Check out this video. This guy from Australia found a 2,000 yr old fruit forest in the desert in Morocco and has been recreating them.
This video is in the extremely arid land in the dead sea valley in Jordan. He is growing self sustaining forests that create their own soil and hold moisture.

No problem. Stuff like this needs to be seen by the masses. I thought it was crazy when the Jordanians sent him an email saying they had a problem in the compost/mulch piles. Attached was a picture of a mushroom. Evidently they had never seen a mushroom because there's never been enough humidity for mushrooms to grow there.
So here is one of the world's possible answers to the problem of desertification. Grow fruit forests!
