I come from a restrictive background, though I have been weight restored for over a year now. I've noticed that my thighs have been getting bigger, while my stomach has been getting smaller but my abdominal muscles seem to be fading. I know I've been on this lifestyle for barely any time but I just want to be reassured that this is normal. I don't know if it's that I'm not eating enough, though I haven't been restricting at all and eat at least 1,000 cals from dates alone.

How long did it take those who have had a restrictive background get through the healing stage? (I know it's different for every body, but I just want to have an idea) And what is the minimum amount of cals I should eat per day?

Thank you all so much!!

Hi everyone! :)So a little about me.... I never was taught nutrition from my parents or school. So I pretty much shoved my face full of whatever food was "yummy" and ate whenever I wanted. I'm now at a weight which I'm not even comfortable sharing with anyone. Since I've gotten the internet on my smart phone (3months ago) I've looked into diets etc. Then I started a job last year where my boss was teaching me about 801010..... I've been self researching it to make sure it was safe and I have absolute NO doubts that it isn't! :)I quit smoking 3 weeks ago, I don't drink, and I've also kicked the horrible habit of soda 3 weeks ago as well. Only water! :)With my weight the only exercise I can do is walk or weights. So I chose walking, and I've been having a smoothie of 7 bananas and 10 frozen cherries with 1 tbsp of chia seeds and 16oz of water for breakfast then for lunch I'll have a salad fie lunch but it doesn't quite fill me so I eat.... and eat and eat and eat lol. Then for supper ill have salad again..Tomorrow I'm starting the 30 day smoothie challenge and I'm picking up my 40lb box of bananas!!!! :)Is bananas for breakfast/lunch and dinner okay for 30 days? Thank you!!!!! :)

Hi! I am new to this lifestyle. I have been vegan off and on again for 4 years after the birth of my daughter. I realized I was allergic to dairy products, and then watched Food Inc. and some other documentaries. I had gained 50 pounds while I was pregnant and had swollen ankles from the water retention almost the whole time. It was awful. Once I cut the dairy out of my diet, the weight came off so fast! Then I stopped eating meat a little after that and it stayed off for about three years. I was vegan, but I started eating a lot of cookies, drinking coffee, and a lot of fat, even though it was vegan. I thought as long as it's vegan I'm good. So of course the weight came back.

So now I am trying the LFRV lifestyle and I have more energy. I started eating raw this past January, but I was eating too much fat. I stopped the raw diet a couple of times because I was having horrible allergies or cold symptoms. I was probably detoxing, but it was impossible to be outside once the weather warmed up. I was constantly sneezing and blowing my nose. I am starting over, but this time I am keeping the fat and protein low! Hopefully my allergies and/or detox will be over quickly! Has any one else experienced similar detox symptoms?

I hear so many other people losing weight doing this, i walk an average of 5 miles a day plus 40 mins of yoga everyday. so I'm not necessarily sedentary but i just don't know what else do. I'd really like some input on this seeing as so many other people on this website also get a lot of feedback things. thanks!!

I wanted to know if my weight loss goals were realistic though.

So far, in 2 months (not sure how quickly because I just weighed myself for the first time since I've been abroad last weekend) I've lost a total of 8 pounds while transitioning to HCCV and being more active. I also think that I'm finally letting go of my ED tendencies--which I have struggled for 7 years now. I'm done with restricting calories and am committing myself to a lifestyle. I'm no longer buying into the idea of water fasts for quick weight loss (which I've done for 19 and 21 days in the past) or in starving myself.

That said, my goal is to lose around 5 lbs a month on this lifestyle, which I think is completely reasonable. However, I was wondering what you all thought? My physical activity is jogging around 5 to 6 k around 5x/week. I'm not really monitoring every calorie, but I'm trying to get 2000 since I'm still eating cooked food.

Opinions?

