~~~~~~~~~~water~~~~~~~~~~
After the Raw Retreat this past week I have been enlightened by Harley's talk about water. I have since learned that many of my re-occurring problems have been due to dehydration. I figured, as a raw low fat vegan I was able to not drink water because I was getting so much from my food. But I have since found that after concentrating on hydration for only about a week now (~3 litres a day, no more than 1 litre at a time), I have seen some wonderful improvements!I have been experiencing these tiny bumps on my face, back of my arms and legs for some time now. But since adding more water, my skin is silky smooth, even after a fairly dehydrating meal.I have also been struggling with a pain in the chest area when I ate melon, grapes, apples, etc. For a while it began to worsen and I was getting this pain after almost anything - even salad!! I am happy to say that today I half of a large melon with no pain!Other symptoms that I experience from dehydration are:- reddening of the face when I exercise hard- moodiness- slow bowels- less tolerance for high temperatures- nausea when I did drink water- inability to eat lots of high calorie/dry food, such as bananasThe inability to eat many bananas was leading me to under-eat. Dehydration is probably a reason why some people struggle to eat sufficient calories on 811. It may make them reach for the avocado (since it has no sugar) and then dehydrate themselves even more, causing a continuous cycle.I would like to mention that during this time, I thought I was hydrated because my urine was clear. But I was ignoring other signs. Dehydration can show up as pain in the body:Drug companies manufacture a class of chemicals that are strong antihistamines. Histamine is a brain chemical whose action the drug industry is determined to block when there is pain. Most strong pain medications are antihistamines. There are many kinds produced by different companies. One variety is called Tagamet. It is now a non-prescription drug that you can buy off the shelf.I set out to research why histamine is the target when pain medications are used.I discovered that histamine is a vital chemical messenger in the brain. Histamine has a most important function not written about in medical textbooks. It is in charge of water intake and drought management in the body. It is less active when the body is fully hydrated, and becomes increasingly active when the body becomes dehydrated. This was the connection I was looking for. In short, histamine produces pain when an area in the body is suffering from drought!You need to recognize your own particular early indicators of thirst. Not everyone is the same. You must learn what can happen to your own body when it becomes dehydrated. Not every body registers drought in the same way. Depending on where the drought has settled, the initial indicators are different in different people.Other conditions related to dehydration:I have seen water completely reverse conditions such as: Asthma. Angina. Hypertension. Migraine headaches. Arthritis pain. Back pain. Colitis pain and chronic constipation. Heartburn and hiatal hernia. Depression. Chronic fatigue syndrome. High cholesterol. Morning sickness. Overweight problems. Even heart problems needing bypass surgery.All these disease conditions responded simply and permanently to water. Ordinary water. Any water you feel comfortable to drink. Clean tap water is as good as any.Why just following thirst is no enough:If you are thirsty, it means your cells are already dehydrated. A dry mouth should be regarded as the last outward sign of dehydration. That’s because thirst does not develop until body fluids are depleted well bellow levels required for optimal functioning.Monitor your urine to make sure you are not dehydrated:A hydrated body produces clear, colorless urine.A somewhat dehydrated body produces yellow urine.A severely dehydrated body produces orange or dark-colored urine.Because, in dehydration, 66 percent of the water loss is from inside of the cells in a drought-stricken area. 26 percent of the water loss is from the fluid environment of the cells in the area, and only 8 percent of the water loss is from inside the blood vessels of the area. The blood vessels close up and don’t show they have lost 8 percent of the total loss. This is why blood tests are useless in the diagnosis of symptom-producing drought in the body.Your Body's Many Cries for Water
  • Hey people.
    Please don't me asking this question..
    What kind of water do you drink?
    Message me this answer to my inbox,
    If you dont mind. :P
  • Great post Julie! I am working on this and sun exposure as well.
    • Wow - congratulations on going raw in such extreme conditions! It seems like Doctors are often the last people to know about what is healthy for everyday living, doesn't it, lol... They may understand extreme issues, but for daily life? Hmmm, not so much, in my experience. You might look into contacting Dr. Fred Bisci at http://www.fredbisci4health.com/. He does personal consultations. Dr. Graham, of course, too. Both are long-term raw foodists.
      I find I can drink 2 liters easily, first thing in the morning while I check email. I'll also drink a couple more glasses throughout the day. I feel much much better, since beginning that practice!
      Harley = Durianrider, one of the founders of this site. Check out his videos on youtube, too.
  • Very interesting topic.
    Can someone please explain to me how drinking a gallon of distilled water a day is by any means what "Nature intended"?
    I haven't seen any Primates going to the river every 10 minutes to have a sip. I also haven't seen any distilled water springs.
    Did we evolve so quickly and have to drink loads of distilled water? Then maybe we also should cook our fruits and veggies? Don't think so.
    Eat LOADS of juicy fruit and drink when your body tells you to.
    It is obviously different for people doing sports because animals don't do sports. They don't race for 24h for fun :)
    So I do drink when running more than 10k.
  • wow J,
    you've seen some serious benefits by increasing.....I may drink some more tomorrow because of this, or Maybe I wont, heheeh.
    I admire how you are no longer 'in between' on the water topic...soon I hope to know for myself.
    hope to see you on the beach tomorrow,
    D
  • I didn't read all of this thread but personally I urinate at least 14 - 20 times a day without consuming even one drop of water. I live in Southern California and do not do a lot of activities (at least for the last 12 months).
    If I drank water I feel I would spend the entire day at the toilet.
    Right now I am in Thailand and I am doing a lot of walking during the days and I need to drink a lot of water, about 1.5 liters a day, but this is due to the heat and activity.
  • Hey Alison, Julie might know how much exactly since she's fasted but certainly a liter a day would not be enough. I drink 1-2 litres in the morning on days I eat. if I do a short fast I'm drinking water virtually all day long. I'd be willing to down a wad of cash that you were dehydrated, sorry to say :/
  • Wow. I will go drink some more water right now! I guess Grandma was right about water; she carried a full bottle around all day like it was permanently attached, and always said, "Your pee should be clear. Drink more water."
    Love you Grandma, I knew you were right!
  • Yet again great post Julie!
  • heehee!
