Thought y'all would be interested to know: certain stalls in Chinatown are now selling Malaysian musang king variety durian (as opposed to Thai monthong that has only been available until now, to my knowledge). It's pricey, for sure, at $8/lb, but it is great quality (tho I've only had one) and is much closer to what you get in its local countries. They're noticeably smaller than monthongs. Mine was around 4 lbs. and it cost $30. I got mine at the Bowery & Grand stall, but the worker told me that other stands in the area are also carrying it possibly cheaper (while discrediting their abilities keep it properly frozen)

Can anyone tell me the wholesaler/distributor of this Malaysian musang king variety, and their contact info? I want to get some distributed to LA.
Oh, wow. In Chinatown? Which stalls do you like?
Maybe I'm biased, from visiting Malaysia, and falling in love with their durian!
which streets are those vendors located???
thanksss
any hint on manhattan's china town?
Can't help you there :(
I find the flushing Chinatown to be cheaper than manhattan. Durian is usually under $1.5/lb, sometimes as low as $1.19/lb.
i dont really see a difference to the one that i bought a few days ago and i paid only $1.80/lb and it came up to about $9 also in chinatown somewhere around grand street
The Thai monthongs were $2.50/lb at this stall. This vendor is typically a bit pricier, with many of their fruits, because it's popular and they're selective on the quality they stock.
The difference between Thai and Malay durian is, one, that there are different varieties. Also, Malaysian farmers let their durian ripen on the trees, and fall on their own. Thai farmers cut their durian at the stalk. So Malaysian durian tends to have deeper flavors and a creamier texture. It seems to be more of a passion in Malaysia and more of an industry in Thailand, from my experience. All that said, I still love Thai durian as well.