(more bg information on my ED--I'm pretty sure I'm out of starvation mode as I've gained back weight when I stopped purging and started just eating a SAD Vegetarian-style diet the past 2 years, though the ED mindset and desire to drop weight fast were still present though I "failed" at restricting consistently and binged more; currently 5'3" and 143 lbs)

I have been on the HCV lifestyle for a year and a half now. I am coming from a background of severe calorie restriction and over exercising. Not surprisingly, I have gained lots of weight, inches, fat; water weight in the last year and a half. I went from 185lbs in April 2010 to 147lbs in August 2010, 27 inch waist, about 25% body fat (through calorie restriction) then went on a slow increase to about 180 ( September 2012), went HCV September 25, 2012, and have gained up until now. My waist is now 35 inches, 39% body fat ( clinically in the obese range :(, and I am growing)

I go on stints of trying to focus on getting lots of greens, or trying to get lots of carbs in (more than 4000, which makes me really tired, then I can't focus, or exercise), get my 30 minutes of exercise, but that cuts into my sleep schedule, and trying to sleep enough cuts into my exercise and throws my schedule off so I can't get enough food in before I have to go to work!

I struggle to get all my ducks in a row - enough sleep, enough calories, enough exercise, enough greens. At the end of the day, if I do one thing really well, another suffers. I know that I have to persist and try to get enough of each, but what do you all think I should focus on? Should I try to get enough carb calories and not worry about greens? Should I sleep as soon as I am the least bit tired, taking naps when I can? Should I try to exercise more, even though it makes me even more hungry?

I eat between 3300-4000 cals/ day. Sleep- 8-9 hours, greens- days go by with none, then I'll have 1 or 2 lbs.

Exercise- 0-30 minutes - always high intensity ( TRX, biking hard, HR between 150-170)

I am 5 feet 7 inches

202 lbs.

I eat raw 80 percent of the time, and if I am running low on bananas, I have brown rice.

I eat 0 overt fats.

Winter Diet :

Bananas (90-100% of diet)

Rest:

oranges

apples

celery

green leaf lettuce

bell pepper ( I'll have one once in a while)

Brown rice

potatoes (very infrequently)

Berries

Mangoes

Corn pasta

fresh tomatoes

canned tomatoes

I have gone through long bouts of eating mostly dates, but they give me heartburn and I'm sick of them.

I had restaurant vegan food (a.k.a fatty food) 4times in December, and probably 4 or 5 other times in the last year and a half.

What do you think? If I have to choose one thing to focus on for now: Am I seriously deprived in nutrients/ variety of food? Am I not getting enough carbs to start releasing fat? Should I exercise more ( I can barely get in the 30 minutes of exhausting workouts as it is...), Sleep more and stop spending so much time on 30bad? Should I just stop worrying, keep doing the same thing and hope the weight comes off eventually?

I know that a fit body starts in the kitchen so I need some pointers and some advice. looking to loose 5 to 10 pounds.

Sometimes i eat up to 3 LARGE streamed potatoes with some sweet plantain and a lettuce head.

What I dance is salsa and I have classes 3 times a week for 2 hours somedays to 4 hours on other days.

I stretch 3 to 4 times a week intensely and I walk or run at the gym 1 to 2 times a week.

Please Please Please tell me it is possible to loose this bump on my tummy and create that leg gap that we ladies all die for? :)

ps. I am extremely dedicated to this lifestyle so any tips welcome...oh and I am transitioning into a HCRV

Hey guys!I was wondering. It's hard for me to get past 2000 calories even on a binge, and I can't see myself getting past 1700 calories a day, or even making it to 1500! I mean, I want to assume that medium/large sized bananas/apples/oranges/tomatoes/so on all have 100 calories a piece, but I don't think that's right...Anyhow, I'm 160 cm / 5'3", and if I'm anything like all the women in my family, I'll get shorter if I lose weight. My Mom recently lost 100 lbs and she went from 5'6" to 5'2" in that time (6 months-ish). I mean, I get that she's old and not eating right and basically starving herself silly, but still!I'm not very active, but I plan to start 100 squats and 100 jumping jacks a day, which is... fairly little, at my rate of 2 JJ's a second and 1 squat per second.I want to start using an elliptical as well.I mean, I've been having smoothies for breakfast that (according to my faulty cal counting) are about 400 cals a piece. I can't eat much at one time (of anything) or I tend to get abdominal migraines, so I was thinking that spreading my food throughout the day would be easier. Also, I'm worried about getting a good spread of nutrients? I mean, currently at home I have:BananasCarrotsJalapenos (for a raw picante dip)PearsApplesOrangesKaleCeleryTomatoesAvocadosBerriesRaw AlmondsChia SeedsThat doesn't seem very variety-filled to me

