Amuse is based on the word muse, which is to think.
A - muse means literally to stop thinking.
I'm old enough to remember pre internet and pre cable tv let alone "smartphones" and my dad was a child of the depression.
Go for a week into the woods on holiday where they have no tv, cell phone, internet whatever and spend time creatively thinking of how to spend your free time. It can be a terrifying process for some people but it will be well worth it.
Yeah but muse can also mean one's inspiration to create art...a beautiful woman can be a muse, mother nature can be a muse. Though I agree, hollywood doesn't provide much in the way of a muse these days.
The best way to keep yourself entertained is not to absorb content but to create content! Learn to play an instrument, start to paint, do anything that works your creative energy and you'll create your own entertainment for year to come!
I also refuse to watch cable, but I do watch some of my favorite TV shows and documentaries on Hulu. I also work in video production so it's hard for me to not watch some TV on Hulu.
do it like a Bonobo just go around and have sex, ist the best activity by far!
Playing games with friends (e.g. "The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow" or "dixit"),
reading books (there are a lot of good ones out there!),
sunbathing and listening to your favourite music or some good audio book...
A lot of movies/ tv shows are actually very creative and intelligent, so I believe you can learn from watching them. It's easy to despondently sit in front of the television though and get nothing from it. Socializing is the best form of entertainment! Alone time is good too though so try reading/ learning something (a language, musical instrument,) or just do anything creative.
side note: entertainment means : distraction
and in fiction i can't think of things not containing the myth of redemption
Weeeeel, you could always try to take up digital art / traditional art. Painting can be loads of fun and posting your creations on http://www.deviantart.com/
Buy yourself a nice Wacom Bamboo tablet and start drawing - who knows, you might be a natural. Plus, with all that carb intake from fruits, you can devote that excess energy into your brain's creative juices.
You know, when it's raining and you can't go out for some cycling or jogging ^_^
I prefer documentaries over entertaining movies.
I also like to watch my rescued guinea pigs as well as sewing, do-it-yourself and tidy my apartment to get rid of clutter.
