forcing these citizens of Latin America to allow corporations to destroy their land and water for short term profits. Many people realize that indigenous rights are closely linked with environmental sustainability issues.

The elections are over and however you feel about them, one thing is certain: changing the bipartisan U.S. foreign policy towards Latin America and pushing back militarization is a long-term project and it depend on pressure from the grassroots. We need to mobilize and build mass movements that get people in the streets. We need your support to make it happen. As a thank you, we will send you a copy of the map of U.S. Intervention in Latin America and the Caribbean (see below).

The 2012 November Vigil is taking place in 9 days, from November 16-18. It is our chance to set the agenda for justice right from the start (no honeymoon this time around!). Let's remind President Obama and the powers that be that we will not stop, that we are winning, and that they have another opportunity to join the right side of history! (Many groups are still making their travel and lodging plans: get connected!) We will be their in our thousands demanding that the Obama administration close the SOA/WHINSEC and begin new relationships with Latin America. If you have stood vigil at the gates of Fort Benning before, now is the time to mobilize others in your community to join you. If you have never come to the November Vigil before; this is the year! Make history and be part of the largest annual anti-militarization convergence in North America. Come take a stand for justice, peace, dignity and self-determination.

With about $6 billion dollars, the elections were the most expensive elections in history and they diverted attention and money to various candidates and political parties... as a result, we need your financial contribution now to help cover the cost for the stage and sound equipment, for the rental of the Columbus Convention Center for the November convergence, to set up a media office, and more. Click here to make a donation. If you pitch in $15 or more, we will send you a copy of the U.S. Intervention map as a thank you for your donation.

Thank you!!
http://SOAW.org/

The design team of ILC.iNK created an extraordinary bilingual and union-printed map of U.S. interventions in Latin America and the Caribbean. It lists the Republicans and Democrats who were U.S. presidents at the time of the interventions, which makes it a great educational tool and reminder following the re-election on President Barack Obama; to create real change in the bi-partisan U.S. foreign policy towards Latin America, it'll take more than elections but the kind of hard and persistent grassroots organizing that has brought the victories that we are seeing in Latin America.

Click here to receive your copy of the map of U.S. Interventions in Latin America and the Caribbean as a thank you gift for your donation.

Hey, after seeing that soooo many ppl are heading to ASIA this year and coming year 2011 I thought I give you some hints or more of an invitation to join the beauty this place offers...

So far I've settled in Trang best city in the South IMHO. Why??

Here some major points:

a) Fruit is abundant with both morning, day and night markets offering a wide, wide, wide range of selection:

Watermelon for 10-13 bht a kilo (1/2$)
Bananas for 20-40 depending on variety and ripeness
Maprao or Coconut for 13 bht each
Nandok Mai Mango for 60-65 bht kilo (could drop as season comes in)
Jackfruit for 25 bht a plate (aprox 7-8 pieces)
Papayas for aprox 30 bht each piece (aprox 1,5kg)
Other exotic fruit as Dragonfruit, Mangosteens, Snakefruit and such also available....
Orange Juice for 25 bht 1/2 liter

All fruit is available ripe, good quality and here we come:

b) you have not the Farang and Local Price as in other places of Thailand: both farang and local , pay same wage (you can even barther if you buy more and are friendly...

c) Trang has some very good infrastructure, the place, city and region is wealthy due to rubber industry... that means again:

- you have good exercising facilities : a stadium for jogging, running, football/soccer, volleyball, basketball, heavy and lighter weightlifting, pull and push ups bars and such all in open space just very central... for free!

d) Trang is small and exotic... that means not much pollution and not many white ppl that stay over long period... this makes it a very EXOTIC experience... moreover you are welcomed cause they are happy to actually see and have you here.

e) Accomodation and Living Costs are damn cheap: You can live at PJ Guesthouse or rent an appartment (bit harder but possible) paying like 100/150 bht each night or less. Single Room with separated bath at PJ 150 very friendly and good english speaking. If you rent appartment you may find one with bath included. With another 200-300 baht you can eat a lot of fruit! I know some of you may spend even more of that im just talkn for ppl who may be on a budget. oh forgot... Internet at the Library HiSpeed: 15 Bht - stay as much you want... Massage (long story could write another thread) for 120 bht. Make sure to steer away from Trang Hotel cause they are naughty :)) We had to defend ourselves from some serious advances... period.

f) The Islands are close if you get tired of the city... Krabi is just 2 hours north if your into climbing or island hopping. Malaysia 4 visa renewal another 4-6 hour south. So its good strategic position...

g) Trang has good connection to Bangkok via flights: check out: NOKAIR.COM or come with an overnight train (best option) from Bangkok choose Sleeping wagon for around 600 baht and you can sleep your way like a child!! In the morning you wake up and youll seeing greenery and nice scenario and around 10am your in Trang Train station (PJ Guesthouse is around the corner, great for beginning)

h) Im Here the F___K !! Ryno and another Danish guy are now Island Hopping up north they may return in some days/weeks/months (i hope lol)... So far I've rented an appartment and have settled here. I have all I need and Im working on a few ebooks and music recordings so dont stress me out to much please (jokes) Im happy to have occasional ppl around me otherwise Im starting to speak to myself like a lunatic. (not really lol)

j) Theres great waterfalls, forests, and .... Herbal Steam/Bath Saunas for 40 bht... so theres always something to do really!

k) Theres nice buddhist temples for those interested. Though its south its not thaat muslim so its nice balance and both go along well (seems like)

I think thats it mostly , if your wanting to come to Thailand and your headn down south give me bang and join the farang in the land of trang ! :))

This is my phone number if that makes it easier too:

08 2422 0248

ps. will see to upload some pics soon

pps. sorry for grammar mistakes ive written in a rush

Hey everyone,I was just wondering if anyone knew about greens that grow in tropical climates. I know that lettuce and kale can grow in the tropics, but I am more interested in what edible (raw) greens grow naturally there, what greens have successfully been cultivated, and if anyone knows, what greens non-human primates eat in their natural environment. Thanks!
