Hi!:) I am from the Philippines - I have thick and wavy hair and I have dandruff problems. For the longest time, I have been using commercially manufactured anti-dandruff shampoo which somehow made me dandruff free. Early this year, I opted to use an organic and cruelty free shampoo and conditioner that are locally made in the Philippines. Please note that there no "anti-dandruff" in the label and they have no product of such kind. At the first few months of using the new product, I experienced the itch again. I was thinking maybe it is just the reaction of my scalp for using toxins for a long time. However, it is almost end of the year but I still have dandruff and it not getting any better, I tried using baking soda once in a while. Am I being impatient too see the result? Do you have similar experience during transition? What do you suggest I use?

Thank you!:)

I would appreciate any and all advice, even i I am unable to try all of it. Thanks for reading, I tried to put in any info that will help!

My face has a lot of pimples, blackheads, and blotches, plus it is dry and I don't know what lifestyle remedies or natural products might help. I want to stop wearing makeup but I have not been able to, I am too self conscious about this. I only wear foundation, and maybe eyeshadow but not even that very much.

I am not 100% raw yet, though I have been vegan for nearly 10 years and have been transitioning to raw for a few months (other psychological health issues unfortunately slowed me down - they are gradually healing). I still eat plain, fat-free, low-or-no sodium cooked vegan foods maybe a few times a week: things like steamed or baked potato, winter squash, other root veggies. Very rarely, bread or pasta, no fatty toppings. Otherwise I have tons of bananas, dates, citrus, etc., and a large lettuce/other tender green salad as often as I can afford, at least 4-5x/week, with blended fruit dressing usually. I have overts (1/2 avocado or 1-2 brazil nuts, for selenium) about twice a week. My intake tends to level off at 2000+ calories, and this satisfies me physically and mentally: I'm a relatively small female (under 5'4") so even though I NEVER restrict fruit cals, I don't feel desire or need for more.

Obviously my diet could still be much improved, but the thing is, my diet HAS improved a lot from when I had terrible bulimia as recently as this past fall and even in December. But as my diet improves, my skin gets worse! I cannot be detoxing this quickly; my transition has been far too gradual.

I try to get over 2L of water per day, but I really cannot handle much more, as I already go to the bathroom at least once per hour and as a busy person it's hardly practical already ...

I exercise in the gym (running/cycling and strength training) 3x/week and I walk a lot every day, as it's my only form of transport :) .
As for sleep, I'm still trying to heal my insomnia. I tend to wake up after only a few hours and have trouble getting back to sleep, so even if I go to bed on time (which I generally do), it's hard to get 8+ hours sleep.

I do live in a chilly Canadian climate, which could account for the dry skin, but even with a moisturizer cream it's flaky and gross.

I know I'm far from perfect, but I'm getting better, and I would appreciate your advice!

Photo on 2013-02-02 at 12.33.jpg

All along, these same subliminal messages make us feel unfulfilled, in the first place. From the time you wake, you're bombarded with fast food commercials telling you their meals will help you lose weight (or at least satisfy your hunger until 10am.) Then by noon, you have already seen 10 different TV commercials, magazine ads, website ads, or news articles begging you to buy weight loss pills, exercise DVDs, and a month supply of pre-packaged meals to lose weight. Then, when you come home from your stressful job, and bills piling up on your kitchen table, you skirmish through TV channels, just to come across advertisements for depression pills, boner pills, and anti-aging creams. On top of that, women are targeted in TV commercials for cleaning products (which are toxic, unsafe to ingest, and MUST be avoided by kids.)

With that being said, and all that aside, women and MEN are equally pressured into gender expectations; but We should try to be more critical of the products and companies that are targeting us, in the media. We do NOT want to be fooled by companies that are marketing off of our vulnerability. Not only that, we should not EXPLOIT ANIMALS WHILE DOING IT. Women should be especially critical of beauty companies that use animals to test their products as well as contain animal by-product. It's very easy to search if a company is cruelty-free, but I have taken some of the hard work out of that process, by providing you with a list of companies I found that TEST ON ANIMALS.

<colgroup><col width="256*" You can go to Peta's Beauty Without Bunnies section to find cruelty-free companies. Also, if you're unsure a company is Vegan or cruelty-free, check their website for the Cruelty-free logo (at right) or the Peta logo. You can also contact the company by email if they use animal derived ingredients in their products or if they test on animals.

However, I believe products are a waste of money, and can be substituted with healthy lifestyle choices. For example, you would not need cosmetics if you regularly sun-bathed, exercised, and ate a vegan diet.

