Strong Chemical Taste in Melons?

I know what you're thinking - what's an idiot doing buying melons in the winter? I saw these conventional non-irradiated cantaloupes on sell the other (that in itself should have been sketchy enough) but I craved having a sweet melon breakfast so I bought them. This morning I opened on up since it smelled good and looked ready to go. At first when I tasted it, it was like "Yum...tastes like grapes and...nail polish?"

I just wanted to know if anyone else has had that experience before. It doesn't even have to be melons. I accidentally bought a bag of non-organic apples the other day as well and it had the texture of a wax apple and the taste of cardboard... I know that it's probably not going to be as nutritious and satisfying as its organic counterpart, but how bad exactly it is for me to be tasting the chemicals?

  • I've had exactly the same thing with UK cantaloupes (organic ones) - I just go for the other types now.

  • Non organic melons in the winter are nasty. Even knowing that I will still probably try a few this snowy season.

  • Oh I'm with you! Just fell into the trap of nail polish melons. I didn't even finish half of it and my throat felt inflamed almost.. This happens to me all the time with all fruits, I try to buy organic as much as possible though that really isn't attainable here. Organic and non-organic,most of the fruit are of poor quality and I'm lucky to find something that tastes good. Have come across all kinds of weird stuff, cardboard apples,chemo-bananas,dishcloth peaches, perfume mangoes,and.. my all time "favourites" - salty, dry oranges!!

At least I can get good local produce, but there isn't much variety.. It'll take a while to figure it out. Sigh.

    • Mmmm, subtle tones of dishcloth...how delicious! ;)

Do you eat dates? Usually the organic ones are good quality and more reliable than other fruits.

      • :D too bad they're one of my favourite fruit though. Missed them when they were in season, only got a couple of good ones :(

And yes,I do eat a lot of dates - love them- they're easy to find,(even in the bigger stores that sell cardboard fruit),come in 1kg boxes.. Usually pick up as many as I can find every time I go fruit-hunting.. I think I buy out all of the dates that can be found in this town haha

I've actually noticed that not many people taste the chemical stuff in fruit though. My non vegan friend just offered a nail polish melon a while ago.Apparently, she loves them and eats them often. ahh. wish she'd discover the joy of what REAL fruit taste like..

        • I agree, your senses become sharper on lfrv. I can no longer tolerate the smells of regular cleaning and personal care products. Some people think I'm being paranoid, but they don't realize how obnoxious it is to me.

  • Yep, conventional produce does often have a nail-polish taste. I only eat organic, but when I was on vacation one year I bought some watermelon which was labelled organic and turned out not to be...I only ate about half of a large melon (as it didn't taste good to me) but I had the worst headache for about a week afterwords, nausea, sickness, and exhaustion. You definitely pay for eating food that's been sprayed with poisonous chemicals. I'd say stick to organic winter fruits even if they are limited in variety. But I so get the temptation of melons!
