It will be my first time in Hawaii and I cannot wait - for me it's truly an adventure to neverland.

We've been looking around at different accommodation options but I think the dream situation would be to stay with someone local who can really share the beauty of the island with us. We are open to wwoofing, couch surfing, or possibly paying a small amount for accommodation.

Some basic info about us:

- both in mid twenties

- I live in Montreal, Canada. My boyfriend lives in Ontario

- I grew up eating standard american/canadian diet and found the hclf lifestyle about a year and a half ago <3

- i work as a store designer for a retail company (I studied architecture)

- mangoes are my favourite :)

If you or someone you know would be interesting in sharing your space with us for a few days let me know - we'll share some more information about ourselves! We'd love to make some friends and cannot wait to soak up some sunshine.

love,

Jen

I went to school at UH Manoa but wasn't there long enough, and only been to Oahu.

Ive been researching Kauai and the Big Island. My heart seems to be going with Kauai but I want to see what the Big Island has to offer as well since it seems like most 811ers are on the big island.

I'm looking to surf, snorkel, dive, hike, be around more 811ers and eat lots of fruit of course :) haha. I work from home with an online business so the job part is no problem.

Any recommendations or insights into Kauai vs Big Island for jungle like living and being close to nature. Looking for a peaceful sanctuary. Honestly I would love to live off the grid but looking to rent for a reasonable price.

What are the prices at the farmers markets? place to avoid? or is there enough fruit I could forage as well as buy?

Thanks all for the info and advice :)

I just completed 2 months work exchange on coconut Chris's farm and just wanted to spread the word about this amazing place. When I first got there to be honest I really didn't care about gardening I just wanted good fruit and to connect with like minded people and all I saw was a green blurr. But working with Chris really opened me up to the magical world of plants and I will be forever greatful! It was a really grounding experience everyday being barefoot bathing in waterfalls and eating straight from trees you have given energy to is a beautiful experience of connectedness with the universe. Now I can tell what a lot of plants are and find myself looking out the car window for fruit trees and fallen fruit on the roadside- you'd be surprised what's available and usually going to waste - rant - anyway I'm going to go back before I have to go home but after my time I feel confident enough to start my own veggie garden and plant trees. I also know how important seeds are and will never throw away good fruit seeds again. They are they future, who knew :) as I said in another dis it's super close to Wiapio valley - one of the most beautiful intense places I've been. So after working I would either swim in the private waterfall on the property of go the beach in the valley or hitchhike into town etc - I also hiked to Waimanu valley with some people I met on the farm - it was incredible! So many cool projects are going on and it's cool to be apart of something when you can see how successful the past ones areIt was a good time :) eating fresh organic ALIVE produce makes a huge differenceI felt a push from within to go - took a chance and am a better person for itA big shout out to Chris- coconut on 30 badThanks brotherAloha ke akuaFeel free to ask me anything

Hello. I am about to embark on a trip through Central America for the next 9 months - one year. Afterwards I will need to decide where I want to live next. I grew up in Southern California, and have lived in Austin, Texas for the last 5 years. Living in Texas, I have really grown accustomed to an inexpensive lifestyle, and love the freedom of living cheap, spending most earnings on food, rent, and savings. I would like to continue this lifestyle in some place new. The resounding theme in my head sings "Tropics, tropics, tropics." Can one live in Hawaii on the cheap?

Of course, job availability, and the likeliness to make friends with similar mindsets are probably the most important. My work experience is as a tour guide on Segways for the last 4 years, and although I do not want a full-time position in this sort of work again, I recognize it as good way to make money whilst doing other part-time gigs. The purpose of my trip is to gain Spanish language skills in hopes of one day becoming a freelance translator, as well as gaining a Yoga teacher certificate in hopes of working part-time in this arena upon my return. I also feel as though I am a good teacher, and would love to be a part-time math tutor for kids struggling in school.

Is the fruit more plentiful, and less expensive than elsewhere in the states? I'm guessing this is probably true if you get to know people growing fruit....What kind of cheap rents can be found? Do there happen to be any fruitarian communities anywhere already? Or am I completely deluded?

Thanks for reading; any input would be helpful to me. Thanks everyone!

I'd like to get 3 or 4 people (including myself) so that the rent would be nice and low, maybe around $200 each. Ideally this place would be close to a bus stop so everyone could get into town for fruit, or if someone had a vehicle we could all share in the costs of going into town for fruit shopping.

Anyone interested? It will be another month or so before I can leave this place since I need to give notice, so I just want to see if I can get some people together.
