Autumn seasonal recommendations for a traveler

Hi Arizonians!

I'm going to be traveling to Phoenix in mid-October and I'm looking for some advice on what is in season. I like to keep it all raw. What seasonal fruits, veg, and greens should I look for in grocery stores at this time of year? (It will be interesting to see the difference in selection from what we get here in Chicago in the fall!)

Also, do you have any recommendations for grocery stores in the downtown area? I'm going for a conference and it would be great to have a go-to place with good selection and/or prices.

Just wondering why this group is so dead, AZ is a hot spot for vegans. I was just in Sedona this past weekend and I couldn't believe how many vegans I met in public. Is everyone using meet up or Facebook to organize meet and greets.

HCRV jobs

I have been following a HCRV (raw til 4 type vegan diet, i cheat sometimes) for almost a year now. A month ago I quit my job as a bartender at a sushi bar. The money was great but the it came with the price of my soul im afraid. I would be happy working at a vegetarian restaurant but I havent had anything that is worth my time monetarily and spiritually. I would appreciate any help, references, personal job experiences. Is there anyone in the Kingman Arizona area?

I have just started on my high carb raw vegan life and would love to chat with someone in the area. So far as I have found there are no farmers markets near me. If anyone knows of any and could let me know that would be awsome. There is a local bountiful baskets co-op that is fun and you can get some nice produce, just not in the quantities to sustain an all produce menu and unfortunately I am at work most days the baskets are available.

I am looking forward to the healthy journey and hope to meet like minded folks.

WinCo Foods

I checked out WinCo Foods recently and was quite pleased with the prices! I haven't been to Kodiak, so I don't know how it compares to that, but compared to regular grocery stores, the prices are great. I think I have the receipt somewhere in my house. But off the top of my head, I know that the bananas were 33 cents/lb. (compared to 57 cents/lb. at regular grocery stores). I saw NO organic fruit. Sad... But there was a fair selection of organic greens/ veggies.

A few other tidbits: they have stores in Mesa, Phoenix and Glendale. They are an employee owned company. They don't take credit cards, but they do take debit. You do your own bagging, which is great, because then you don't have to go home with all of those plastic bags... :)

Hi everyone!I'm hoping to be moving to Flagstaff in a few months to attend NAU and was wondering if any HCRVs lived there or around the area. It would be awesome to have some fellow fruit eating friends close by, and to know where the best places to get the best deals on fruits are! Costco is mighty handy, though seldom organic, with some great prices, but I'd still be grateful to learn of additional offerings, especially local ones.

How are you long-term Tucsonans staying well carbed? Any favorite farmers or greens/veggies you've found?

It's an Organic Blueberry Steal at Kodiak in Phoenix

I just dropped some info on my page about a CRAZY amazing deal on Organic Blueberries at Kodiak Produce in Phoenix!

Because their shipment got a ton of organic blueberries in (with just a few moldy ones every container- 8 containers = 1 box) they are selling them for $2 (!!!) a BOX.

They're crisp, delicious, and super, super, super worth the drive. Perhaps I just got such a great price because I frequent the place so often, but I doubt it.

Get yourself some before they're all gone!

I live in Peoria (like Arrowhead Mall-ish) and am looking for outdoorsy veg people who might want to split bulk fruits from Kodiak sometime or hit some hiking trails or attend one of my crazy veg friendly parties (which usually include some wild games of twister and a bowl or two of fresh watermelon punch yummm)
I also regularly host volunteer events, backpacking trips and some hippie dippie get togethers at local parks that involve getting Back to Nature...and I do a mean cartwheel ;) So if you're interested in any of that I'll be sure to let you know what's coming up :)

Since it gets haut here early, how does an 8am start time sound? You never can tell how many people will be there or if tables/cabanas will be available, but a good spot with a large shade tree is about 100 feet directly north of the children jungle gym. For recognition, I'll have in my possession a large 2 handled blue clothes hamper basket, in which I'll stash munchies and toys. And I'll be wearing a white Nike cap. Once we're collected, if we find a more suitable spot in the park, we can claim it.

One of the perks is that this park features the best farmers mkt in the city. Get there early for best selection. My fave vendor is Stella of Horny Toad Farms, set up on the far east side of the market row.

If this date works for at least 2-3 of us, I'll finalize and post it up officially. I know some of you have additional locations and times for gatherings in mind, so by all means shout them out for the future. And feel free to invite any peeps whose company you enjoy to any event. Nothing like nature, fresh food, and fun to spread the good word.
