MINCED OATHS
--An Important Message for Believers--

"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength [my Rock], and my Redeemer" (Psalm 19:14)

"Sound Speech, that cannot be condemned" (Titus 2:8)

The words of our mouth ought to be well pleasing to the Lord Jesus Christ who purchased us with His own blood "that He might redeem us from all iniquity [lawlessness] and purify unto Himself a peculiar people [a people of His own], zealous of good works" (Titus 2:14). May the fruit of our lips always honor "that worthy Name by the which ye are called" (James 2:7).

As blood-bought children of God we should be very thoughtful about the words that we use, and very careful in our choice of words. This is especially true at times of surprise or amazement or sudden pain or disappointment when we tend to burst out with an exclamatory word or comment. Those of the world blurt out all kinds of inappropriate words, not giving much thought to what they are really saying. All such careless speech and profane cursing should find no place on the lips of a redeemed saint: "Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips" (Psalm 141:3).

What is a MINCED OATH? The verb "mince" means "to lessen the force of, to weaken, as by euphemism." What does the word EUPHEMISM mean? A euphemism is "the use of a word or phrase that is less expressive or direct but considered less distasteful, less offensive, etc. than another" [from a tract entitled, "Christian Cursing" by J. W. Hiebert, published by Tabernacle Baptist Church in Lubbock, TX]. What we have then is one word or phrase being substituted for another. Instead of using the Name of God, we use a substitute word in place of God's name that sounds better and is less offensive. Instead of using a swear word we use a substitute word that actually means the same but does not sound as bad. Thus we can say that a MINCED OATH is "a form of cursing that replaces a direct curse word with a more acceptable word [better sounding word] which in effect does the same thing." [Ibid.]

"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain" (Exodus 20:7) Consider some of the words that are used as substitutes for the Name of God. Look up these words in a good dictionary and you will find the following: GOSH is "a substitute for God used in minced oaths." GOLLY is "a euphemism for God." EGAD is "a softened or euphemistic form of the oath `by God.'" GOODNESS is a word substituted for God (compare Matthew 19:16-17).

GOODNESS GRACIOUS are two key attributes of God used in a careless and irreverent way. The expression MERCY or MERCY SAKES is another thoughtless use of a precious attribute of God. HOLY COW, HOLY MACKEREL, HOLY SMOKE are expressions that make fun and make light of the awesome holiness of our God. If we really believe Revelation 15:4 ("for Thou only are holy") then we will not call other things holy in a thoughtless and frivolous way. May the Holy Spirit control our lips.

Those who are outwardly lawless and wicked often are heard saying, "for God's sake" or "for Christ's sake." It is done in an irreverent, blasphemous way. Those who are more cultured use substitutes: "for Goodness sake" "for Pete's sake" "for the love of Mike" "for crying out loud" etc.

In a similar way the Name of Christ is abused. GEE is a "euphemistic contraction of Jesus." The same is true of other words such as GEE, GEEWHIZ, GEEZ or CHEEZ, CHEESE, CHEECE, SHEECE, "all of which relate back to the Lord Jesus Christ when used as an exclamatory remark" [Ibid.] It's not difficult to figure out the origin of such expressions as JIMINY CRICKETS and JEEPERS CREEPERS.

Curse words and swear words have also been softened by minced substitutes. Remember, garbage is still garbage, even if it is placed in a nice container. We need to detest all curse words and realize that the substitutes stink as well.

It is of interest how the ungodly so often speak on themes of judgment, hell and damnation. Deep in their hearts they blaspheme and rebel against a God whose right it is to damn all those who reject His beloved Son (John 3:18). DARN simply is a substitute for "damn, a euphemism for the curse." HECK is "an exclamation used as a euphemism for hell."

"All of this, while deplorable, is nevertheless a sort of backhanded acknowledgment that God is real and Biblical revelation is true. It is significant that adherents of other religions never take the names of their gods in vain! Who ever heard of a Buddhist, or a Muslim, or a Hindu do such a thing? If they want to swear, they also will often inadvertently use the Name of the true God, or His Christ, in vain. Even atheists frequently sprinkle their conversations with blasphemous Christian epithets, calling on God [whom they claim doesn't exist] to send someone to hell [which they claim doesn't exist]" [from Days of Praise by Henry Morris, October 25, 1990]. Satan, who energizes these people (Eph. 2:2), knows so very well the reality of God and hell, and his children (John 8:44) give evidence of this by their cursing.