Remember to read labels, ingredients, and be critical of the companies you are supporting. If a company is testing on animals or using animal derived ingredients, then they are supporting an industry of animal abuse, and you are too. It is best to avoid most products and large corporations because you do not want your hard-earned money going to a millionaire...
Check out my posts on living green, all-natural, and VEGAN here:

Basic Skin and Hair Needs & the Foods that Work

One way to be a green, earth-friendly chick (Part I)

One way to be a green, earth-friendly chick (Part II)

The Feminist's Diet & the Media still promotes unhealthy eating...

PLEASE CHECK OUT MY BLOG @ VEGANS LIVING OFF THE LAND.

I've had acne as long as I can remember. I've tried several very harsh treatments, the worst of which was accutane. I'm trying to find a natural way to reduce my acne and clear up my skin. I've never experienced clear glowing skin and am really dedicated to having it soon. My skin type is not overly oily or dry, just very acne prone. I'm sure this lifestyle will greatly impact my skin, but I'm looking for some way to treat it as well. I also tossed all my makeup, which was a huge deal for me. No more toxic chemicals and painting my face. This is my skin, covering it would be a shame. I just gotta find a way to make it healthy. It needs some serious healing.

I still don't have down a mix I am in love with though. I went through the greasy phase and now my hair looks great but where did my curls go? :) Did any other curly haired people experience this and what'd you do?

I think I am still detoxing though b/c my scalp is still itchy. It's only been a couple of weeks since I started this. But for months every week I put a mix of oils on my hair and scalp but that just alleviates it momentarily. Generally, raw coconut oil, raw hemp seed oil and a few drops of rosemary essential oil. It's not itchy to the point I scratch a lot and there are no flakes. It's mildly unpleasant but it'd be nice for it to be gone. I scratch a couple times a day maybe.

And what do you use to cleanse and then moisturize your body? Mostly to wash because I think I am in love with raw hemp seed oil. And I added tamanu oil to it for my face. For my face I do the OCM 2-3 times a week and then just water the rest of the time. So far so good. It has helped get rid of some of the superficial acne. I'd love for all the blackheads to be gone though. I do sometimes put fresh lemon juice on my face but can't tell if it makes a difference. But for my body my skin still feels so dry in some areas.

Thank you!

In the past, we used products to take on certain skin challenges, which possibly contained aluminum and animal by-products. Not-to-mention, the products were contained in a plastic bottle! As we embark on a cleaner lifestyle, we then begin to look for 'cleaner' solutions in skincare. Conventional (busy, modern, or city) women like to use several different products on their face because our skin has different need, which can overload the skin. Consequently, a woman feels she cannot scrub with one thing to take care of three jobs; but when using food products, they help with many different skin needs. For example, coconut oil can be used on the face, body, and hair as a moisturizer. Another example, sea salt can be used for the face, body, teeth, and hair when used as an exfoliate, or to dry out oils on skin, body, and hair.

Below I have listed some basic skin & hair needs, and the foods that work to take care of these needs:

Cleanser: baking soda, oranges, lemons, limes, tomatoes, apples, onions and garlic (sounds weird to use on the face, but they contain antibacterial/antibiotic properties), strawberries, ALOE VERA
Toner: Apple cider vinegar, oranges, lemons, limes, ALOE VERA, cucumber or celery juice
Exfoliate: Sea salt, sugar, cornmeal, oats, ground nuts, wheat germ, ground flax seeds
Calming/cooling: mint, oats, Aloe Vera, (raw or vegan) almond milk
Moisturizer: Oil (coconut, olive, walnut, etc), avocados, Aloe Vera, bananas

Toothpaste recipe: 2 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp cinnamon, 2 tsp water made into a paste and applied to teeth (credit: Eco Beauty by Cox & Cox)

SKIN TIP: Not only is it important to eat clean (vegan) to heal your skin, remember to sweat, sweat, sweat through exercise or sauna. My hillbilly version of a sauna is to boil a pot of water on the stove, then hover over top of the boiling water, with a towel capturing all of the steam. I like to add apple cider vinegar to the water so it will get in my pores. Also, if you're up for exercise: do it outside. You can also go outside to tan for some vitamin D and extra serotonin!

Thankfully it (usually) only has one ingredient; the kernel of the karite tree located in African savannahs. This is boiled and pulped down into said butter.

Shea butter is becoming rapidly more popular in the west (it has been used in Africa for 1000’s of years).

It’s great healing qualities are good news for skin sufferers and bad news for vivisectionists who are constantly testing newer and newer and more and more useless skin products.

I believe shea butter is the ultimate universal skin treatment and ideally should be promoted far and wide until toxic treatments such as hydrocortisone cream no longer exist.

RESOURCE AVAILABILITY SUSTAINABILITY

Its growth is limited to the central belt of Africa but it is a fruit product and so no plant needs to be uprooted for it to be harvested. A shea (karite) tree is said to take between 8 and 20 years to give its first harvest with 15 being a commonly stated average.

