Fresh Durian in Canada?

Hi everyone, I have never eaten Durian, I live in Ottawa, Canada. Living 80/10/10 is frustrating when you live here... i watch all these videos of the rest of you going for run's and bike rides on the beach. I would like to say I am happy for you, but I am so jealous. I want to lay in warm grass... or live near a banana tree.. i cannot even imagine how happy that would be...

anyway sorry for rant, what I want to ask, is it possible to get fresh durian in Canada? I went to an Asian supermarket and bought one... well.. i was told it was fresh.. and it cost WAY more then the frozen ones..

But the more i research durian the more it feels like it is not EVEN POSSIBLE it could be fresh.. so.. why did they rip me off so bad? it was 30 bucks for this one fruit! now im frightened to open it.. what if it isnt ripe? what if.. bahhhh.... 

(Side note: I have had it two days now, and the smell is increasing, and i think some of the green is turning to a more brownish..)

I will include a pic!

If anyone can offer some help or suggestions I would be so so sooooo very grateful.

    Hello,

    I'm also Canadian right close to Ottawa (Gatineau), good luck finding Durian fruit.

    So far the best fruit market I've discovered is Whole Produce close to Carling and Maitland.

    They have a good variety of tropical fruit and tasty. I've recently spotted jackfruit at the

    loblaws on Elgin at $10.00 and there was only 1, not sure how fresh it was.

      Hi Mirella! thanks for joining conversation! My cats live in gatineau ehehe ehehhehe ... they are stying with my friend, anyway...

      Yeah i went to produce depot just the other day and was super dissappointed because i attempt to eat only organic produce, especially if the item desired is not one of the clean15, or is a one of the dirty dozen or whatnot. Anyway they have a TINY section for organic..

        Yes your right the organic section is very small,
        still more variety than here. I mix them up a little
        and try to keep my eyes open for the good stuff.
        Any recommendations for organic fruit in Ottawa?
        Does Costco sell organic?
        Never been there just thinking buying in large quantities
        may be a good option.

          yeah actually the best, is on saturday at 10am, till 2pm, there is the Ottawa Organic Farmers Market! google that! eheheheh it is great but it is only on Saturday mornings..

          besides that i actually go  to Farm Boy a lot.. they have lotsa organic stuff..

          Costco.. yeah thats a good question imma look into that, frankly i have been trying to find out more details about fruit/produce wholesale in ottawa...

      Is that Produce Depot you're talking about? I just bought a soursop there, was soooo good ($6 though!)!

        Yes, sorry wrong name. It has the largest variety I've seen so far.
        Decent prices too. On the Quebec side we have Marché Frais,
        I've been disappointed lately papaya's brown inside
        the quality is just not there.
        Ottawa is much better for fruit variety, prices, freshness.

    T & T Market!!!  Just off West Hunt Club road.  You can get it frozen in package or whole.

    I like the packages, I think they taste better.

      You live in Ottawa too? are there others?!

      i didnt see any packages... you mean.. the fruit would be already removed from the durian shell, and it would be just the fruit in a package? i found they had jackfruit setup like so...

        Yep, exactly!  They are in the fridge next to the frozen coconut and bananas.  I just went last week to get STOCKED UP!

        I think there are others, but I have been out of the loop for a while!

    I am currently in Alberta and feel your pain... I moved out here from the west coast of BC, and finding organic fruit or veggies is the new battle of my life.. UGH!

    I also have zero experience with fresh durian. I would say that the frozen stuff at your local asian market is the best youre going to get. If I had to put money on it, I would say that they are packaged and shipped frozen.
