I'm wanting to get back into it - but I've always wondered about the effects of diet on flexibility.

As for myself, I won't be a very good 'control' candidate - although I will note if I see gains in flexibility at a quicker rate.

Was anyone a yoga practitioner before transitioning?

Hello fruity-Yogi friends!

I am currently in San Marcos la Laguna, Guatemala and am about to start a one month intensive Yoga course. I need your advice in constructing a daily menu for myself that will work for me, while I live here for the next month or two. It seems like cooked carb proteins with a medium amount of carbs are much easier to get ahold of than are plentiful carbs. I'm in need of coming up with a menu as close to 80-10-10 as possible that will work for me. I would love to get any kind of input for what might work even if it has to be higher protein, but preferably not higher fat. It's important that I figure this out as I have been losing sleep some nights, waking up hungry. :( . I've been having anxiety-related sleep issues for 6 weeks now (finally getting better), unrelated to occasional undereating.

San Marcos la Laguna is a very small town with only a handful of fruit vendors. The raw fruits I have been able to find reliably are as follows: Papayas, pineapples, tiny watermelons, cantalope and honeydew melons (although not always fully ripe, so a risky buy), and raisins (expensive). Street vendors sell small quantites of fresh orange juice, so I might be able to pay more and get one liter from time to time. Unreliably, I can find ripe bananas. Sometimes the vendors will have 10-20 ripe bananas I can buy, and other days they will only have green, yellow, or not a single one to buy. Here's the cooked carbs I can reliably find: rice, big white potatoes, small sweet potatoes, oats, homemade whole wheat bread (made without butter and seems to have low salt), salt-free homemade corn tortillas, and sometimes popcorn. I have also found ground flaxseed for more omega 3s to offset the influx of omega 6s from the grains. I can supplement with iceberg and green leaf lettuce here and there. The cooked juices in the store are pretty terrible as well, so most likely won't be an option.

I am moving into the Yoga hostel today, where there will be a kitchen to use with a stove and refrigerator, but no microwave for easy reheating. The schedule for the Yoga course will be 10am-11:30 asana practice, 3:30pm-5pm asana practice, and 5pm-6:30 lecture, 5 days per week. On some days I will start at 9am to be a part of the silent meditation before the asana practice. I need help figuring out a menu and schedule for eating raw and cooking carbs. Sufficient protein seems to be the easy thing to get, but carbs seem more difficult. I'm beginning to see why Harley and Freelee supplement with refined sugar sometimes.
Given the course schedule I will have to eat my dinner after 6:30, but will be able to nibble on raisins or bananas during the lecture portion.

I know this is not an ideal situation, but I want to be able to experience this Yoga course and continue traveling while not being stressed out about how I am going to eat. As I've been coming off of weeks of chronic anxiety and sleeplessness, I really need any help or advice from anyone out there! (I wish I could also post this in the main discussion section to get more views and responses)

What and how would you eat if you were in my situation? Has anyone else out there been in a similar situation while traveling? If so, what changes to the diet worked for you, what didn't?

I'm sure there are things that I have forgot to mention and will check the thread when I can to add more input and answer questions. Please, give constructive answers. I really need help!
Thanks for reading everyone. :)

I just bought this book a couple of weeks ago and starting practicing the Pacifying Series. I love the series and feel awesome every time I do it. However, I have trouble performing number 34, the Side Raised Leg Pose. I have trouble finding the balance and tend to fall over a lot. At best I can hold this pose the wrong way by putting more weight on my bent leg side; this way I can feel the stretch in my straight leg, but I never hold it for very long because I can feel how unbalanced my weight distribution is. Also, I will sometimes lose the grip on my heel cup and fall over. I can perform the other two similar poses just fine (33 and 35), as well as the rest of the poses in the series. I only have trouble with number 34.

Are there any other poses that could give the leg a similar stretch, or any other modifications I could do to ease into performing the pose as intended eventually? Is there anyone out there who has used this book, gone through this series, and can perform this pose? Any advice on what has helped you with this pose would be of great help.

I love this book and plan to go through every series over the next few months. How did I know about this book?...the 30BaD Yoga forum. Thanks Yogis and Yoginis.

I learned Yoga from a guy I met in Ecuador last January and I have been practicing it as much as possible ever since. He had just been through training and I was taught the Sivananda series. It was something that I immediately took to and found myself to be pretty good at. Most importantly I am always humbled by its peaceful effects on my consciousness with every session.

In my search of "what should I do with my life?" I've come to the conclusions that I am great at teaching people, I love helping people move towards the path of health, and more recently, I love Yoga. So I want to teach it. I am going to attend as many different classes as I can to try and piece together which sect of Yoga is for me, and of course to pick the brains of the teachers (if they'll let me).

I'd like to hear from some of the Yoga teachers out there about your paths towards this profession/way of life.

How did you figure out which sect/progression of poses was the correct curriculum for you/your students?

What roles do both your personal experience and your hours of training play in your ability to obtain clients?

Which institutions/places to work have you found to be more difficult, stressful, or more enjoyable?

What are some tips you'd like to impart?

If some of these questions seem stupid or out of place, feel free to shoot them down. This will help me to ask better questions when I meet other teachers. I'm just basically looking for more information on this career path, so anything will help.

Have a fruity day, all.

I'm trying to get regular with practice - I'm attending a class every Sunday (Iyengar) but feel if I had a good dvd to follow it would really help me practice more often. I'm having a hard time calming the brain to commit to practicing everyday so that is why I REALLY need a very well structured video that can get me off to a good start.

Namaste

Hi Raw Yogis,

I wonder if anyone can help me with a question I have about Kundalini Yoga? I have just been given all of the Maya Fiennes Kundalini Yoga DVDs for my birthday. I started a couple of weeks ago with the dvd for the root chakra and then a couple of days later I followed with the dvd for the second chakra and so on for the first four chakras. I have really enjoyed these dvds and feel so amazing afterwards.

I just wondered if anyone knows whether you are supposed to do each chakra in turn one time each until the practice for the seventh chakra is finished and then start again with the root chakra, or are you supposed to work on the root chakra for a long period of time ( say every day for a week or a month?) and then proceed to the second chakra, do the same thing for a set length of time and so on until all chakras have been worked on for an equal length of time? It is not really explained on the dvds and all I know is that you are supposed to start with the lowest chakra and work your way up. Any advice would be great. Thanks,

Janet : )
