Can I lose weight just by going vegan?

I wanted to know if I can lose weight by going vegan, not raw till 4? I'm just starting out and I'm the only vegan in my house. I find that I make too much food for dinner and end up eating the leftovers for lunch the next day. Will I still lose weight? I am also doing 1-2 hours of exercise a week.

  • Not if you're going to center your diet around processed vegan food. Replacing your butter with Earth Balance and cheese with processed soy cheese isn't optimal, to say the least. Same with most snacks, frozen foods, etc.

Consuming whole foods - fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts, seeds - wins anytime over something in a box or can. Even if packaged food is low in fat, you still have to pay attention to what's in it. I've also come to think of packaged foods as twice-dead, as it's first processed and then reheated. What could it possibly have left to offer you?

Not that you have to go 100% raw - I don't believe in forcing yourself into that either. Or even to feel guilty for eating a little vegan junkfood on occasion -- you're human. But if you want to be healthy and happy, it's good to center your diet around it as much as you can. Make it a goal. It also helps to have some inspiration - be it for improving yourself, the planet, or the lives of animals.

  • Depends, are you going to eat fried potatoes, vegan pizza, vegan macncheeze, vegan yogurts, chocolate cake and cookies???

Or are you going to follow an equally delicious but low fat and healthy, high fiber, vegan diet as outlined in The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, or McDougall's or Neal Barnard's books, all easily obtained at the library?

Read this book it will save your life. Whole T Colin Campbell PhD

  • Abso-freak'n-lutely. It has much more to do with how much fat you are eating. Animal products are high in fat. This is one major reason why they make you fat. Whole plant foods are very low in fat.

For best results I would recommend trying to eat as many whole foods as possible. I.e fruits and vegetables, potatoes, rice, corn, beans, grains.

Have fun. Make it an adventure. Find those foods you love and be happy.

    Peace,

    Brian
