OLD AGE MEATHEADS

Alright here we go again, but why is it that all the places I read about healthy, long lifes...it comes from those living who are not vegetarian...of course there is the larger carbs and vegetables ratio, though there is always some little pieces of fish or meat involved say 3 times a week or at least once a week.

I have been vegan almost my whole life ( apart from vegetarian), though all the eldest who I know living past 96 years old are ... normal eaters..of course real, whole foods , but still some meat in there. They also lead not crazy active lifestyles.

I am wondering about the fact of b-12 missing from the human diet on veganism..is there any proof of longer living people on veganism?

Even in the china study when watching forks over knives I noticed he was not fully against a little consumption of fish or such..as he said " MAINLY" a whole plant food diet.

So here you go 30bader's, shed some of your light on this ... do not want negative comments, just trying to rummage through all this.

  • You might be interested in the book Blue Zones, which describes four of the longest lived and healthiest cultures on earth.  None are vegan but they do adhere to a high carb, low animal product lifestyle.

Another group to study would be the Seventh Day Adventists.  Their vegan adherence is leading to significant boosts in health compared to the standard populace.

    • got Blue Zones from the library, thanks for the recommendation WL! :)

    • I have read about it, this is exactly why I question things, but the Adventists also brings light...

its just this little thing if natural b12 is better or if vegan with supplementation ( it's all just the b-12 that boggles my mind I suppose - the fact vitamins did not really exists back in those days - and yes I get that soil wasn't so stripped of nutrients etc...but can you blame me for the curiosity aha?) thank you though so much really appreciating this outlook!

      • 40% of the population is B12 deficient, that has nothing to do with the vegan diet.  Read Could It Be B12 for some entertaining information, available at the library for free!

        • Too true. A few years back when I was suffering from Ross River Fever and Glandular on top of it, I happened upon a Naturopath who at a late age bothered to go off and become a regular GP. The reason she did this she said was for one reason and one reason only; so that she would heal mainstream clients and cure all kinds of ailments with a simple B 12 shot.

Why she was so dedicated to shooting people up; myself included was that her father during the war years use to line her and her siblings up every 6 six weeks and shoot them with B12 to maintain their health in the days when Smallpox, German Measles, Measles, Chick Pox, Mumps and Polio, Scarlet Fever, Rhematic Fever where around as well as dreaded TB Tuberculosis; to name but a few of the life threatening diseases that threatened people's very survival.

Incidentally this doctor who wasted no time instructing me to bare my bottom grow up on a very large and productive farm. Yes her and her family were avid meat-eaters and yet her father got it into his head that his children still needed B12 shots.

Funny that; and it's stranger still that this doc swore on her mother's grave that none or her siblings ever suffered from as much as a stomach virus when they were growing up, unlike the multitudes who lived around them and went to school with them who perished from the terrible scourges mentioned above.

Oh and my case, it took only one shot of B12 to end my crippling state of being bedridden for over 13 months.

        • The fact we are deficient and even meat eaters ...makes me more calm about continuing my life as a vegan because I truly love it.

Thanks I will surely read up on it :)

What about omega's and all this...I guess it's simply because with the more information out there the more confusing it is ...people just ate what they could get and lived, now with this information and constant new 'discoveries' it can drive one mad haha

          • you get the right omegas on low fat, it's only when you eat lots of fat (above 10%) that you start to get deficiencies in anything including omegas.

read the bottom sentence...this also got me wondering...

so difficult to know pure health..maybe tiny bits of fish sprinkled on food is benefitial in long run?

I really have no idea, all I know is most HCRV I see look rather joyous which is what I love and am on continuing but my curious mind always gets int he way sometimes and needs answers..which of course Idon't think anyne knows 100% to but..help for me not to feel alone haha