Been vegan for the last 4 years and lately switched to raw low fat.. I have always been athletic so i do have a fair bit of muscle...any time i tell people i am 60kg they are surprised but obviously seems normal to me as i have always been around that weight range....
ideally, i would like to get down to around 55kg...but at the end of the day, the number on the scales isnt that important, i guess its just those 'skinny' jeans i would like to get back into :)

does any one have advice, been in my shoes before, sound like your story, have recommendations for calorie intake?

all/any feedback or comments welcomed! :)

Hi there,

I wanted to share my personal experiences as well as go into discussion with you about similar experiences. I started out with 80-10-10 on February this year, but WITH calorie restrictions. This worked fine in the beginning and brought me down to ~ 9% bodyfat. Then I wanted to go even lower by lowering my calorie intake... and my mind just sent me from one cheat meal to another. So I ended with a little eating disorder because I always wanted to control calories, and then cheated and then tried to go back and so on.

After I gained back every fat that I initially lost, I decided to go for 80-10-10 unrestricted. I made that switch 18 days ago. With muscle gain as my workout focus, I consume about 4000 to 5000 calories each day. I make Datorade for breakfast with 1500 to 2000 cals depending on the timeframe when I'll be able to eat again.

Last weekend, my body requested for a huge amount of carbs. I drank Datorade for breakfast (1500 cals), 2 hours later I was hungry and my brother cooked some spaghetti with tomato sauce without any oil. Although cooked, I ate like 300 grams spaghetti. Still hungry. So I ate half of a vegan bread (made with 2 table-spoons of oil). In the evening hunger hit me again. Now I ate 500 grams of pure spaghetti - no sauce, nothing, just the pasta. I think I ended up around 6000 or 7000 cals this day. It felt like my body needed the assurance that the "starvation period" is over. Once and forever. I would have gone for bananas and apples instead of bread and spaghetti but I had no ripe bananas and i was running out of dates.

Trying to fall asleep that night I noticed that my body was producing massive amounts of heat. I literally had to remove all blankets in order to rest and sleep. So I was very happy because I thought that this is proof that excess calories are burned off as heat.

The funny thing is, although I consume that much calories, at least I don't gain in body fat percentages. My caliper still shows 13-14% bodyfat.

I workout 4 times a week by weight lifting in order to gain muscle mass. I plan to include endurance training during the 3 other days in the week. With that in mind, I really like the "no calorie restriction" mode because that ensures, I get enough calories in order to build up muscles. By the way - I will proof to you that getting huge on 80-10-10 is just a matter of intense weight training. And I work together with my friend Karl Ess, who really knows how to build muscle www.KARL-ESS.com.

My questions:

However, I wonder how long will it take for my body to switch over to fat loss. Basically I am waiting for the first drop that I can measure with my skinfold body fat caliper.

Is there any logical explanation that can detail the process of the body losing fat?

Being an athlete I know how fat loss works in the calorie restriction mode from a biological standpoint. However, I am interested in the "no calorie restriction" mode for fat loss.

I'll keep you posted,

Ralf

Alright! I've only been vegan since October. I have been trying since March to be low fat vegan/raw vegan. right now I'm at the point where I eat all fresh fruits and veggies except I'll have pasteurized fruit juice toward the end of the night when I'm craving cooked foods. I'll also occasionally have fat free hummus with my lettuce wrap and have a bite of a vegan snack at my job at a health food store. I would say 90% to 95% of my calories are from fresh produce. Does everyone think this is a satisfactory diet? What else should I work on?

