Fell off the wagon, really bad idea!

Hi there

I'm a 26 year old girl who started this raw-vegan lifestyle earlier this year. It went great, I loved the lifestyle. Until i went abroad to live with familiy for a few months. I tried to keep up with the lifestyle, working out daily and eating right. But found it to be very difficult for a lot of reasons.
Even tho I didn't go back to meat, I started eating fat-foods, chocolate and other ****** stuff. It went out of control! The 12 kgs I lost I gained back really fast!

I've been in a lot of pain recently, and my doctor just told me today that I have a gallstone.
This opened my eyes again.

Reasons I could have gotten it is:

- Being overweight
- Bad eating-habits, lots of fatty foods
- Lost weight fast
- Lost a lot of weight, and then gain it back again

I am not allowed to eat anything that contains fat anymore, or sugar for that matter (since I am a chocolate-addict), fruit sugars is fine. I must wait a few days to get a scan so that I can go to surgery and remove my gallstone. So I'll be in agony for some days.

Now, please learn from my experience, I don't wish this upon anyone!
Do not fall off the wagon like I did, don't eat lots of fatty foods. Chocolate and coca cola (etc) is poison to your body.

I am now only living off bananas, it is litterally the only thing I can eat that doesn't upset my stomach too much. So it is back to banana-island for me. Lesson learned!
I'm gonna stay on this lifestyle now. Fingers crossed!

  • That's true, just be careful because sometimes cooked food is a "gateway food" to want to eat more cooked/fat/salt/junk haha. At least, that's how it usually is for me.
  • My gall stone/gall bladder story:

My 89 year old grandfather had numerous gall stones and an infected gall bladder.  They removed a few stones with a laser then sent him home.  He barely made it out of the hospital alive from not one but several mistakes. Never leave a loved one alone in a hospital!

Anyway, I was told by the M.D. that he probably would not live through all the procedures.  When he got home my grandfather agreed to drink about 2 measured cups of organic celery, beet and carrot juice 4 times daily and not eat anything else.  He did this for 3 days straight then back to his SAD for 2 or 3 days then back to juice for 5 days straight then back to his SAD for another week until his next out patient appointment.  At that appointment they informed me that there were no more stones and no infection.  I told the M.D. what we did to get rid of them and the M.D. just looked at me blankly and walked away.

  • Same thing happened to me! I'm just getting back into the lifestyle today. After eating junk I just couldn't take it anymore. I felt like crap. Thanks for the advice and I hope all is well!

  • yes and no, and it doesn't have to take years for a gallstone to develope. it can be several reasons to why they appear. Read about it. Whats true for you, might not be true for others.

  • Just an idea if you are interested. You could try a Liver/Gallbladder Flush. Look up "The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush" by Andreas Moritz. I did it once and I released some gallstones as well as some liver bile stones(500+)- they recommend doing one a  month.. till you are stone free for 3 consecutive flushes. It is completely pain free, at least it was for me and everyone else I read about. It's very cheap and you can do it in the comfort of your own home. I am not sure what you think of that kind of thing. It is definitely something you should look into instead of getting your gallbladder removed. Hope this helps. It definitely encouraged me to stay the course. I am very new at this, but I am loving it! thanks for sharing. Robin

    • Thank you. My mom was talking about something similar. She had surgery to remove her gallbladder and ever since she has had problems with gaining weight. I heard that you are likely to gain weight and have difficulties losing weight after removing the gallbladder. So this is absolutely something of interest! Thank you for sharing! :)

  • I am so sorry that happened to you!!  Thanks so much for sharing though, you've saved me from doing the same thing for sure.  I had no idea gallstones could happen like that.  I'm hoping you will recover quickly.  The good news is fruit is lovely, there could be worse sentences than a beautiful tasty diet =)

Wishing you a fast and full recovery!!

    • Thank you so much :) I'm really glad I could help!

Yeah, I had no idea myself. I definately would have tried harder to keep it up if I knew.
That's why I wanted to tell my story here. I've never ever been able to lose that much weight before, on any fad-diets, this lifestyle is really the best thing I could ever have hoped to come across :) Thanks to Freelee's Youtube channel.

Yes, good news is that i can continue my diet, or my new lifestyle. But still have to be careful, not losing the weight too fast.

  • Do more sports. When you stay active and have very specific fitness goals...even a day or two of mistreating your body you will feel it in your results. This is a good thing, because on a basic level we all lack discipline/willpower.

When people are not very active, since they aren't really using their bodies, or in tune with their bodies, they can eat crap food, take drugs, not get good sleep, etc, for a long time...and they sometimes don't really notice a difference. They basically get used to feeling like **** and feeling like **** becomes "acceptable" to them.

In my opinion the only way to avoid "falling of the wagon" is not to remind ourself of anything, or try to reason with ourselves, that is just trying to relying on will power, and  that is exactly how everyone FAILS.

IMO the one way to beat the cravings/emotions/bad habits, etc is to put ourselves in a situation where we aren't relying on will power in the first place. Make it more easy, more convenience, less stressful, less emotional, less work, to follow the high carb low fat path.

A few examples of what I mean by "not relying on willpower":

Rather than "giving yourself 10 good reasons why you shouldn't eat the chocolate in the cubbard!"-->Remove all garbage food from  your house completely so this becomes a non issue.

Rather than struggle with what to order when you go out to eat with your friends at a restaurant youve never been to!!! --> Invite your friends to your place, make vegan friendly food, maybe eat out less as you make the transition, get a vegan cookbook while you're at it.

Rather than have a huge internal struggle dealing with family members-->Make friends with vegans, in real life, and online, don't argue with anyone at all.

Rather than look at the scale as a gauge of your worth as a human being and riding an emotional rollercoaster because we mostly made of water and our weight fluctuates!!!---> Focus on long term health, longevity. Focus on athletic performance. Focus on progress, and the steps you need to take.

Set goals, pick up a few role models of people who can do things which you can't figure out how they got there, follow them, support others....

We all have a tendency to feel like our lives are a Greek drama of epic proportions, but I feel the trick isn't to win the battle but to find way to make peace with ourselves and simply our lives so there is no way for a struggle to even happen in the first place.

Eliminate the obstacles that trip us up completely, instead of trying to navigate around them. Don't trust ourselves, assume the worst of ourselves, but still set ourselves up to succeed regardless of the circumstances around us. Rather than challenge ourselves to "be smarter" the next time we are on the verge of making a poor decision, find a way so that next time we won't have to make a decision at all.

-Store frozen fruit in the freezer ready to blend (no need to eat out if I always have food to bring to work with me)

-Eating sufficient calories (no cravings means no desire to cheat)

-A plan B handy at all times! If I get some crazy cravings I can go across town to the raw food joint and grub hard! (Once in a while it happens, be prepared instead of being surprised)

-Train your tastebuds. (Since I cut out all salt and over fats...lettuce tastes better than steak ever did! You'll never "cheat" if the healthy stuff tastes better than the junk)

    etc etc etc

Strategies for success are important. 10 years from now a lot of people who are currently vegan will be eating crazy **** and their health will be messed up, because this is a very hard lesson to learn. That is why most humans spend their lives "falling off the wagon" and "getting back on", slowly killing themselves. They can't stand the thought of putting restraints on their own behavior, but sometimes making firm rules and disciplining ourselves is the only way to succeed.

    • Awesome response! I am taking notes as well;)
