Aloe consumption is an ancient practice. Where I come from people have been eating aloe long before david wolfe ever came along! Believe that!!
Aloe is like totally a staple in my everything! I have them all over my house, I feast on the jelly with my morning juicy fruit as often as possible (without blending it because I'm so damn hard-core), and it's my primary moisturizer especially for my face. Actually it's my only moisturizer for my face aside from an occasional shea butter mask. I rub the inside of the leaves I extracted the jelly from all over my face. I love the stuff!!!
All aloe is bitter. It's the slime that makes it so. Once you get used to it, it's not so bad. The texture of the jelly is amazing though. Great for the tummy. If you get really good at taking the jelly out with as little slime as possible, it's not so bitter. Save the slime for the skin.
I don't recommend that you have to eat it. Or that it's necessary for optimal health. But it is definitely beneficial if you're interested in adding it to your lifestyle.
I would think aloe would be considered toxic. I actually called an aloe grower once to see if it was grown organically. He told me they don't spray because no animals or insects will even touch the stuff. There's no calories in the stuff and i can't imagine just trying to bite into aloe as it is.
I have it in my smoothies regularly. I take the skin off of course and slice out the jelly and blend whatever fruit and greens that I have.
I can't taste it and of course I don't notice the texture in the smoothies :P
Save the skin though! After I shower I rub the inside of the skin all over my body and massage it in :)
I've eaten it, but I only ate some for it's supposed benefits, not because I actually craved it. Don't think I will ever crave it...when I had it, I peeled the skin off so it wasn't bitter and blended it into a fruit smoothie. David Wolfe convinced me to do it haha. Something about ormus.
