I've seen some Instagram comments claiming that there are drawbacks to growing banana trees instead of grain. We could switch to grain pretty quickly, but I'd like to see a more in-depth discussion about the facts.

Not a either or question as far as I'm concerned. The greater the diversity of plants that are grown the better. As a gardener when growing veggies the general consensus is you need to rotate crops otherwise there is an increased risk of pathogens building up in the soil where the same crop is grown year after year.
Different climatic regions are more ideally suited to growing various crops - for instance bananas are ideally suited to the tropics whereas wheat is not.
Bananas are fairly productive as they are high in calories so from a calories per acre analysis they compare well to grains.
It really depends on what you want in your life Bananas are great and should be a part of everyone's diet but Bananas will easily go bad while grains are sustainable for a longer time. while it would be interesting to see which one we need more we still need both of these food items.
(This probably won't help or answer your question but I really wanted to give my opinion on this topic) (:

Well, the benefit of growing bananas is that you get bananas, haha. Banana plants are great that way.
