Overeating? Feeling sick..can't seem to stop.

Hey friends! I have been on this lifestyle for 2 months and I am having problems overeating to the point of being in pain. Right now I have a huge banana smoothie in the morning, about 6 or more bananas and water, sometimes carob. I usually feel good after this but once lunch time comes I sometimes have another banana & date smoothie..where I feel so full but still hungry if that makes sense. I feel as if I am not getting enough to eat nutritionally? Does that make sense? So I sometimes will make a baked potato or have a huge salad and that seems to fill the void, except then I get horrible stomach pain from being so full..and I look pregnant and feel sluggish. Then when dinner comes out I usually have another smoothie or another huge salad with potatoes.. Did anyone experience this when starting out? Am I just eating too much food? Please share some tips with me.. I don't know if its emotional binging or I am just not getting enough nutrition (which I doubt!). Sorry I posted this in the RV chat..but I am more Rawtil4 right now because I am a newbie and its winter here in Canada...I couldn't figure out which forum to post this in...

  • Six bananas is not very much; many people eat 12-15 for breakfast.  you just need to get used to the volume of food required to get enough calories in.  Track your calories with cronometer or whatever calorie counter you want, and try to weigh the edible portion of your food rather than using volume.  Volume is inaccurate and it's very easy to think you're eating more calories than you actually are - a lot more sometimes.  I would also pay attention to food combining, which might be contributing to bloating for you.  Find out what percentage of your calories are coming from protein.  Protein satiates, so you could always up your protein to closer to 10% by eating more greens (min 1 lb/day).  Greens are easier to get in when you include them in smoothies.

  • I wish i had an answer for you. I went through this it was like i was starving to death even tho i was stuffing my face. Its something unsettling about how high carb foods land in my stomach. I hate to just say it but the foods did not satisfy me or satiate my hunger at all. 5000 calories and stuffed i'd quit eating because I felt sick before i felt satiated.

In time it passed and I adjusted. I tried diff avenues along the way. sometimes protein powder or something would help slow me down but I did not like how that left me feeling.

Starches in the evenings offered some relief as well. But it was not easy. For me it passed its good to finally hear others with this issue I was begining to think i was crazy.

  • when i used to eat cooked food i had the same problem , I dont really know what it is but I personally associate cooked food=cravings or over eating fats= cravings , now that im 100% raw vegan the problems seems to have stopped.

Someone else feels that fat or cooked food gives you cravings??

  • I am a guy, but have also felt pregnant and incapacitated at times. I will share my personal experience, and thoughts with you. Take it "as is".

I find it is easier to overeat on cooked food. I am used to filling up on a large quantity of sweet fruit, which in general, is more nutrition, sweeter, higher in fibre and water. so when I eat cooked food, it won't satisfy me as quickly, and I will end up eating past the point of comfort. I will still have room in my stomach, or I haven't triggered my "full up" signals, most likely, I suspect, due to the lack of sugar, but possibly due to the lack of other nutrients.

There is also the issue that if I have prepared something for myself (this includes both smoothies and cooked foods), I feel I have to finish the whole thing in one sitting, or am more likely to try and stuff it down me if I think it's not worth saving for later or that it won't be as fresh.

I do also find I can be hungry even after I no longer feel like eating a particular food. I might have had my fill of "sweet" foods for a particular meal, or for the day, and I will still have cravings for savoury/salty foods. For me, the way to satisfy these cravings might not be to eat more food, but to eat greens/vegetabls. I may also simply be craving variety. It is for this reason that I don't think I could do a mono-island. I can eat 20 bananas, and then be sick of them, and want some other fruit such as oranges.

I wouldn't assume that you're getting enough nutrition just because you're eating some sweet fruit. You may be eating enough calories or volume, but at the same time, not getting enough nutrients. Bananas, and especially dates, have relatively small micro-macro nutrient ratio compared to juicer fruit. Also, the quality of fruit can vary.

Quote by Dr Douglas Graham, auther of 80/10/10 (http://foodnsport.com/blog/Interview-with-Dr-Graham.html):

Many who have read your book are choosing to leave out greens because they are not drawn to them and want to just be "fruitarian." Any thoughts on this?

They are not following 811 at that point. I have not seen long-term fruitarians succeed, and have seen huge numbers of them fail (and too many die) over the almost four decades since I first started my dietary journey. My thoughts? DON'T do it. And certainly don't associate fruitarianism with 80/10/10

To sum up, this is what helps me to avoid feelings of overeating and hunger, and the paradoxical feeling of being full but still being hungry:

    • Eat some, or ideally, as many greens/vegetables/cucumbers as I care for in-between fruit meals
    • Incorporate some juicer fruits into my diet, such as oranges/melon
    • Have available a variety of fruits at all times, in case I get sick of one particular fruit
    • Eat whole fruits and veggies vs smoothies
    • Chew my smoothies
    • When preparing food, especially when cooked food, be mindful of how much I am eating, and how much I have already eaten during the day. Get into the practice of storing what I don't feel like eating for when I do feel hungry.
    • Stay hydrated, but ideally drink water prior to a big meal instead of afterwards. I find drinking a large load of water after a large meal can give me acid reflux. What I may do instead, is slowly sip water, until I feel that I have more room in my stomach. Again, this is more of a problem when eating cooked foods and denser fruits.

    I hope this helps :)

  • too many water in the smoothies perhaps?

  • Hi I have that full but hungry feeling a lot too. I find that a good break between meals helps when I've eaten a lot and feel full. I also look bloated after dinner every night but I think that's normal for a newbie to this lifestyle. I have been hcrv for three months now. I use dates to take the hunger feeling away. They don't take up much room in your stomach but are rich in taste and calories. So I eat like this... Breakfast banana ice cream(just frozen blended bananas) I put 3-4 dates in it and I also eat a large serving of berries or grapes with it. Then lunch is a huge salad and another kg of grapes or berries, then I snack on berries or grapes while I make dinner which is another huge salad with raw vegan dressing, sometimes steamed veggies or potatoes. After dinner I have another serving of banana ice cream and dates. I feel better- less bloated and my digestion is better- on fully raw but I too live in a very cold climate, fruit is expensive and sometimes I have to do raw till 4. I leave about 5-6 hours between meals. This is due to my work schedule, but I have noticed that if helps with the bloating etc. I can't eat more than 3 bananas in one meal without feeling sick, that's why I add the grapes and berries because these are easier for me to eat a lot of. Dates are very expensive here so I can afford more than 5-6 at a time. Sometimes I buy fully natural dried figs instead because they are cheaper. I hope this helps you, I am by no means an expert, just offering my experiences so far.
  • haha, I don't know what it is but we have the same issue.. I had several days after Christmas where I ate to the point of pain, discomfort and intensely sweating (too much pasta then adding lots of water before, during and after...obviously the pasta expanded in my stomach)... I do believe I have stretched my stomach since then. Maybe it just has to do with adjustment? Maybe you are used to eating less in terms of volume?

  • You described what you're eating, but not the associate calories. Are you tracking your clorie intake on cronometer.com? Knowing those numbers would be helpful. It's entirely possibly you need well beyond the minimum 2500 recommended for females. Many ladies on here are doing anywhere from 3000-5000+ depending on different individual needs. I would say don't worry, but it'd be helpful if you could tell us your typically daily calorie intake.

  • Also, it's been really cloudy here the past 2 weeks so I am wondering if the cold cloudy weather is making me feel down and prone to binging?
