Living shampoo-free, but still dying hair?

Hi everyone,

I dye my hair every 2 months black (Henna Black + Indigo - both products of "Khadi" and vegan/natural/chemical-free as well as healthy for the hair).

I've been reading posts by some people here who have beautiful hair and don't use shampoo. One example is using baking soda in the hair.

^^My one concern would be if the baking soda would interfere with my black hair colour (from Henna Black and Indigo) because I don't want to lose my black hair colour.

Also I'm keen in general to hear experiences - positive, negative, and neutral - from living a shampoo-free hygienic lifestyle.

Many thanks in advance. :)

  • Isn't beer really good for the hair?

    • I've heard of that, but I wouldn't want to use something nasty, which also smells nasty for my hair. But thanks for the feedback. :)

I think I'm going to try it with coconut oil because I've heard good things about it.

  • if you don't care to buy coffee or black tea, you can use them as rinses to dye your hair.

    • I've heard some negative feedback on that, though it my work for some people. Thank you though for your input. :)

  • I use black vegetable-based dyes on my hair (I'm naturally blonde) and use the no-poo method for washing and I haven't noticed any fading. Towards when it gets time to do my roots, i notice it has a bit of a red sheen in the light, but the black color is still nice and strong.

    • Hi Ashley, :)

How long have you been poo-free? How long was your hair when you began? How long did it take for your hair to go through the "transitions-phase"? Could you please tell me how your hair has changed since then as well as if your hair before that was thin or thick? :)

  • Baking soda pulls colour out of the hair. Yes.

I dye my hair red.... so I had to unfortunately go back to sulfate free shampoos because baking soda would have ruined my colour! I only wash my hair once a week anyways so I personally don't feel that the shampoo is making or breaking the condition of my hair. I use "Living Proof".