Now on too my body:

I am 5'2 and 120 lbs, I wear i size 0/2 in jeans.my waist is 26" and my thighs are 19". I have a chubby tummy and thighs. I am beginning to run and have been riding my bike regularly for the past two weeks. I haven't seen any change in weight or size in the past 3-4 months. what else could I do to boost my weight?

Thanks for any response!

I know this has possibly been discussed a lot, but I'm a bit confused about how many calories to eat.

In the 80-10-10 book he describes the easy way to work out required calories for BMR is to times weight by 10, but he says either current or desired and that's what confuses me. I'm currently 182lb and would like to get back down to around 135lb. So I want to lose about 50lbs. I have read all about the starvation study conducted in the 1940s, so know that calorie restriction diet is not the way to go. But do I go by the weight I am or the weight I want to be??

I also notice that a lot of the people on here who have successfully lost weight, do a lot of daily exercise. I'm not able/ willing to do that much. I've started back into my exercise which currently is doing 20minutes of cardio (elliptical trainer usually) and then a weights session which is probably another 15minutes plus stretching. I plan to increase this a bit as I get fitter, but I have a young child who needs my time (and restricts how much sleep I can get) and I work etc, I'm not going to be running 10km/day like some of the people here. So I'm wondering about people who have successfully lost weight with just moderate daily exercise not lots..?

On the other diet I was consuming around 1100 calories a day. Now, trying to hit 2500 calories is fun! I like not depriving myself of food, however today I got on the scale and i've gained 7 pounds!

I know the body takes time to transition. I also know that Freelee said NOT to weigh yourself, but I wanted to make sure that this works for me. I switched because I stopped loosing weight the other way and had a goal to loose 10 lbs, now that goal is up to 17 lbs, and I'm quite frustrated.

Does anyone have any advice?

It seems that we are many who are perplexed or perhaps intimidated by the giant calorie intake/ weight loss equation.

Well, I have just returned from a short vacation to St. Louis which was bookended by an intense stairclimb race (good) and gooey butter cake (bad). I know we each have our reasons for turning to the 811 way of life but I wanted to give you all my personal philosophy. I strongly believe that life is for living and that deprivation leads to temptation. If I lived in Hawaii or some other beautiful island where I would never leave the beach and had access to a variety of fresh gorgeous fruit I would be 100% raw vegan -- without a doubt. But I am single mother/ middle manager at a Fortune 500 company who works 100 hour weeks...the only thing I look forward to is escaping on vacation. The few occasions I get to escape I want to experience the full array of what that city has to offer -- that ranges from attractions and of course local food. I feel like by living 811 for the lion's share of the time with small episodes of gourmet cooked food limited to vacations -- I will feel neither deprived therefore tempted to cheat or missing out on life.

So after a few days of huge salads punctuated with a few slingers and gooey butter cake, I can honestly say that I am looking forward to my green smoothies and bananas. I could not find a single ripe banana in St. Louis. They were all green and crunchy because "they look nicer on the shelf". Ridiculous.

I am trying to get back into things and will be taking it one day at a time. I plan on water fasting once a week and sticking to 811 with no overts for the rest of the week. One meal, one day, one week at a time. I refuse to let the scale dictate my mood for the day and plan on not focusing on the number but rather how I feel and being a good food role model to my daughter.

Jillian and I have a great support thing going on -- we email our days to each other and offer each other words of wisdom and general support when we are down or thinking about chugging a bottle of Hershey's chocolate syrup. I would be more than happy to include you in my emails. Because of the nature of some of our emails I would like to limit the group to those who are struggling with weight loss or have gone through the experience. There is nothing worse than a skinny person who has never been fat commenting on my day. We keep it simple. Weekly measurements -- daily food and exercise update -- things that made us feel great/bad and cool tips/recipes that we've discovered in our research and community sharing.

Take care everyone!
