Odd convo in class today with teacher

Today in my environmental science class, we were watching a slideshow presentation from our teacher and some slides came up from the new subject, the title was 'how meat is produced'. She quickly clicked through the whole subject to the next one.

the class: what??

her: 'I don't want to see that stuff, if I did I wouldn't eat meat'

the class: 'then why do you eat it?'

her: 'because I LIKE MEAT!'

wow, this was crazy for me to see.

I seen some of the slides and it was like about dairy, eggs, meat, all of it. i couldn't believe all of it was on a slideshow shown at school. It talked about all the cruelty and everything, one slide said 'The Meatrix' i thought that was pretty cool. I wish she would've shown it. Then she said 'I don't want to show you guys that stuff and then you be afraid to eat meat' WHAT omg. this is so frustrating. this is exactly the problem, keeping people ignorant to the truth!

  • Interesting.  It's like she inherently knows what's right, she just doesn't want to admit it to herself yet.

Perhaps you could gather some of your classmates with whom you have a good relationship, and say something like: "you know, Ms. Teacher didn't share the whole story with us today.  Wonder what it was she skipped over?  Let's check out that Meatrix thing...."  (that's a video, BTW, you should be able to find on youtube or via google)

Play off that inner drive we all have that if somebody says we "can't/shouldn't," then that's exactly what we want to do :)

If that goes well, another excellent animal reality vid is "meet your meat."  And of course the ultimate vid is found for free at www.earthlings.com.

You have to really know your audience for this one though, as it's disturbing in the extreme.

    • yes! its like she knows that its wrong but doesn't want to see it because it would become too much of a reality and it'll ruin her 'precious meat'. the meatrix thing is kinda cool but its just against factory farming not really against eating animals, I feel like thats what the slides were about, just mainly factory farming. but the fact that she said 'I wouldn't eat meat' like even people in my class were like saying things like 'hey you know what they do with male chicks.. they grind them up' like people kind of know. they even showed food inc. in nutrition class once.. but food inc is like a Disney movie compared to earthlings.. that really shows the disturbing reality and makes people think and then actually act on it.

  • greetings michaela! and a belated welcome to 30bad!

your teacher's behavior is puzzling, but interesting. she seems to have certain items in her presentation, but doesn't want to show them. she also gives a blatantly absurd argument for not showing these to you.

i wonder if she's covertly encouraging people to find out for themselves.

here is a post which provides some published evidence on the addictiveness of corpse industry products:

also, regarding your statement "keeping people ignorant to the truth!", you may find this item of considerable interest:

    • thanks! I know it was so odd! i don't think she was trying to have people find for themselves she just didn't want to show them because she didnt even want to see herself!

      • ya you're probably right michaela.

interestingly enough, the "i like corpse" is about the only valid excuse that exists. they fail on health, environmental and ethical grounds completely despite the most bizarre rationalizations. you can see some of these weird fallacies if you want here:

Fallacy in Animal Rights and Vegan Discussions

however, with "i like corpse" there is no fallacy!

but that's only because there is no logic either. :D
