Local sources/prices of food staples

Hi everyone, thought it would be helpful to share where we all get our fruit in the Brisbane area. I'm sure many of us following the 811/30BAD  way of eating probably have many of the same staple foods that we buy regularly and by sharing where and what we pay people in similar areas or buying the same stuff could get in contact and buy in bulk as buying this way usually always attracts a discount. So if as many people as possible could follow on in a similar fashion what I write below that would be great.

Skybury red papaya: 4.99/kg @ Brookside produce store and also at Asian grocer in Darra. Store at Darra will sometimes have them for 1.99/kg when they are getting too ripe, but still great eating.

Cucumbers: 1.49 - 1.99 for a 1kg bag at most of the Asian grocers in Darra.

Durian: 454g packets of frozen Thai durian for $5.70 from the Asian foods wholesaler in Sumner Park. I get this 'Cock' brand which has two equal sized parcels of fruit pieces individually wrapped and then vacuum sealed in the packaging. The same product is sold a minutes away in Darra for $7.00 each. The price can be even cheaper from the wholesaler if larger quantities are bought.

Other fruits I regularly buy from where ever they are good quality and value are: mangoes, tomatoes, mandarines, oranges, mushrooms, celery and avocados. The markets I regularly visit are Moggill, Fernvale, Ipswich Showgrounds, Rocklea on a Saturday and in the City on Wednesdays.

  • Thanks Brett this is great info.

I am moving up to Brissy next week, so will be looking for all these wonderful markets etc to visit.

Looking forward to the sunshine and more laid back attitude of Brisbane (so i'm told)

I'm coming up from Sydney, where everything is rush rush rush.

Will check out the Brisbane fruit bats site - sounds great!

    Peace and love
    Michelle

  • there's a good fruit shop called charlies fruit market on ferny way in ferny hills on the northside i got strawberries for $5 a kilo and bananas for $1 a kilo a couple days ago and there's usually alot of ripe sweet fruit for cheaper than most places not organic

  • Hi Brett and everyone else!

Brett , thanks for initiating this. I, too, am based in Ipswich. But since I don't have a car, I am finding that getting affordable organic food (in bulk and with variety) around here is quite hard! Finding cheap conventional fruits and veg is pretty easy but organic, on the other hand, my oh my, is not easy...!

Anyway, I can comment on few of the online organic produce shops I've just started to use this month (I've only used the first two once each so far).

    Organic and Quality Foods (http://www.organicfoods.com.au/)

Depending on the week, they sell ripe organic bananas for $2.88/kg. I tried to order ~10kg of these but since the stocks are very limited, they could only give me 6kg.

If you're into dried fruit, they sell 1kg dried figs (from Turkey) for $13 -- YUM!

Delivery is $5.95 for orders $50-100 and $4.95 for orders over $100.

    Daintree Organics (http://www.daintreeorganics.com/

They have a Organic Cavendish $12kg box for $36 (ie, $3.00/kg). I believe prices can change, however are at around this price usually (I think).

They don't seem to have a "minimum purchase" requirement. Delivery charges start at $3.30 in Brisbane. They charged me $4.39 (I live in Eastern Heights). Not bad!

I bought my VERY FIRST black sapote for $1.95 this week -- can't wait for it to get super gooey and ripe!

Overall, I think their produce is a little cheaper than Organic and Quality Foods or the store mentioned below.

    Ripe n Raw Organics (http://www.ripenraworganics.com.au/)

I've yet to order from this store.

    Also, sometimes I go to,

    Ipswich Showgrounds Sunday Market

    Rarely to,

    Wray Organic

And if you're in the Ipswich area, I would also like to make a plug for,

    Sunset Markets (http://www.facebook.com/TheSunsetMarkets)

    Ipswich Good Food Co-op (http://www.facebook.com/Ipswichgoodfood)

Brett, I'm keen on bulk buying! I also know another high raw foodist in Ipswich -- she might be interested as well? Anybody else reading this live in Ipswich? Let's get in touch!

    • Hello I just moved to Brisbane

At the mo staying at dutton park.

I'd be keen for banana, mangoes, sapotes and dates?
  • right about cavendish usually $2.50-3kg for organics, i actually got some organic ladyfingers at City markets yesterday for $1 per kilo, took home last 4kg, I'll check out rocklea prices before I head to Fruitopia, durian $4kg in the valley, thought once I leave Brisy I don't think I'll eat frozen ones again, two much of a hassle unless introducing them to someone. if ur not full on organic here in Oz like am, farmers market in the middle of the valley are pretty good, can get discounted fruit, like 19c a kilo watermelon today, mangoes $1kg & most fruits for $1kg if u buy from discount shelves next to fridges, incl thai mangoes mandarins though maybe avoid non-organic blood oranges, peppers & tomatoes, cheers Sapote.
