What do you feed your cat?

I just got a kitten!!! She is so sweet and I hope to be taking her to college with me in the fall as my college allows pets. I want to make homemade food for her
I googles it but was wondering if anyone has any tips/tricks/recommendations in terms of content, prep, doing it on a college student budget/environment

Thanks!

  • I've heard that cats really can't be vegan biologically. I have nothing to back that up, it was just passed along to me... the suggestion was to add ground up egg shells to whatever you feed the kitties to replace the nutrients they'd usually get from eating bones.

I just took in a starved stray kitten today and fed it some salmon from my neighbor's fridge ~ the kitten was after the bones almost more than the meat! crunch crunch snarfle crunch... :)
    • Thanks that's a great idea with the egg shells. My kitty is currently in a different home while I am in my first semester of school since I ended up not being able to bring her yet :( But once she is living with me again I'm going to try the egg shell thing. muchas gracias!
  • Whatever you use, make sure it has taurine in it! I rescued a cat who had not been fed properly as a kitten (vets at the rescue organization figured he'd been fed dog food) and he had lots of developmental problems. It was heart breaking.
    • Hey Acey
Thank you for your recipe! I am going to try this. Right now she eats a holistic grain free canned food as we got a whole bunch of them for free and she likes it. However I want to add some vegan things to her menu and see how she does, possible slowly transition her.
What do you think about adding some mashed vegetables and occasional fruits too? Maybe some ground flax and kelp powder, as my family has that in the house.

      thanks :)
    • Hi Acey, that' fantastic that the kitten is doing so well and doesn't eat store bought cat food. At some point I would test him for HzB or cut the onions out of the recipe and replace it with some other herb.

Causes of Heinz Bodies in Cats

There are many substances that induce HzB formation in cats, with or without the development of anemia including: propofol, acetaminophen, onions (thiosulfates), propylene glycol (carbohydrate food source, preservative), benzocaine products, phenols, methylene blue (urinary antiseptic, IV contrast dye), d-L methionine, vitamin K3 (>2.5 mg/lb/day), phenazopyridine (urinary analgesic), naphthalene, zinc, and copper.5,10,11 These compounds, or their metabolites, all directly or indirectly result in the formation of reactive oxygen species that cause oxidative damage. Increased HzB are also seen with systemic diseases in cats including, hepatic lipidosis, diabetes mellitus with or without ketoacidosis, hyperthyroidism, and malignant lymphoma. Propofol, consumption of onions (thiosulfates), acetaminophen, and propylene glycol will be discussed further
