I'm trying to go raw while in college! It's proving difficult, but I'm determined! I'm a dance student from a small mountain town. I love life and want to get the most out of my time here on earth!

  • Are you going to Purchase college?
Im right around the area, and went to purchase! Cheers I'd love to hear your story etc.
  • wow beautiful. thank you so much amanda!
this information is perfect..so vast.....it is a great help to me....thank you thank you!!
your schedule sounds incredible...9 to 9: this i would LOVE!
i moved to thailand, and there is not much in the way of dance classes upon the island...im keeping an eye out though.
im dancing by myself when i can but classes would be excellent.
i have been to some contact jams in cali and various places around..love them very much.
i will be looking out for things going on here, maybe even start something...until i get back to a place where it is more available..
    thanks again,
    love holi
  • Thanks for your words Amanda,
I haven't yet done a degree. Only an art foundation some years ago.
I've been dabbling in improv and aerial dance mostly, but I thought it may be helpful for me to go into technique training as a foundation, so then to branch off into somatic movement, intermerging dance/yoga, healing/performance somehow. It is difficult to figure out where this will lead until I jump into it.
I guess I;m looking for the perfect course that would teach technique in the fields that open to the somatic route - release and contact improv.?
This may be a whir of words, but I hope you're able to extract somewhat from it! If not, I will try again..:)

What kind of dance are you studying and how intensive is your course?
    Love, Holi
  • Hi Amanda,
How is your dance course going? Are you underway with a degree?
...I'm looking to delve to a deeper level of dance, but querying how to go about it in terms of study, as I have not done much formal technique training.
Do you have any pointers?...like a foundations course, or taking mass amounts of classes, or just jumping directly into a degree (if the possibility of acceptance arises!)
    Much love to you,
    Holi
  • Oh right, I've been raw since mid January and 811rv since March 2008. It's been terrific, I must say.
  • Actually, I'm not taking any nutrition classes yet, so it hasn't really come up. However, I am notorious in the dining hall for "the guy that eats a LOT of fruits and vegetables. I randomly meet people all over campus who say, "hey, I know you, I see you at Collins (Dining Hall) eating all that lettuce and tomatoes." Yea, so, people seem to be very interested in it, and I usually have groups of people staring at me while I'm eating but I usually just ignore them. What they don't know is that my real fruit stash is in my room, usually consisting of at least a crate of bananas and a nice amount of papayas at one time. To be 811rv at school you MUST shop at the grocery store, otherwise it's honestly just not doable. I tried it without grocery shopping and you'll go hungry, I guarantee. So, my advice is make sure you can get to a grocery store once a week, and if not, then when you go buy 2 crates of bananas instead of 1. I don't remember what else you asked so I'm going to check and then get back to you.
  • Briarcliff is a village that is technically within the town of Ossining. Do you know where that is? It's maybe 20 minutes away. I'm actually not at Indiana for music. Originally I was looking at the school for their recording arts program, but, after making it to the finals I ended up not getting in, but I think it was meant to be that way because I ended up getting 29 credits coming into the University and skipped a year, which is great. Plus, at that point, a lot of my music stuff was kind of going on the back burner and I was becoming much more interested in health and politics. So, now I have a lot of time and freedom to do so many things that I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. So, I'm creating a major called the evolution of human health, and I'm studying bioanthropology, nutrition, kineseology, and some core sciences like bio and chem, and it should be good. So how did you find purchase and what made you choose it? It is a terrific school for the arts.
  • Hey Amanda,
I'm also in college, so I can relate to the experience LOL. BTW, I live in Indian River County, the so called citrus capital of the world. Feel free to stop by when you have a free minute :)
  • woahhh, so are you in school at Purchase College???? If so, I grew up in Briarcliff Manor, but now I'm in college at Indiana University. I have a really cool friend that goes to Purchase, and I've actually played a few concerts with various orchestras in the concert hall, which I must say is superb.
  • HEY!

Yes, I am 100%. Since the last week in May... so I'm a little over 7 months. =)

My parents HATED IT at first. Well sometimes they still do. They freaked out at first, tried to force me to eat cooked food, and thought i was going to get over it........ but no! haha. Now they seem fine with it... they tolerate! They realized how much i truly care about it and how much its changed me. My mom still wants me to just be a cooked vegan (to save money or something) but I am trying to convince her that its cheaper to stay raw. =)

At first it was really hard knowing my parents did not support me. But then I realized i was doing this for ME. And I didn't care what anyone thought. My parents now buy most of my food and although there are a few complaints and concerns here and there, they are used to it now and seem fine with it. =)

Most of my friends were sketched out at first. But they soon learned a lot as I ate in front of them. AT First people thought i had an eating disorder. THEY THOUGHT WRONG... then they watch me eat 8 bananas in a meal and climb harder than them, and they take a step back. =) Now i have even "inspired" many others to go raw or simply to add more raw foods in their diet. YAY.

    what about you?
