  • Hi ...... hey I am flying into Gold Coast next week on the 4th ...... got 24 hours to kill before I fly North to Cairns ..... looking to catch up with fruity crew on the Gold Coast ...... maybe sleep on your couch one night ?????? OK let me know what you are doing ????? Otherwise I will be chilling in the airport ..... fruit donations welcome

  • Thanks Glenn, yes it seems a blender is key I'll have to get one. Preparation is also key on this program. How do you feel about dehydrated fruit? Has this program helped your climbing?

I live in the city of Mount Shasta in Northern California. There is a ton of rock up here mostly undeveloped. I have been developing routes out here since 2002, mostly back country trad lines on granite at Castle Crags Wilderness. Lately I have been sport climbing and developing routes at a new limestone area, it's easier to find partners to sport climb. I have been climbing for 23 years and was pretty satisfied climbing 5.11trad, 5.12sport, but since I started developing routes regularly my desire to do harder lines has increased. I am 47 years and have been health conscious half my life so I already know the edge i've had over the younger climbers just being a mostly raw vegan, so i'm psyched to keep the fire burning and take things to the next level.

    thanks for your input.

  • Hi Glenn, sitting here at my computer because my partner bailed on me, so it will have to be a bouldering day in the front-range. Anyway I was planning on the climbing in the  backcountry today and was packing my backpack and realized wow! I've got about 2kg of fruit(bananas, peaches, dates, celery, grapes, small bag of sprouted pumpkin seeds w/seaweed, and 1 raw bar 16g fat(for emergencies only)) add water. That's a lot of weight, more than my rack.

Ever deal with this issue? any suggestions?

  • Frog Buttress, hey?! Hm.... is it sport or trad? Crack climbing scares me a bit! lol! I like overhanging crimpy stuff! ;)

I get my dates from a wholesaler. Come to Brissy and i can hook you up with the lady who sells the 5kg box of organic dates for $80. It's a good deal compared to woolworth and cole's NON-organic prices!!!
  • You don't climb at KP!? It's like.... WORLD CLASS!? ;)

    ...just kidding.

Anyways, I haven't been climbing as much as i'd like.... in the U.S. i climb 4-5 times a week OUTSIDE. But I don't have a consistent partner out there so it makes it difficult... and also no car. But I've been to Slider and a few other areas in the Glassys, Coolum, Tooheys, Redbank Plains... I have also been to the Blue Mtns which i am in love with. I recently got back from Thailand, where I spent 3 weeks climbing in Tonsai on limestone stallactites! Now my psyche for climbing has returned! =)

Hey, it'd be AWESOME if you could give me the contact info for your friend. I desperately need a partner to go with, as its my last break in Australia where I can travel before returning to the U.S.

I get my dates either from the wholesaler in Brissy or from this woman who has her own organic business (who gets them from the wholesaler). They are 1000 times  better than even the soft ones in coles.

Hope this helps. We should meet up sometime!

  • Hey Glenn! You are the climber who lives in the gold coast, yeah?! We should meet up sometime! I live in Brissy. Hey, what are you doing in late April? Wanna go to the Grampians!? =) I'm looking for someone to go with.

Anyways.... to answer your question, I eat high calories foods like dates. I know you said you don't feel good after them, but are you getting them fresh!? I buy certified organic dates by the box and they are super moist and soft...completely different from the dates at coles or woolworths! I usually blend about 20-25 dates with water to form "Dateorade" which packs in 1300-1600 calories in one nice meal. Actually, my fav is to add a little chocolate-mint (a variety of mint) in there which literally makes it taste like a mint chocolate chip icecream frappuccino or something! So again, i eat mainly dates when im climbing / refueling but they are almost always blended to pack in the punch.

Same with bananas. Actually, i have eaten so many bananas over the years that I can't eat one plain. I have to blend it. Sad, i know. I could eat the locally grown ones sometimes here but for the most part i don't like them. But sometimes i make a HUGE smoothie with them when i'm back from climbing.

So I usually make that dateorade in the morning before i go... sometimes i even bring some in a waterbottle with me as well. Then i always pack a few dates just in case i get hungry and/or other dried fruit or seasonal fruit (if its likely to get mushed, i put it in a hard container - sometimes i put bananas in a container to bring).

I reckon the most important thing is to get your carbs in. Eat at least 10grams of carbs per kg of bodyweight. =) So if you're still transitioning, carbs like sweet potatoes or rice will be a better choice than high fat foods or fried foods.

    Where do you usually climb?

  • Hey Glenn, yes it is rare to run into someone else in this field. Did you leave due to a lack of work or just a realisation that it wasn't for you? I love it! Although I do work for a small company where I'm the only employee and can basically do what ever I want (as long as I get the required work done) so I think that makes it more enjoyable. It's also no stress which is rare.
Go straight to 811 and save yourself the pain of trying other paths that lead only cravings. I've tried years ago but 811 makes raw so easy.
    Cheers,
    Stephen