Compared to other products from Africa the fairtrade and organic aspects appear to have been much better managed. If you search for shea butter online most of the commercial results come back stating the shea butter is organic and fairtrade. On Ebay UK it is difficult to find any shea butter not claiming to be organic and fairtrade.

COST

For something that is organic and fairtrade you may be surprised to learn that shea butter is CHEAPER than equivalent conservative western products. Even looking at brands commonly available in British supermarkets it is cheaper. As with most things the more you buy the better value you get. On Ebay UK there is a significant difference between 100g and 500g. I get a 500g block when ever I need it and it lasts me months. At time of writing the same company was selling 100g at £2.40 and 500g at £5.99 and also 1kg at £10.72.

This bear in mind is pure raw shea butter which I recommend above any other. You can manipulate this to your desire unlike more expensive processed shea products. Some shea butter comes in tins and plastic tubs but if you order a 500g it usually comes just wrapped in see-through plastic wrapping and so is more environmentally friendly than rival products.

BEST DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Raw pure shea butter can be quite hard but will melt in your hands. However keeping it next to something warm like a radiator before use will ease application. For maximum effect it works at its when applied after bathing. If applied after bathing it will dry quicker but other wise applying a few minutes before going to bed is the best option. It can be applied to any part of the body without side effects.

POLITICS/BUSINESS

If use of raw shea butter were to become truly mainstream then clearly this could end with excessive exploitation and inferior products becoming more widely distributed. And of course there is the ultimate question if there is enough resource to sustain demand. Shea butter is already mixed with cheaper ingredients in many products which currently are more expensive presumably for packaging and production reasons. However mixing shea butter with a cheaper more common skin moisturising product like olive oil could be a good idea.

Shea butter farming is done and controlled mainly by women and often children assist as well as part of a non-exploitive family enterprise. This attracts support from international groups interested in helping these social groups. Whilst unfortunately multinationals are heavily involved with the shea market in western Africa in places such as Uganda the farmers still very much control the conditions under which shea is sold and produced. The American Shea Butter Institute has 5 grades for shea butter from A to F with F considered unsuitable for human use. Grade A is usually the only one that is recommended for use in pure form. The other 3 grades are used mainly as one ingredient in other products.

I believe if handled wisely Shea Butter could end a lot of animal testing and human grief that comes from a severely irritating ailment.

http://thesheaproject.org/index.html

Originally posted at the all vegan virtual nation of Havenheed! I'd really like longer and thicker hair.

As a kid I was forced to have my hair cut really short and I always hated how I looked with it.

I'm sorry if this post is superficial and if I appear hypocritical by posting this. But I can't hide that this matter is something that's been bothering me. I have nothing against short hair - some people look very good with short hair, but I personally was always unhappy with it.

I eventually want to be completely free of shampoos/conditioners because I've been reading of successful people here who live without those things and have thicker and faster-growing hair as a result. I want to be one of those people too. I wouldn't be surprised if my shampoo and conditioner (even though they're vegan with mostly natural herbs as ingredients).

I know I need to get the split-ends cut/trimmed and want to have good and harmless hair extensions, until my hair grows again. Does anyone here have experience with hair extensions, tressen, or weaving? If so, please tell me what method(s) you've used as well as naming the pros and cons.

Many thanks

PS: I posted the same post HERE.

There were also 3 times in my life where I could've had melanoma (skin cancer) - that's hereditary by the way because so many biological relatives have had it, some severe, some mild - but each time the results were (thankfully) negative.

Last year I was by the dermatologist, who planned an operation for me due to "questionable markings on my skin". I tried to reach the dermatologist beforehand by phone to ask to change the appointment to a more convenient date, but he NEVER went on and as a result of that, my appointment didn't take place at all.

The nurse gave me a prescription for this type of anti-fungus anti-bacteria thing for my Athlete's foot/fungus feet with strenuous instructions, which are hard to regularly follow as prescribed (for someone in my current situation). I never used it because I don't trust the pharma-system.

Though I do feel it is important for me to get my skin checked ASAP because of the markings on my skin, especially since I've noticed new ones have been appearing.

BUT, my main question here is in regard to my fungus feet/Athlete's foot. My skin in that area is horrible - dry, crackled, reptile-ish, and has recently been bleeding too due to me last week walking around in shoes (that aren't very goodfor casual days or long walks) because my casual shows were in my pension, which was closed last weekend.

Have any of you suffered severe cases of Athlete's foot/fungus feet? I've used it for my last 2 showers, and love it.

Was wondering if anyone else did, and if they know how long whole centrifugal juiced lemons last in the fridge? I figure it should last indefinitely because the sugar will just ferment into alcohol and then acid which is what I'm using to cleanse with in the first place. Maybe I'll just make lemon juice vinegar?! Sounds like a plan!
