Winter bike riding?

Anyone experienced with this?  It just got cold and it snowed briefly today... i'm still riding my bike around but the prospect of riding around with ice and snow on the ground intimidates me. esp since i live in montreal, which is a very hilly place. and drivers here generally hate bikers.  but all the same, the idea of not riding my bike for months scares me even more!!!!   I have a pretty old street bike, has sort of thick tires, one gear... should i change the tires and/or breaks?  or do i need a new bike altogether?  and since i ride it to school i would have to leave it outside for hours at a time - is this okay?   should i put protection on it while it's sitting outside? (like  a plastic bag)

also my lock has been acting funny- i think it's been freezing a little and it's hard to tug free.  how to prevent things from freezing like this?

please share your winter biking experiences!!!

  • Hey you're rocking an oud in that pic?? soooo cool!! I find taking the bike in at night keeps the brakes and lock from freezing. Untested idea - I'm going to start carrying a lighter to heat up my key for frozen lock syndrome. I think you're better off w a cheap bike. You're going to do some minor damage to it prolly...

A plastic bag over the seat will help wet butt syndrome on those wet days...

Wear a helmet, be extra careful...I do a ski mask, a hat and then my helmet...

Back in college I cracked a guitar when I slipped on the ice...so leave the oud at home if you can, or really pad the heck out of it...

Here's an article - I've been considering snow tires  http://www.ehow.com/how_2123693_road-bike-snow.html

I think its really fun biking in the winter - kind of relieves the winter blues...just gotta dress for success! LOTS of layers...

    Happy Biking!

  • I heard Montreal was terrible for cycling around. So I wouldn't bother in the cold. lol
    • nooo lol that's what everyone is telling me but i am in denial. i guess walking might be a nice change
  • Yeah, I have experience of my bike tipping over when going round a corner, last year. lol. This was on the pavement. No-one got hurt. Not even me. Was a shock though at first but I laughed after a few seconds. I was going quite fast so that was stupid. I don't have any expert advice. Just be careful. You should be fine. Probably won't be as fun though. I wouldn't ride my bike up a steep hill if I knew it was slippery. Just use some common sense I guess. See how it goes. Good luck. Stay safe.
    • hm, yeah the thing is there is no way really to stay off the streets. there are bike paths along many of the streets, but not all of them... and there's no way to avoid hills. hm. maybe i'll have to compromise and walk on the really bad days. or i'll walk my bike part of the way.
