Basic Skin Needs & the Foods that Work

In the past, we used products to take on certain skin challenges, which possibly contained aluminum and animal by-products. Not-to-mention, the products were contained in a plastic bottle! As we embark on a cleaner lifestyle, we then begin to look for 'cleaner' solutions in skincare. Conventional (busy, modern, or city) women like to use several different products on their face because our skin has different need, which can overload the skin. Consequently, a woman feels she cannot scrub with one thing to take care of three jobs; but when using food products, they help with many different skin needs. For example, coconut oil can be used on the face, body, and hair as a moisturizer. Another example, sea salt can be used for the face, body, teeth, and hair when used as an exfoliate, or to dry out oils on skin, body, and hair.

Below I have listed some basic skin & hair needs, and the foods that work to take care of these needs:

Cleanser: baking soda, oranges, lemons, limes, tomatoes, apples, onions and garlic (sounds weird to use on the face, but they contain antibacterial/antibiotic properties), strawberries, ALOE VERA
Toner: Apple cider vinegar, oranges, lemons, limes, ALOE VERA, cucumber or celery juice
Exfoliate: Sea salt, sugar, cornmeal, oats, ground nuts, wheat germ, ground flax seeds
Calming/cooling: mint, oats, Aloe Vera, (raw or vegan) almond milk
Moisturizer: Oil (coconut, olive, walnut, etc), avocados, Aloe Vera, bananas

Toothpaste recipe: 2 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp cinnamon, 2 tsp water made into a paste and applied to teeth (credit: Eco Beauty by Cox & Cox)

SKIN TIP: Not only is it important to eat clean (vegan) to heal your skin, remember to sweat, sweat, sweat through exercise or sauna. My hillbilly version of a sauna is to boil a pot of water on the stove, then hover over top of the boiling water, with a towel capturing all of the steam. I like to add apple cider vinegar to the water so it will get in my pores. Also, if you're up for exercise: do it outside. You can also go outside to tan for some vitamin D and extra serotonin!

  • Wow! Thanks for all the information! I like the hillbilly version of a spa, great idea :)

  • What about for the shower as soap and shampoo? I know the baking soda/ apple cider vinegar thing, but it gives me dandruff (well....all shampoos do it too)

    • I stopped using everything. No baking soda/vinegar. Actually this post is obsolete because I only use water/wash rag to clean my face (maybe some aloe vera or lemon/orange/lime juice).

      I also do not shave...

  • how do you use the aloe vera and witch hazel?  i'm a vegan of 2 weeks, and my skin is breaking out, but i hear witch hazel is really good!

  • I use castor oil on my face! It's so amazing! Make sure it's cold pressed castor oil otherwise it is not raw. Castor oil is a great facial and acne cleanser. I'll put a dab of castor oil on a pimple at night and wake up the next morning and it's gone!

  • Thanks for this!  I've been thinking of trying the toothpaste you mention here.  But question-- do you have to mix it fresh every time you brush?  Or can you mix up enough for the week and keep it in a jar or something?  Thanks!!

  • Thanks for all your info here!!!

  • Thanks Cassie, lots of great information here!
