Low Potassium after 15 Bananas

I was having strange episodes and ended up being hospitalized a couple nights when the episodes got really bad.  This wasn't the main problem but the doctors did note that my potassium was low.  The weird thing is I had eaten eaten FIFTEEN bananas that day (as well as other fruits and veggies).  I had been eating raw till 4 but had not been eating low sodium.  Any idea what caused the low potassium after eating plenty of bananas and other fruit?

  • also many medications will cause low potassium as well as other toxic elements such as mold, heavy metals.  and were your bananas ripe? :)

    • Thats interesting.  Yes, I only ate very ripe bananas.  Just cleaned my old apartment before moving and never found any mold.  BUT I did notice I had an episode almost every time I ran my humidifier.  It was a SilverClean technology humidifier that was supposed to clean itself.  I wonder if the Silver was poisoning me or something...

  • Nutrition can affect the blood levels of nutrients but illness can also affect your nutrient levels. Taken in isolation knowledge of something such as low potassium doesn't necessarily mean your intake was low but that your body could also be processing it improperly due to underlying conditions and illnesses.

    • Right.  I'm wondering if that could mean something like poor kidney function...  The more I think about it, the less I believe it was CAUSED by my diet alone.

  • Ask how low, and ask for the rest of your U and E's ( urea and electrolytes), and what your BP was and if your ECG was normal or not with that low K. If they haven't checked your magnesium, ask . It's difficult for K levels to be mantained if you have low Mg. ( medical doctor here).
If you were dehydrated, for whatever reason, your potassium might be low. Laxatives or diuretics can also cause it. And then more rare stuff, such as Conn syndrome etc. you are not munching loads of licorice are you?
Best wishes, I hope you are feeling better.

    • Thanks Marie.  My magnesium was perfectly fine, I remember them saying that.  As for the rest, I don't know.  I know my C reactive protein was high and my lactic acid was way high, as well as my white blood cell count.  No lax or diuretics.  No licorice either.  My heart rate resting was 140bpm and my whole body hurt.  I also had a fever.  My blood pressure would drop any time I stood up and I'd come close to fainting.  These episodes were just so strange!  It seems to be a mystery but I've been better lately and hoping to start eating that way again.  Who knows if it even was related to food anyway...

      • Everything ( cRP, white cell count, lactate)sounds like an infection of some sort...quite odd for your potassium to be low, so keep up the fruit! By the way, lemon juice has tons of potassium, try squirting some on your fruit. Take care.
        • exactly!  But the doctors could find no source of any localized infection at all!  They even did a spinal tap to test for meningitis.  Everything was negative.

  • The main link between potassium and sodium is that they both perform many of the same body functions, such as muscle contraction and fluid balance, however they usually do so in an opposing manner. For example, sodium draws fluid out of the cells, increasing blood pressure, while potassium draws fluid into the cells, decreasing blood pressure. Additionally, sodium intake can affect potassium excretion from the body, just as potassium intake can affect sodium excretion. An increased intake of one mineral will result in an increased excretion of the other mineral.

You say you have bananas, but what are the other things you are eating? How long have you been on raw till 4? There are so many variables here. Are you following raw till 4 as designed?

    • My other fruits were mango, dates, apples, grapes, oranges as staples.  I had brown rice for dinner with soy sauce, probably around 2500mg of sodium that day.  I had been eating about 3000 calories daily, 2/3 raw and 1/3 cooked at the end of the day.  So the sodium was the only thing that wasn't part of the raw till four design I believe.  I was hydrated and moderately active with intentional workouts.  I was eating some fat and beans, maybe 86/7/7 for my ratios.  I really want to go back to eating vegan but don't want to end up in the hospital again with everyone around me blaming my diet.  Occasionally I would eat cooked for more than just dinner.  I live in a northern climate so vitamin d is low.  Are you saying the sodium could have caused the low potassium?