"The third commandment requireth the holy and reverent use of God's Name, titles, attributes, ordinances, words and works" [The Westminister Shorter Catechism]. As heavenly citizens, may our God keep us from profanity and from "near profanity" (from anything that comes close to it). When other believers are found to use minced oaths, seek to gently and lovingly and tactfully point this out to them, remembering that at times we have all been guilty of the careless use of language (James 3:2). May the fruit of our lips consist of praise to God and thanksgiving to His Name (Hebrews 13:15).

"A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned" (Matthew 12:35-37)

"Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?" (James 3:10-11)

"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers" (Ephesians 4:29).

http://www.middletownbiblechurch.org/christia/minced.htm

What can we learn from that?

…11But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12"Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13"Then let our appearance be observed in your presence and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king's choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see."…

14So he listened to them in this matter and tested them for ten days. 15At the end of ten days their appearance seemed better and they were fatter than all the youths who had been eating the king's choice food. 16So the overseer continued to withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and kept giving them vegetables.

Are there any issues that you, as a Christian, are struggling with? Are there are issues you think the church makes too big or not big enough? So often, people tell you that you have to make a decision. You have to be on one side or the other. This is in reference to Rev 3:15-17 (don't be lukewarm). I am always hot when it comes to loving and caring for people, but I admit that I struggle with a few issues, and that may never change. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter whether you're right or wrong (save for whether you've accepted Christ or not). What matters is your love. By our love, people will know who we are. Unfortunately, the general public categorizes us by our perceived hate.

Abortion

Homosexuality

War

Premarital Sex

Premarital Living

Not having Children

Birth Control

Alcohol

Marijuana

Any topic is up for grabs. The person that led me to Christ instructed me to read through the whole bible at-least once; which I did & found it to be such a blessing I haven't stopped!

Psalm 119:105

King James Version (KJV)

105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

One of the great benefits I have found from doing this is you allow the bible to speak to you itself without somebody's opinions getting involved, which in turn makes you less susceptible to false doctrine. Also I have found this quote from Dwight L Moody to be quite true: The bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from the bible

So if you guys haven't read through it yet I would really encourage you to go for it! or if you have then please don't stop now but keep going!!! - I'm hoping to crack the big 20 this year.

Since I might have talked to a "real" creationist some months ago and I just read about it in here, I think it is a good idea to fully understand the concept and what's behind it.

How does a creationist see evolution, as in what's the concept that is seen here. There are a lot of different views that might be called "evolution" like "I don't believe we developed from monkeys" or "I don't believe the Universe is billions of years old".

Also where does the creationist believe come from? From what I remember, and I have read the New Testament quite recently, it is not mentioned there, so I guess it stems from the Old Testament. Which doesn't really make any sense for me. I try to put into few words how I see it, so you will know what might help my understanding. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew from and for the Jews (guided by God), who knew how to read it - every one of the letters is a letter, a number and a sign, without any vowels, and the Old Testament was written in one go without blanks. That means there is a huge amount of interpretations for, not even just every word, but for every letter in the Bible, depending on its numeric value, the symbol it represents and the connection to all of its surrounding letters and words and their numeric values and symbols. For example the first word of the Bible "Barasheet" - "in beginning" - can also be read as "The Son of God will be destroyed by His (Gods) own hand on a cross" (yes, just in that single word).

Even more important for me is that the Old Testament doesn't matter for the Christian believe. While the simple, and because of that as seen from the explanation above, very inaccurate / incomplete translation given in the Christian Bible can act as an added helpful guidance, its rules have become obsolete by Jesus teachings and his death on the cross and our exact believes in how our Creation took place plays no role for our Salvation in Jesus.

For me it looks as if the inaccurate /incomplete translation has been taken completely literal, without any bonuses for our transformation in Christ, while creating a huge disadvantage in the conversion of people to the Faith in Jesus. Because for an atheist rhetorician arguing with a creationist is like fishing in a barrel, which on its own is not the best promotion for the Christian Faith, but quarreling over such a moot point only distracts from the "good news" (I hope I got the translation correct, in German "good news" would be the "frohe Botschaft" which sounds a lot better and is another term for the New Testament).

