How Do You Manage With Long Hours at Work?

Hi. I work the graveyard shift, then I still need to get up early the next day to attend to my family.

Ideally, it's good for us to get 6-8 hours of sleep everyday, but some of us have crazy schedules that won't allow for it. Typically I get 3-4 hours of sleep, punctuated by little naps whenever I can fit them in.

When you're on a lifestyle like this, how do you guys cope with your depleted energy and still stay fit without falling off the wagon? It's especially hard around 1-3am when the midnight munchies kick in (I usually have a banana, hot tea, or several glasses of water to tide me over).

  • I like to bring dried fruit (bananas, mango, raisins are my favorites) and usually buy a box or two of cliff bars. I guess if you're fully raw you could also keep a big thermos full of daterade or banana smoothy. I work physical labor some days and as long as I get at least 300 calories in every couple hours I don't bonk out. As far as 6 hours of sleep I don't think that's good for you in the long run. I don't believe there's a set amount of sleep you need because everyone's different, but if you need an alarm clock to wake up you're probably not getting enough sleep.