An explanation into the believes of a creationist would be really helpful for me. Mhm. Probably best from someone who himself is not, but has experience in dealing with them and knows about the way they are thinking, because what I have written might offend some creationist, which was not my intention at all. But knowing about the way a creationist is thinking will not only help me in my own dealings with them, but will also help me when I am talking to my non Christian friends, which are still most of them, some of which are already showing interest in Christianity because of my own conversion (more accurately, because I am praying for them and Jesus is working through me, I don't want to put a claim on any of His doings :) ) and if creationism comes up it would help to be able to explain it more deeply.

Thank you for your time & my apologies to anyone I might have offended - praise the Lord :)

Now I think evolution is a pile of complete bologna and believe in Creationism, but that hasn't shaken my faith. I mean, come on, just because monkeys like bananas does not exactly lend credibility to why humans do, too. Monkeys also like getting drunk, lol. And the whole point of the "Missing Link" thing is that yes, it is missing now, was missing then, and will always be missing, since it doesn't exist, IMO. There's plenty of evidence man and dinosaur walked together and all carbon dating is at best educated guessing and at worst grossly inaccurate misinformation.

Actually I was reflecting over something my favorite bible teacher said on his radio program The Narrow Path with Steve Gregg, that in the beginning humans were essentially fruitarians, but then God gave them animals to eat. If we look at the Old Testament from a historical perspective(and I do believe it to be an highly accurate historical document) the period of time where they were essentially fruit eaters was also when humans were reportedly the most longest lived ever.

I was discussing with my mum today why Christians have all the love and kindness morals yet they casually go to the supermarket and buy their daily doses of meat? I find this very mind boggling, as surely they don't believe slaughter houses are an act of love and kindness...I was also talking with my friend at school who is a Christian and a meat lover and was sharing my new knowledge of veganism. She was like "I couldn't imagine not eating meat... I need my meat... Where do you get your protein?..." I was like "...but as your a Christian surely it's wrong to kill..." And she was like "animals are there for us to eat..."I know that humans can 'survive' eating meat, and if you're starving and meat is the only thing then it would keep you alive. But, when there is fresh fruit on a tree or bush sitting their so juicy and delicious there seems no moral point killing those poor innocent animals. This was so frustrating so thought I would ask you all your thoughts. Thanks.

First let me say that I'm a pastor of a Baptist church and a new vegan. Several of my congregation members are farmers and cattlemen. I'm also living in small town Texas. At my congregation we eat often. During group meals I can eat as healthy as I want and it is no big deal. My calling is such that I will be having to eat often with people. Also, my congregation apparently wants a fat preacher because they keep on making me all sorts of foodstuffs from cookies to homemade jelly.

My question is to you seasoned vegans, how have you dealt with these scriptures?

Are these moral or ettiquette, suggestions or mandates?

Thanks.

1 Corinthians 10:23-33

23 "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is constructive. 24 Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. 25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, 26 for, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it." 27 If some unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. 28 But if anyone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the man who told you and for conscience' sake-- 29the other man's conscience, I mean, not yours.

Hi friends,

I read 80/10/10 about a year ago and ever since then I've really wanted to jump in 100%. However, soon after I finished the book, my husband and I started traveling and we did a Discipleship Training School with YWAM and a 3 month missions trip to Thailand and Cambodia. During this time most of our meals were cooked by the school or our hosts and it definitely wasn't 80/10/10. :-) I did manage to stay about 95% vegetarian by picking out the meat when our hosts were in the other room and giving it to our meat eating friends. When possible, I would go to the market and pick up whatever fruit was available.

Now we are finished traveling for a while and I really want to do 80/10/10rv. I'm probably 50-90% raw, depending on the day, but my dilemma is that I'm in a very hospitable community of friends (which is wonderful) that loves to eat meals at each other's houses a lot. Sometimes we're eating with others 3-4 nights a week, either at their house or our house. I've tried doing cooked 80/10/10 for our guests but it's super difficult to find something tasty without using spices. Fresh herbs would help but they're expensive here.

How do you guys cope with situations like that? I guess I could bring my own food if I'm going to their place, but I don't think they would really be happy with a bowl of fruit when they come to our house. I really don't like cooking (another plus of 80/10/10rv!) and it would be so much easier if everyone just ate raw! Anyway, I haven't found a good solution to this problem even though I've been trying to figure it out for ages. It's stressing me out so any help would be appreciated!
